Four people are dead and 67 injured, after a train derailed on a curved section of track in the Bronx, New York, on Sunday morning.
According to reports, seven cars of the Metro-North train came off the tracks coming to rest just inches from the water.
New York governor, Andrew Cuomo, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the deaths at a news conference at the site of the crash earlier this morning.
He said at the time that authorities believed that everyone at the site has been accounted for.
Eleven people are believed to have been seriously injured and the train operator was among the injured, authorities said.
A Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) spokesperson said the big curve where the derailment occurred is in a slow speed area and the black box should be able to tell how fast the train was traveling.
The MTA said none of the cars entered the Hudson or Harlem rivers, which are adjacent.
The train appeared to be going “a lot faster” than usual as it approached the curve coming into the station, passenger Frank Tatulli told WABC-TV.
sincere condolences
My heart bleeds for these passengers and their families. This is just tragic and speed has to be looked at as a factor. That’s a sharp bend, and I don’t believe the Conductor for one second about brakes giving way. The passengers are all saying that from Tarrytown the train picked up excessive speed, which is what they do when they feel they’re running behind. Metro-North is a delightful and comfortable ride. I commute on that train daily and lately the mishaps have been piling up. The authorities need to revisit the rails and possibly retrain their conductors. This is too frequent right now, and it’s always the same excuse. I shudder to imagine what carnage this could have been if it were a weekday morning, possibly myself included.
Hmmm. Girl falfwete take me when I saw that as breaking news on CBS. My eyes welled up one time I say My woman gone! Real talk I had to pause for a second to reflect its sunday. You have no idea TSB!!!
Sad news….how our death could be so much as a blink of an eye…going on our daily routine, one blink and we’re could be gone…Those of us who are able to see another day should say THANK YOU LORD…
THANK YOU LORD….
Life is such we know not when accidents will occur and why they should occur. I feel saddened for the injured, those who lost their lives and the families who are grieving their loss. I hope in time the injured will fully recuperate.
New York authorities are obviously extremely saddened at this. Their investigation will determine if the train was traveling faster than the regular speed for that area.
May the souls of the departed rest in peace. Amen! Lord have mercy!
Our prayers goes out to those families and love ones of this likely accident. Thanks D.N.O. on top of the news and bringing to us, we appreciate that.
Sad momment for the familes who lost their loved ones and others who got hurt in this tragic accident.
