The sponsorship search for one queen contestant is finally over, thanks to a six-month old company which has stepped up to the plate.
D-Treads, a young company which specializes in retreading used tires, opened its doors on July 8, 2013 at its location in Canefeild.
On Saturday, during the official village launch for Francine Tiffany Baron of Grand Bay, the company announced that it was sponsoring the Miss Dominica hopeful and pinned her sash.
“We are proud to officially sash and to present to you jen Gwan Bay, your own to you,” a representative of D-Treads said.
Meanwhile, Parliamentary Representative for Grand Bay Justina Charles, called on the public to support the queen contestants, and refrain from criticizing them.
“Let me commend the contestants for really taking that bold step, to come out and to represent the various communities in this year’s activity,” she stated. Charles added, “Very often some of us sit and criticize, the young ladies that have come forth but it is not as easy as it looks. And we have to begin to put our little money on a side, so that we can buy our tickets, and we can pay our bus, and as your parliamentary representative, I will play a part in ensuring that the young people are in Roseau on that night.”
Sensay and lapeau kabwit were prominent as a large crowd of villagers turned out and followed the motorcade along the village route in real celebration.
The community of Pointe Mitchel, which is represented in the Miss Dominica pageant by Jewele Bianca Brown, also turned out in impressive numbers on Saturday, to participate in the launch of their contestant.
“Nou ke selebwe Jewel” (We will celebrate Jewele) chanted the colorfully clad children of St. Luke’s Primary, all bedecked in straw hats, as they personalized the lyrics of various creole songs in tribute to Jewele Brown.
Expressing similar sentiments was The Pointe Mitchel Cultural Dance Group who performed a bele piece and declared in a creole song: “Leh Jewele ganyen nou kay haylay hooray” (When Jewel we will shout hooray).
Pointe Mitchel Village council representative, Denise Charles, in a brief address, said Pte. Michel was proud to have Miss Brown as its representative and called on all to show their support. “We are a hundred and fifty percent behind Miss Jewele Brown,” she stressed.
Events Director of the Dominica Festivals Committee, Nathalie Clarke called on all residents to support not just their representatives in the queen show but the whole of carnival. “We really want everyone to support the product, not just the carnival queen show, but the whole calendar of events which is now on a roll.”
