Behanzin, Sean Douglas, condemn renaming of airport

As elaborate plans fall into place for the renaming of Melville Hall airport today, two members of the Douglas family are condemning the Roosevelt Skerrit administration’s decision to rename it the Douglas- Charles airport after the late prime ministers, Rosie Douglas and Pierre Charles.

Tiyani Behanzin, son of Rosie Douglas and Sean Douglas, the late prime minister’s nephew, in a statement issued to the media, describe the government’s plan as “a cynical ploy by this regime to sideline these two great leaders to a mere footnote in the annals of Dominican history.”

“This elaborate renaming ceremony on Monday, October 27th is part of this regime’s re-election strategy to win back disaffected Labourites and undecided voters, who feel that the Skerrit government has abandoned the ideals, principles and essential core labour values of not just Rosie Douglas and Pierre Charles, but also Edward Oliver Leblanc and Mike Douglas,” Behanzin and Sean Douglas contend.

They say that despite the government’s investment of over $130 million at Melville Hall, the airport has no future as Rosie Douglas himself recognized 5 years ago.

“On his last visit to the United States as Prime Minister in September, 2000, he started discussions with the Chinese Government through their embassy there on the establishment of diplomatic relations,” the duo points out. “More than fourteen (14) years ago, the Chinese agreed to fund the construction of an international airport worth US$300 million in Dominica with work to commence in March of 2001. The contents of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) which Rosie Douglas signed with the Chinese was scheduled to be announced by him in his National Day Address on November 3rd,”

They go on to list several reasons for their objection to the decision, citing a departure by Roosevelt Skerrit from the late Douglas’s vision for Dominica’s economic development to include the construction of an international airport, the compromising of Dominica’s maritime delimitation with Venezuela with respect to Bird Rock (Bird Island), the “distancing” of Skerrit from the internationalist political values which Douglas and Charles espoused and what they refer to as “a deliberate strategy to destroy the development of a democratic Labour Party” into “a small clique closely aligned to the leader, steeped in self-serving behaviour and posturing as advocates of the new dispensation.”

The duo also raises issues such as the lack of campaign finance reform which they say Rosie Douglas advocated and what they describe as the “Freedomization” of the DLP over the last several years and the “systematic weeding out of stalwarts associated with Rosie and Pierre and the calculated strategy to destroy the Pierre Charles political machinery in Grand Bay.”

According to Sean Douglas and Behanzin, when Roosevelt Skerrit became Dominica’s prime minister after the death of Pierre Charles on January 6th 2004, there was promise and hope of a bright new dawn for Dominica. They claim that after ten years, his leadership has become “mired in a quicksand of bad governance, lack of transparency, a complete lack of integrity and a deteriorating economy.”

“This hastily concocted airport renaming on the eve of a general election has little to do with honouring these two great Dominican statesmen. It is about Roosevelt Skerrit attempting to use the huge reservoir of goodwill that Rosie Douglas and Pierre Charles still enjoy to win another term in office.  It represents hypocritical posturing of the worst kind,” the statement by the two Douglas family members concludes.

Below is the full statement from Tiyani Behanzin and Sean Douglas.

Hello and good evening my people. Well those two men complain about every thing rather than using their education to open businesses in the north of the country to compete with the Astaphans. Why don’t they used their family wealth and name recognition to open a major supermarket in the north so people don’t have to go to town so often to shop rather they seat on the sideline and complain. I was just in Dominica and I saw Astaphan trucks making deliveries in every corner of the country so why can’t the Douglas do the same. I have a lot of respect for their family But one get tired of listening to complains.

In a democracy everyone is allowed to express their own opinions and express their own views, family or not and we should respect that. There is no obligation to agree with someone just because they are next of kin.

Please choose one…Roosevelt Douglas or Pierre Charles. Who is Douglas Charles or Charles Douglas? Come on. I am confused///Dominica really? Depressing, Distasteful. Was there research done, a poll, a vote. the consensus of the general populace? Please change the name back to Melville Hall, it sounded really good. Keep speaking T and S. I see your point.

