United Workers Party files petition challenging Dec 6 election results

Voters await their turn at a polling station during the December 6 general election

The United Workers Party (UWP) has filed petitions in court challenging the results of the December 6, 2019, general elections in ten constituencies.

The UWP is seeking to have the court overturn the results in St. Joseph, Mahaut, Morne Jaune, La Plaine, Castle Bruce, Salybia, Roseau Valley, Roseau Central, Roseau South and Wesley constituencies.

The Dominica Labour Party (DLP) won the elections by a landslide margin of 18 seats to 3.

However, the UWP, which was part of a long campaign demanding electoral reform before the December 6 poll, concluded that the elections were not free and fair.  The party has accused the DLP of bribing Dominicans who live in the diaspora, to return to the country to vote at the expense of the UWP.

Linton told party supporters at a “thankyou” meeting shortly after the election that the UWP was taking the matter to court.

“We have not had much success in the court over the years but that is neither here nor there. It is a tool that we have that we will continue to use.”

He said that it is the UWP’s contention that things went wrong and “those things that have gone wrong must be set right.”

Election observer teams from the Commonwealth, OAS and CARICOM who monitored the elections stated in their preliminary reports that the polls were free and fair and reflected the will of the Dominican people.

Election observer teams from the Commonwealth, OAS, and CARICOM who monitored the elections stated in their preliminary reports that the polls were free and fair and reflected the will of the Dominican people. With this comment from independent observers, what is the UWP hoping to achieve through the courts? People please take stock, this is the behavior of an inept leader who craves the limelight. Mr. Linton seems to have a narcissistic type of personality. You should observe his mannerism when the polls were supportive of the UWP leading up to the election and how he basked prematurely in his probable victory eg, he took the salute at the parade, he misinterpreted Pastor Mac Laughlin view that a change is coming and his dress in blue as a forerunner to UWP victory and now this, I say it is time to get a new leader. The UWP talks about two-term limits, Mr. Linton has failed the party twice! Come on stand by your words and step aside for some new blood. It is clear, you will never win

I am very much aware of observers in the polling station during the election day process, they all confirm edit was free and fair. What I can’t understand from the UWP is their anger towards the diasporas who came to vote when I am sure that they had some of their own. Is it right to encourage the people overseas to come buy land, build homes, send money to their families, send barrels, donate to various organizations in Dominica but don’t come to vote? You guys are just unfair. Mr Linton you should challenge the 3 seats you won as well. In the south east we are firm with Labour and even though you would get a new date for election, Gretta Roberts and Mr Edwards would still be our parl Rep in Morne Jaune and La plaine constituency. All the way with Labour bring it on!!!

Mr. Linton Sir, I think it is a grave mistake for you to pin-point certain constituencies that should be looked over for the result of the December 6, election, in the court.

How do you plan to prove that the 3 constituencies you got were without fault and those others were with fault?

You received votes from those 10 constituencies; how are you planning to prove that your voters were faultless and the DLP voters were at fault. Also, how do you plan to prove the numbers at fault to give you the win in those constituencies?

Man, by the time that case is over, this coming 5 years will have ended. Your plan will simply delete the UWP; the DLP will be blooming and heading into a complete victory. It will be the fault of your incompetence.

You need to give up that leadership and allow someone else to keep your party on the move, even to take the role of governing in Dominica; but I don’t see this happening anywhere in the future, nah!

DNO, with respect, I do not recall any of the outside monitoring agencies claiming that the recent election was “free and fair”. I have seen congratulations to the Labour Party and the government and expressing that “the people have spoken”. However, this is not the same as establishing officially that the election was free and fair, especially not within the period when the opposition can legally lodge a claim with findings to the contrary. The opposition is perfectly within it’s rights to lodge a petition and I suggest we do not prejudge this and hold back till the official verdict is in.

    • January 3, 2020

The observers did not report on any iregularities, they also stated that the results reflected the will of the Dominican voters. However the leader of the UWP said that the elections in Marigot, Salisbury and Roseau North were free and fair but the 18 seats won by the DLP were not, what utter rubbish!! The same law was used for all constituencies.

If you believe that Roosevelt Skerrit won, why you al making such a noise then? As if you are afraid of something when there is nothing to fear. The final reports from the observers have not been submitted yet, so I shall wait till then.

        • January 3, 2020

Labour fought for every vote, this is not the time to allow propaganda to prevail. Labourites with not remain silent.

    • January 4, 2020

@Dominican, just because you do not recall that does not mean that it wasn’t said. Go back to the older news of DNO and you will read it along with photo of the certain observer.

The election was “free and fair”, the election result was the “will of the people” yes they said it!

  10. January 2, 2020

These guys are mad and frustrated that they did not win. They have to win for the election to be free and fair. Linton and Baptiste get some rest for 2020 and look for a new job and in your spare time watch some soap opera and pornorgrahies on you tube.

      January 2, 2020

I had really hoped that the UWP would spend time reflecting on what went wrong and what possible strategies could be employed to win the hearts and minds of Dominicans at home and abroad.

