ICT Roadshow opens in Dominica

The Caribbean ICT Roadshow has reached Dominica, its 12th destination.

The two-day initiative, which culminates on Wednesday, is a collaborative venture of the Government of Dominica and Caribbean Telecommunications Union (CTU). It is designed to foster a spirit of innovation in the development of ICT-based practical solutions, raise awareness and encourage harmonization of efforts in the adoption of ICT solutions for inclusive economic and social development in the region.

Running under the theme ‘Harnessing the Power of Innovation – the engine for ICT- enabled development’, the Roadshow was introduced on the 20th anniversary of the CTU in 2009 and takes the form of a series of visits around the region.

“This edition was crafted to suit Dominica. It looks to foster radical changes in lifestyles,” said Bernadette Lewis, secretary general of the Caribbean Telecommunications Union.

The show was officially opened last evening at the Fort Young Hotel.

Minster of Information, Telecommunications and Constituency Empowerment, Ambrose Geroge welcomed the CTU and said Dominica is honored to host this segment of the initiative. He spoke of the island’s continued advancements in the field and its plans to build on this.

Meanwhile, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information and Constituency Empowerment, Davis Letang, said the ICT spotlight is on Dominica and its achievements in the sector.

He urged that all businesses take advantage of the two-day initiative which will not just showcase the achievements of ICT but also look to foster continued development in the sector, allowing for greater access and employment of technology across the island.

Parliamentary Secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister Kelvar Darroux, who is responsible for information technology, spoke of the challenges, initiatives and implications for developing the “information society in Dominica”.

The show ends in a regional ICT Symposium on 14 – 16 November 2010.