There is a highway in Trinidad & Tobago called The Churchill-Roosevelt Highway, named after a former President of the USA and a former Prime Minister of the UK. So maybe the name Douglas-Charles (with a hyphen between the names) is what was intended.

    • A Doubting Thomas
      October 28, 2014

Only you are confused. The names are not confusing to most Dominicans. The Douglas-Charles Airport is not the first airport in the world to be named after two individuals.

      October 29, 2014

What is surprising here is the lack of consciousness, historical value and pride. Melville hall was the name of a British colonizer who owned the land that has not legitimate representation for our country now and in the future. Would you like to name your child after a man who raped you? and continue calling that child such? Of course not… so whats the problem?

Because this is not the labour party. This the SELF party who hijack the principles of Rosie and Pierre Charles for their own use. They are corrupting the democratic principle of one man one vote by making people depending on their largesse to buy their votes. This is abuse of the proletariat who are kept in the dark and now and then are fed some manure to keep them alive so they can vote but in reality the leadership despises them.

      October 29, 2014

It was his right to change his name. Anybody who does not want to carry the slave master’s name has a right to change his or her name. Do you know that Behanzin was the most powerful ruler in West Africa during the end of the 19th century? He was determined to prevent European intervention into his country. The people of Dahomey often referred to their monarch as the “King Shark,” a surname which symbolised strength and wisdom. He was a fond lover of the Humanities and is credited with the creation of some of the finest song and poetry ever produced in Dahomey.
Names have meanings and most of us do not know the meanings of our names especially if we were named by the priests.
Just because Tiyani took a different name does not mean that he disrespectd the family. That means he knows who he is and he was quite conscious of what he did. He knows that his ancestors were Africans and that he is an African.

It is time we let people in authority know that we love Dominica and will not stand by while they bring our country in the mud. I often wonder if is stupid we Dominicans stupid so, or whether we are just a bunch of educated fools. There is a part of the crucifixion narrative in the Bible which speaks to Jesus being bereted with a crown of thorns and hailed “King of the Jews”. And probably right there in the crowd were some Jews who opined, “Rome is bestowing the nation’s highest honour on a Jew. This is great. Let’s celebrate.” But the majority of onlookers knew this was to be a posthumous and humiliating crowning. It was also meant to rally support for the Roman Governor because the coronation ceremony appeased some irate Jews who were petitioning Rome for his replacement.

Can we draw some similarities with the Douglas-Charles “crowning?” Of course! Many! Skerrit has moved miles away from the ideals espoused by Douglas-Charles. And with general elections around the next corner, and with so many Douglas-Charles supporters and acolytes openly expressing dissatisfaction with Skerro and his cabal, a little “crowning” act may bring the faithful back to the folds. This gimmick has nothing to do with honouring Douglas-Charles; it has all to do with trying to stay the slippery slide the DLP is undergoing. Have you been to Rosie’s or Pierro’s grave recently? Do their graves tell a story of greatness? Awah! The truth is, Skerro doe care an Asstronaut about Douglas-Charles, except where they can bring him some votes.

But I hold to the belief that whenever elections are called, if the voting is clean,, DLP will go under.

  19. Proud Dominican

I supported labor for 30 yrs and campaigned for Skerrit earlier this year. But how long can I continue to do this to my country for love of party? These two heros and stalwarts of the DPL have been gone for over 10 yrs now and hardly would Skerrit address the nation on their memorial just to remind us of their vision for DA. Why now at the last moment? In 2009, the election was not close so he did not even call their names during his independent speech. Today because you in trouble you trying to resurrect them? Sorry, this has drawn me away from you because any fool can see it

As far as i can remember all the Labour Party talked about for years after Rosie’s death was his vision for Dominica. So are you all saying they cannot move on from that? The government is not perfect, but i have heard of nothing better to replace it.

