In an effort to improve the marketability of the Carib Territory, a major component of Dominica’s tourism product, Discover Dominica Authority in collaboration with the Kalinago community have upgraded and expanded a Kalinago website (www.kalinagoterritory.com), produced a brochure which includes all the sites and attractions of the Territory as well as its history/culture and developed a Kalinago Home Stay Programme.

The host homes will be private, owner occupied residencies which will provide simple accommodation for a modest fee to be arranged by the Coordinator of the programme, the Manager of the Kalinago Barana Autê. Hosts will be residents of the Kalinago Territory who enjoy meeting people and are willing and prepared to share their culture with others. The home-stay programme is designed to provide visitors with an opportunity to experience the rich and unique heritage of Dominica’s first settlers, the Kalinago People while at the same time, provide greater opportunities for the residents of the community to benefit from the tourism sector.

The Discover Dominica Authority in collaboration with the Kalinago Barana Autê of the Ministry of Tourism and Legal Affairs will launch the promotional material and the home stay programme on Friday, November 25, 2011 from 2:30pm at the Kalinago Barana Aute, Salybia.

To mark the occasion the Kalinago Chief, the Kalinago Council, Parliamentary Representative for the constituency, the Local Government Department, Kalinago home-stay providers and other Kalinago stakeholders will be present at the event. The brochure and website will be showcased and the Karina Cultural Group will celebrate the event with a performance.

I see Henry in this picture. Carib Calinnago call them what you want. This man is the best hard working carpenter boat builder and good father to his children in Dominica I know. And can make you laugh till you cry at a party. Yes he is humble, and I adore him and his family. A name does not market a people. Foreiners come to enjoy the culture, and it is alive and well in cirib territory not in Roseau. You can’t imagine the number of people who visit Dominica and never get further than Roseau or Portsmouth and are disgusted with the people hounding them for money and the smell. They will ask you to buy a round in Salybia but it smells of homemade bread and fish frying much better no? Trust me.

Some of you people make me sick. Don’t you know that there are black kalinagoes as well as the light skinned ones like myself? Educate yourselves, stop the ignorance, silly little negro (since I am certain you are not white or kalinago)

Nowadays everydody wants to be politically correct but there is a time and place for that. Although it may seem like a step back they should strongly consider reverting to the word/name “Carib” instead of Kalinago.

Tourists want to pay and see the Caribs and their culture, i.e. the original pre-Columbian peoples, not a generic undescribable Kalingo. So if they want to promote something unique about Dominica and the Caribbean they should return to Carib(s). That my friends, is what marketing is all about.

the word carib refers to the caribbean as a whole, the kalinago’s are an indian people on the island of dominica, which is unique of dominica,we are not marketing the caribbean,in a nut shell kalinago is original, that is what we rolling with.

You mentioned that tourists want to see us in pre-Columbian times and we should go back to the name Carib. Read your island’s history. Before Columbus came, we were not known as Caribs. I was COLUMBUS who coined that name just as he called the island Dominica. We were called Karifuna/Kalinago and we called our island, Waitukubuli! Know the facts, honey.

@Road pig,the name carib was given to them by columbus which was derived from the word canibal which he believed them to be because of bones he saw in their houses.Let people call themselves what ever they like to, I don’t see how that messes with your day to day life…..
