Two young Dominican mothers who pleaded guilty to stealing groceries at H.H.Whitchurch in Portsmouth have been given the choice of either paying up or being locked up.
According to court information, Tara Joseph aged 23, of Vieille Case and Janillia Moise, 28, of Calibishie, committed the offense on November 24, 2012.
Police prosecutor, Sergeant Constance Cuffy, told the court that Joseph was employed at the institution while Moise is a former employee. He said on November 24, 2012 at about 8:15 pm, Moise left Calibishie for the Whitchurch establishment at Portsmouth and met Joseph who was a cashier there, at about 8:48 pm, just before close down time. He said Joseph left her position and joined Moise who was doing some shopping and she later returned with Moise and placed the items in a bag without receiving money. She only cashed for items totaling $52.00 while a quantity of other items which cost $1,108.70 was not paid for. According to Sergeant Cuffy, at the end of her shift, Joseph joined Moise and Moise’s boyfriend outside where she was then given “a small share of the groceries.”
He said the following day a suspicions store manager who had run a check on Joseph’s register and looked at the store’s security cameras, confronted her with his findings. Joseph initially denied any wrong doing but that changed when she saw the camera footage whereupon she apologized and asked to pay for the items. Police then searched the home of Moise where most of the items were recovered.
In court, both women expressed “shame and remorse” at the incident.
In his mitigating plea for both ladies, lawyer Joshua Francis told the court “They have accepted full responsibilities….it was a miscarriage of indiscretion from them, they are not trouble makers and not wasted the courts time,” He asked the court for “a suspended sentence” stating, “be mercifully lenient on them, they have spent a few days in the cell, have learnt their lesson and is shameful and embarrassed about the matter.”
Before sentencing, magistrate Candia Carette George, strongly admonished the ladies. “You ought to be ashamed of yourselves. You were working and should be honest about it, you have kids and it is going to be hard to get employment. Tell yourselves you made a mistake….a good name and character is better than things,” she told them.
Joseph and Moise were ordered to pay compensation of $554.35 each by November 30, 2012 or spend two months in jail if they fail to pay. They were also each fined a additional $1,500.00 to be paid my February 28, 2013 or in default, go to jail for four months jail.

When you steal do it alone and for yourself. Knowing what is at stake and knowing that there are eyes all over one need to be more careful. No one would do this for you it is really not worth it. It’s a sad situation….a very sad one….but what their village have to do with anything? They went to court, slept in jail….paying for their sins…..hopefully, they will earn a lesson….I when ppl do things, instead we ncourage and pray for them….we cast them own like we so damn perfect,,,,,what. Whilst not condoning the actions of these women, they could have escaped on a TECHNICALITY if only they had done their homework b4 embarking on this dishonest mission.
Whenever you commit a deliberate crime you must provide allowance for being caught. If you don’t then you are acting like a fool and should not be in this business at all.

I was woking in Roseau and there were times I would have nothing to eat, I use to stay hungry for the day untill i go home and eat what my mother cook but I would never take any body thing in their super market.

As it has been from the beginning, those who hear and receive the “Truth” they will either receive Life for the first time, and those who are in Life already will continue into a deeper Life and freedom in Love.
However, death and its captivity will be for those who choose to reject those “Truths” of God Almighty. But be aware that death does not only mean the passing away of the physical body, for there are many people who are sleeping in their graves, but they passed away in Life with Jesus Christ. And so, those people are more alive than the mass number of people who still exist today.

The attitude and conducts which bring shame to it doers and all people around them, are the ways of death—regardless of if those people live in glass houses. Let those who have ears hear what the Spirit is saying.

I feel bad for those girls. This is so amateurish!! It is one of the most common cases of supermarket fraud. That is why most supermarkets prevent cashiers from cashing out goods for family and aquaintances and have other appropriate control measures to detect this type of fraud (cameras, spot checks of till, observation of customers and which cashiers they approach, matching bills to goods bought after cashing but before leaving the supermarket). I have not seen this last one in Dominican Supermarkets but it is a standard in most large supermarkets in some Caribbean countries).
My sentiments exactly. The boyfriend should have been arrested also. He may not have been inside of the store but he was awaiting to drive the groceries for him to enjoy. Yes, he should be charged for aiding and abetting a crime.
Employers on a whole prohibit employees from serving relatives. Many employers also do not employ relatives depending on the type of business they operate.
Employees especially cashiers should know that these stores are watching (cameras, spot checks of till, observation of customers and their interaction with cashiers, matching bills to goods bought after cashing but before leaving the supermarket, and comparing the cash received with the register tape at day’s end).

Security cameras are a valuable investment and should be placed at every establishment where crimes might be committed…even in churches.