Sean made a very interesting disclosure which should be concerning to Dominicans. Where as Skeritt’s supporters, in particular, the host of the Animal Show, which, has been portraying Mr. Linton as a bully and even suggested he had done to the United States to receive treatment for anger management, heard Sean disclosed that Skeritt’s anger at Cabinet meetings has been very disturbing. He explained, on one occasion, as a result of a press report he made which was not to the satisfaction of Skeritt, he was humiliated in the worse way, in the presence of other Ministers of Government. This isn’t the first time I have heard of Skeritt’s conduct during cabinet meetings. We have heard of the alleged throwing of a chair at a Minister of Government, during a heated argument, so, Mr. Linton might be considered an angel when you compare both leaders.

That ceremony they are going to have is a waste of taxpayers money. All of that for what?
First of all that name is a confusion by itself.
Second you name something after someone who has some involvement.
The former pms have things name after them in their respective constituents already so no need for that.

    October 27, 2014

As a laborite my heart is broken by this recent anoucement of the dlp. After all, why is Skerrit doing this? What’s his motive? I mean we all in the party know Skerrit was not a friend of either late PM’s and to do this is just exposing his hypocrisy as many of us have moved on. Rosie has been gone for almost 14 yrs and Piero 10 yrs . During their yearly memorial I cannot remember Skerrit even mentioning their names let alone to remind us of their accomplishments as laborites. So to me for him and the DLP to rename the airport after them especially at a time when we are celebrating Creole In the Park, along with the cost involved, is nothing short of a kick in our face as both late PM’s would NEVER have done this to our nation. It is just politics and Skerrit should not use the good names of our fallen leaders for political gain. But that too will fail even if thousands take the free ride to go sewo and eat. Commonsense will prevail and we will speak for Rosie and Piero whenever he calls it.

My opinion the airport should be named after Pierre Charles. He was the most instrumental in getting Dominica out of the recession in 2001-2004. And another major monument should be named after Roosie. To have these two great men share something I find is a bit dis respectful. If a foreigner hears Douglas Charles Airport he would think its named after one guy named Douglas Charles. Give these 2 great leaders more respect than that.

      October 30, 2014

I think you are mad, usually people who are mentality ill go off the rock, and make silly, and irrelevant comments, some of which are nothing more than an outrageous lie as you told here. Where are you from guy, what kind of recession did Charles take Dominica out of?

Dominica has been in a from of recession from the day UWP lost the election by failing to get the majority of the votes, hence Athie Marten fourge a partnership with the bunnch of about 32 money hunger politicians, and they formed the coalition government.

Let me tell you the recession you claim Charles pull Dominica out of is imaginary recession; you do not know the meaning of the word recession, so just stop your crap.

I will agree with you Charles started a recession in the country, the day he ordered the Trinidad, contractors, and engineers who were in Dominica, to build the International Airport out of the country. If that is what you intended to say, say it loud, say it Clair, but you need to stop your lies!

If the International Airport was built yours, and Charles recession would not have lasted twenty years because many people in the country would be employed permanently directly, or indirectly by the International Airport making a living.

To crown it all, Skerrit squandered the money given by the Peoples Republic of China, and Taiwan not forgetting Trinidad, and when the time came to start paying the money back to the government of Trinidad & Tobago, he started a stinch which was settled in court. People like you are spreading false propaganda, who died and left you king over Dominica?

I have a long memory, I do not forget anything unless I do not care about what it is; then I use my power to block certain things out of my memory.

Know what the hell you are talking about, before you crow, if there was ever a recession in Dominica, it was caused by Roosevelt Douglas, Athie Martin Pierre Charles, and for the last fifteen years, Roosevelt Skerrit.

      Shut up whoever you are!

I met you in California at a birthday function for my cousin and I told that you should stop calling people names but you still using such terrible language. I guess you haven’t learn.

  27. October 27, 2014

If the airport is being named after these two great pioneers what is the big deal with these two guys who claim to be family? This should be a great day for you so why is it that everything the prime minister of Dominica decides to do he always have an alternate motive? This man is not all bad. All of us have a good and bad side but for the people in opposition, Skerrit only has a bad side. Grow up people this is getting ridiculous now! Time to come together to build Dominica.

      October 30, 2014

When we think in terms of a pioneer, or pioneers, we are talking about the originators,; the first who came into a territory, or place and prepared it for others to follow.

