The Dominica Association of Foreign Language Teachers has celebrated French Day for the past 24 years. This year being no exception, French Day is carded for today, Friday 18th March 2011. The day is meant to showcase the knowledge, talent and creativity of fourth form French students and their teachers, in the use of the French language as a living and vibrant tool.
Under the leadership of Miss Magalie Celestine and with contributions from Alliance Française de la Dominique, the National Francophone Commission and other local entities, the events marking this day will be open to the general public.
Under the theme “Le Français pour tous” students, teachers and Francophiles gathered at the Peebles Park this morning displaying various traditional wear from the Francophone world and t-shirts brandishing placards. They proceeded down to the Bay Front, turned right unto King George the V Street, left onto Bath Road then left onto Kennedy avenue. The March ended at the Arawak House of Culture.
The day continues with displays of fables by Jean la Fontaine, sketches and other activities in French.
Students will also be awarded for excellence in French per school and past presidents of the association will be honored. The stage will be graced with performances by Ophelia Marie “La Grande Dame de la Chanson”, Michele Henderson-Delsol “renowned artist” and Elisha Benoit.
Members of the public will be charged EC$5.00 to view this showcase of French in action.
First things first.Congratulations for staging such an event.
I personally as a multilingual D/can in the diaspora,i throw my supportbehind such an event.Life becomes abundant being multilingual. However,I am of the opinion that before one makes an attempt to at a foreign language he/she ought to master the fundamentals of his /her native language. As a fortunate D/can it hurts listening to some of our newscasters harming something as pleasant as the english language. Our ministers of Gov’t and other officials are frequently the culprits also. One just has to listen to the house, the leaderof the opposition the P.M ,the Breast Minister are classic examples. I strongly suggest the same must be done for English and French Creole.
thanks jean claude, i actually learnt from your translation. i was matching the french with the English and benefitted from this.
please ppl, you can atleast give a translation for those of us who do not have a french background. i love the language, love to hear it spoken (so sexy), but i do not understand much of it.
congratulations to all who promote the teaching and learning of french on this island.
