Dominica among the top 20 best trips for 2011 – National Geographic

Photograph by Justin Foulkes, The Travel Library/Photolibrary

National Geographic has named Dominica among the top 20 best trips of 2011.

According to the publication, Dominica and the other 19 places were “hand-picked” by National Geographic Traveler editors as the best of 2011.

“A lack of white sandy beaches and an overabundance of rainfall keep this mountainous island of tropical rain forests off typical Caribbean vacation itineraries—a plus for adventure seekers,” the publication states.

Soon we will no longer be known as the nature isles of the carribbean or the top ten ethical country in the world. At least we are getting some recognition. i hope the disaster to the eniviroment won’t turn tourist away.we only think about our pockets. The politicians only think about themselves they dont really care about me or you. We are the ones who have to live there. At least Marigot is one of the most beautiful village in Dominica A few more development and we will be fine. We need to stand up for our country and we cant go to china and do what we want They only hire there own. take a good look around do u see much black working in there businesses

I believe that Dominica is quite unique in its natural state and we should not be ashamed because of white beaches that are lacking. Since it is the only Caribbean island that made it to the top 20’s according to National Geographic, we should be quite proud. I believe in development but that, too, comes with a price. Like some one commented, the cutting down of trees help ruin the island and we are all aware of the greenery that Dominica has to offer. Somone also mentioned the cutting of trees cause us to lose our rivers and that is quite true. We should realize that due to its state that’s why it made it to the top 20’s. Change is good but too much of one thing is good for nothing.

    Excellent!!
what we need to do urgently and deligently as a people living in dominica is to clean up the place. That takes little effort if we all chip in – from President down to pre-schoolers. Let’s keep our rivers, beaches, valleys, yards, homes, forest – all of it clean. Trust me – nothing better than a clean environment in this time. Then lets develop in a manner that keeps the environment clean and not rob future generations of the ability to enjoy the beauty that we now enjoy.

    give thanks

Someone said, ” look at Hawaii”?? Dominica and Hawaii are like cousins. But, the road network in Hawaii could easily make it into the top 10 engineering wonders of the World. The US has invested billions into roads and bridges on the islands. We’re talking about impressive overpasses that span valley floors, miles of tunnels that shoot through hills and mountains and surface roads that weave itself like a tapestry over the island. So, don’t look at Hawaii and wonder why can’t tourist come to Dominica like they do in Hawaii? I have heard some “people” mention that all the road projects going on or proposed for Dominica is not taking the island anywhere. Well, “look at Hawaii” and think again. Political vitriol is what’s not taking Dominica anywhere.

    Sincerely
    KoKo Naughts

well give it a few years and we will not be in it, what with the oil refinarey and the chinese, and the dumping of eath in the ocean and the cutting of trees, other nations are helping ruin our island, i would like to keep it natural and let people come for nature, not have a country where a goverment is making money for other countries, i am very scared of the future the way the place is going at the moment,,, i feel the nature island is dying…

At least there are some of us who are grateful and can thank the Father for the blessings he has bestowed upon this “Nature Isle of the World” as one comentator has said. Let us stop being negative and instigating hatred in our land and learn to be thankful and appreciative of what we have that the outside world does not have and be a loving and peaceful people.

I read the article by National Geographic and I must admit that Dominica received high praises for its natural beauty. The article also states that lack of white sandy beaches and an abundance of rainfall keep this mountainous island off typical Caribbean intineries. This statement should be of concern to the ministry of tourism. As some of us are aware of, the majority of tourists come to the Caribbean to frolic in the sun and sandy beaches. To compensate for the lack of what the other islands have, more needs to be done, for example, undertaking a major advertisement campaign to give Dominica exposure to the outside world. Dominica has to be known by the so caled adventure seekers in order for these adventure seekers to come to seek what we have to offer. It is great that Dominica is unique as an island of natural beauty but a lot has to be done to rip the benefits of this beauty. There are those who say that Domnica needs to be left the way it is. I do not think such statements do justice to the Dominican people who would like to see Dominica progress and be competitive in the Caribbean and the outside world. I believe that the people of Dominica should be able to balance nature and development together; roads need to be built to these so called destiation which are mostly in he interior of the island; in doing so, vegetation as to be removed and land has to be cleared. It is about time that the peple who are quick to engage in the nature and going green jargon must realize that for Dominica t promote itself as an ecotourist destination more needs to be done. To further emphasize on the road situation, there are tourists who would love to see all the scenic beauty but who would not and cannot engage themselves in the walk to get there; hence a more convenient way to get there. If an entrepreneur decides to build a modern type hotel in the interior of the island, there would be resistance to it. We as a people should not keep back Dominica’s development in the name of nature because in the end there will be some who will complain that Dominica is stagnant There are many of us who love our natural beauty but would also like to see a balancing act between nature and development.

RE YOUR LAST SENTENCE: IN A BALANCE BETWEEN NATURE AND DEVELOPMENT, NATURE ALWAYS LOSES!!!

DOMINICA IS LOVE FOR WHAT DOMINICA IS, NOT WHAT DOMINICA WILL BECOME.

WE HAVE A NASTY HABBIT OF ERASING NATURE FOR HUMAN CONVENIENCE.

      January 17, 2011

“Analyst” – You should realize that the reason for its allure, and inclusion on such a list, is because of how it is now. It is not for its potential or its pomise. It is for its present condition. Maybe you find that it rains too much too. Like a previous comment said, whenever there is an effort for balance between nature and development, nature always loses. Appreciate the island for what it is. Let us not try to be like Barbados or Trinidad or Jamaica – let us remain Dominica.
How many ads do you see for the Galapagos islands? Very few. The people who are attracted to that environment will find it. So too will they find Dominica. Trust me, the National Geographic article will gain much more publicity for the island, than anything else that the government may do.

St.Lucia is the perfect example of what Dominica could have been long time ago..Booooming and developing. but look at what all that boom do to lil lucia. Mass crimes and deforestation. they loosing alal their rivers. St.Lucia have a litttttttle bit of white sand.Doh make them ads fool u all..They have a lil bit not much so when the forest gone and rivers dry up nun much to sho. Development can lead to destruction too. we need a balance. but with any amount of development nature realy lose out.

It seems everyone on the outside can see and appreciate our true potential and what we have that God has blessed us with, to work and prosper with, except us. I guess the saying “familiarity breeds contempt” seem to be true for us

Now that’s good news. what we need to do is agressive marketing. we can look at what the other countries are doing wrong & see what we need to do & take it from there. I also agree that there should be a balance between mordern development & leaving mother nature at her best in D/A. Every other island has white sand beaches & we look at our black sand beaches as a set back, but the irony about it is that most people have never seen black sand beaches, so that is unique to us. let us market it.
if we look at hawahi, they black sand beaches & active volcanoes & including eruptions but that still doesn’t keep the tourist away.So we ned to examine ourselves & start doing what needs to be done.

BETTER AIR EXCESS INTO THE COUNTRY PLEASE, PLEASE,PLEASE,PLEASE.