Therefore Edward O Leblanc came before the scum bags of this present Labor Party, and the worthless DLP/DFP the coalition government.

Oliver Leblanc, Wills S. Stevens Let us consider people such a Frank Baron, even Loblack who never made it into the legislative council pioneered the political path in our country, and if I gave credit to Loblack, I need to include Elkin Henry, and Robert B Douglas, Claude Laville, Frobell Laville, and by the way the Lavills were two Carib brothers, Claude served on the legislative council in the colonial days. the father of kid Rosie Douglas deserve some credit also as a pioneer okay, let us give credit where credit is due.

And here is a sucker, that man Thomas, I remember his mother was married to Claude Laville, I remember Thomas when I was a little boy, he has a few years on me maybe eight or ten when he was playing down the street at the beginning of the drive up the hill to Claude’s house in Marigot, that sucker I am sure would not be able to identify me I sod in front of him this day, its been so long.

In any event Charles and Douglas, they are no pioneers, not even Patrick John, they came long after the path was cleared by the true pioneers I mentioned above, even J B Charles, Eugenia Charles farther, and another from Wesley, Decray born to a mother with a name like that of the king, “Telemaque.”

Skerrit and the DLP know they are in trouble, as polls are showing many laborites like myself have jumped from that Skerrit DLP ship to Team Dominica, they trying there best to see if they will get us back. But the truth is, the harder they try the more obvious it is to all right thinking Dominicans that Skerrit is just trying a political game. Why would Skerrit use our independence celebration to go rename an airport where it is alleged that he plans to use over a quarter million dollars on at a time when our economy is so bad. If you go to Martinique and that iron cathedral they have in Fort de France you will see a sign in there dedicated to Behanzin. He was the last king of Dahomey, which I believe is called Benin today. It seems he gave the french colonialists there a lot of mwpi and was banished to Martinique for his troubles. I guess Tyani named himself after that king. But I don’t believe in that. If you are born with a name that your parents give you, you must live with that because if you don’t you make them look small. Anyway, who are you trying to fool, you are still the same person even if you change your name a thousand times you can not run away from your past. I can sympathise with Tyanni but it is no use. He was named after his grandfather RBD for a reason and that can never be erased because that is history.

This waste of time and state money should be condemned. The labor party is using the states resources to campaign and we the tax payers should speak about it. On another note the tribute to the former pm is a testament to the high esteem that these leaders are held in. You are renaming this thing that will be dysfunctional in the near future to the names of heroes??? so what couldn’t this money be used to reopen the only hospital that is close to the airport? this goes to show the focus of the kabal

reading the comments and wow….really dominicans? the country is dead, nothing is happening economically and yet you guys are singing for skerrit, it’s time for something new, liat just stopped all night flights to dominica, so what was the point of the 130mil investment? this was super short term if you asked me, let’s help our country with a long term fix by removing skerrit and his gang please

dumbinican when did LIAT stop all night flights into Dominica??

I left SXM at 8:45 PM Friday Night and got in here on LIAT so when did they stop the night flights Saturday???

Joe I don’t know what LIAT flight you were on from St. Maarten but the last scheduled flight on a friday night by that company is the LI523, scheduled to land at Melville Hall at 5.50 pm. and that is not a direct flight but involves a change in Antigua. I’m not saying you of not telling the truth but I would be very interested to know what LIAT flight you departed on from SXM at 8.45 pm. on a friday to arrive at DOM that same night.

These two sellouts are a disgrace to the legacy of Champion Roosevelt Douglas. The fact that they would associate themselves with a Party who chastised a hero, their own blood is bizarre. These are two disgruntled men who have stooped to the lowest of low to seek revenge. They are only revealing their true colors. Dominicans, please turn out in large numbers to honor these great men.

    Two minor details…………..

  42. October 27, 2014

How dare these two! How dare them!!! As the great, humble and compassionate Prime Minister is about to honor their father and uncle respectively, these two ungrateful, distasteful and despicable men are seeking to cast a dark shadow on what will surely be remembered as one of the greatest events in Dominica’s history.
No doubt, Tiyani and Sean has been infiltrated by operatives of the United Wicked People and brainwashed by their senseless propaganda and ill-will towards the Great King and Master, Dominica’s Alpha and Omega, our Esteemed and Honorable Prime Minister, Dr. Roosevelt Skerrit!
The fact remains that it is with infinite wisdom and compassion that our Great Savior has decided to honor the memories of Hon. Piere Charles and Hon. Rosie Douglas. Dr. Skerrit loved and admired these two men and felt it necessary to give them the honor they deserve as true patriotic and visionary Dominicans!
This unwarranted criticism by two (unimportant) members of the Douglas family will in no way deter the great Leader from doing what is right and honorable. So, Tiyani and Sean, please go back and tell your United Wicked People handlers that it did not work!!!!! The full might and force of the Divine Labor Party will be on display today @ the Charles-Douglas Airport to support our God-King, Dominica’s High Priest, Our Lord and Savior, Dr. Roosevelt Skerrit as he again creates history! Better luck next time BOYS!!!

Where have yoU been and with all the bobol and corruption the only qualification the leaders of the DLP has betrayal, use the poor people, squander states money etc.

Whenever I see people start elevating mortal men to God status its time to leave this space. This is just ridiculous. I remember Skerrit being called Jesus in 2005 also, but what has this Jesus done for the people of Dominica since then? A stadium? Roads? This is really sad.

You make absolutely no sense…If Dominica does not have a claim on Bird Island…Why is Venezuela going to such lengths to have us cede it to them…Go do your research before you talk nonesense…
BIRD ISLAND IS WITHIN DOMINICA’S TERRITORIAL BOUNDARIES…HOWEVER VENEZUELA WANTS TO HAVE A STRATEGIC PRESENCE IN THE CARIBBEAN SEA…WITH BIRD ISLAND THEIR MARITIME BOUNDARIES WILL EXTEND AS FAR NORTH AS DOMINICA.

    Gentleman
I applaud your initiative in posting this most factual comment.

You have encapsulated exactly what is wrong with Skerrit’s regime.

Fellow Dominicans, I beg you to download the entire report to read and digest. These gentlemen have articulated what many of us have been grappling with.

I hope that this report will help you to make the right decision on Election Day. I am not advocating that the Labour Party is unvoteabke or that UWP is vote able, but I am of the belief that the current regime needs to be disposed of.

Skerrit should not be allowed to continue as Prime Minister of Dominica as he has absolutely no redeeming qualities.

I pray and trust that you will make the right decision on Election Day.

    • October 27, 2014

Concur 500 % he should be in prepartation to serve jail time rather than having the cojones to be doing what he is doing. It tells me why am right for what I believe. The problem is more than Skerrit madness the people who support him and his crew are the ones responsible.

Mr. Sean Douglas, & Tiyani Behanzin    , could you explain an MOU signed by Rosie Douglas with the Chinese in 2000 to build an international airport starting in March 2001. This MOU seems to be a document that died with Rosie if it did exist. Did Hon Piere Charles know about it so that he could follow up and have it implemented? Piere Charles spent 4 years as PM after Rosie died (2000-2004), this MOU which was supposedly signed by Rosie with the Chinese was never mentioned is it a phantom MOU? if not have it published so that the vision of Rosie can be updated.   . Gentlemen Rosie and Piero are dead may their souls rest in peace, you continue to speak of the vision of these two men, they are DEAD. What should concern us is the vision of the DLP under the leadership of Roosevelt Skeritt.

    • October 27, 2014

Sean behave yourself, presently you are an unknown entity. Just because you fired yourself from a job demanding more money and a renewal of your contract does not give you to right to try and diminish the PM in any way fit for your liking. Continue selling your ice cream, maybe you could boost up sale by creating/inventing more ice cream flavors for customers.

I see this as just sour grapes on both of you all parts people like us who knew Rosie knows he would have that half cocked smile on his face knowing this will be named after him knowing deep down he wants jump from his seat and say boy you all not easy eh, we all know what he had to say about you that son of his there.