Please guys, let not spend the next five years in court. Somethings is obviously wrong and the party needs to realise and accept the fact that while Dominican what change they are not totally comfortable with some aspects of the party.

I agree that the DLP may have bribed people to vote; but UWP knew they were going to do that. What was the party’s strategy? There is nothing that the DLP did that was not expected, yet they won by a landslide.

I believe Mr. Linton would do a great job as PM, he is a fighter and I like his courage and resilience; but as we know very well no team keeps a coach/manager who can’t bring home the victory. It’s hard to say; but maybe it’s time to consider a new leader.

I thought Lennox said that the elections result was fair in only three constituencies (Marigot, Salisbury & Roseau North) where they won their three seats, so why is he only challenging the results in just ten and not the other eighteen where they lost? I seriously think this guy need his head tested.

Even though these dinosaur, conservative judges are adverse to overturning election results , you (UWP) must proceed. The election was fraudulent. It was tainted by all manner of wrongdoings. It’s not legitimate despite the pronouncements of those who embrace illegality. Fight on, for in the end, good always triumphs over evil. Good luck!

    • January 2, 2020

It’s 2020, you could advise your party to adopt a more political friendly attitude stop being so hostile and confrontational, it has not worked in the past and it will never work. The violence you all orchestrated before the elections backfired big time. Not all Dominicans hate Skerrit as you do as a matter of fact more Dominicans love Skerrit than those who hate him. @ Ibo France, could you explain why over a thousand less DOMINICAN voters voted for the UWP at the December 6th poll compared to the 2014 election. Did Skerrit pay the passage for these 1000 + UWP voters to go overseas so that they would be absent on polling day and not able to vote. You all are just a bunch of disgruntled losers and come next election reform or no reform if changes are not made it will be blows like old cloth….

Ibo MALAPROP France, good surely prevails over evil.
The result of the last election on Dec. 6 2019 is a perfect example of that phrase you made mention of.
18 to 3 is a clear example. The majority of GOOD Dominicans did triumph over the EVIL YOU and the rest of the likes like you were doing in the country. Dominicans triumphed over the BLOCKING of the roads and setting of the FIRES …. hooligans were doing/causing.

Heard Matt said on his show that it was a BLESSING in disguise that the UWP did not win the election because the country is in such a dilapidated state so let Skerrit deal with his mess!.. BUT IF SUCH IS THE CASE , why is the UWP CHALLENGING the Dec. 6th in the court? Is this an excuse for the beating his party(UWP) got? or
Is this an excuse to cover for such a landslide beating, 18 to 3?
Tell Matt to wipe away his tears and deal with his loss. His expectation did not materialize and his promise was destroyed.. 2020 is a new year and the next general election is in 2025 LET’S SEE WHETHER THE CAMPAIGNING will still continue up to this date by the UWP and on Q95.

Our witnesses are the OAS,CARICOM OBSERVERS, if you can get them to change their comments before the court, all well and good. We have had fifteens years to get electoral reform into prospective , and we chose to demand it after the date had been named to go to the poll to request it. Time wait for no man.Good luck away.

Stupes. Another waste of time UWP initiative that will yield the same result as the case against Skerrit being a French citizen. These guys keep spinning their wheels on matters that few people care about.
You lost the elections. Regroup and plan for the next one. That court case is going to get you nowhere.

It’s clear that massive irregularities occured!
It’s clear that the election was stolen!
It’s clear that UWP is a more powerful force in Dominica than DLP!
It’s clear that I have no confidence in our justice system!
It’s clear that UWP’s options are limited!
Therefore I fully support the move!!
Hope the matter is dealt with expeditiously!

Instead of saying massive iregularities occurred, tell all what those iregularities were. I would like to know what those iregularities were as the observers (including the darling of the UWP, the OAS) found no iregularities. The UWP has once again picked an issue which it is sure to lose. Of course the lawyers will be the winners and the UWP the joker.

The UWP is confirming 8 seats for DLP and three seats for their Party, with the results of 10 seats in dispute. I really don’t like wasting my limited time on Earth, however, based on that claim, the DLP would only need 3 more to form the Government, whereas, the UWP would need at least 8 more. With large victory margins in St. Joseph, Valley, Kalinago Territory, it would be hard to present a case. UWP, please stop wasting the Court time. Dominicans please demand better from an Opposition Party. The UWP sent mixed messages to the voters a few weeks leading to the Election and for that they have paid a hefty price. The UWP should be dissolved and some young fresh minds should begin planning a new Party.

    • January 2, 2020

These guys in the UWP are not willing to take advise. They are too conceited and think they know it all. What the UWP wants the world to believe is that all of the 23 thousand Dominicans who voted for the DLP were either bribed or forced to the polling station at gun point to vote for the DLP. The majority of Dominicans don’t like the UWP.

The only advice I give Lennox is not to let Edison into his affairs. He must not feel oblige
to do that because Edison is from the same village. He must remember it was Edison that lose the election to Rosie and so open the door for Skerrit. Leave Edison out of your play Lennox, that is my advice. You don’t need him and the country not ready for him as president either, trust me.

Lenox you must be careful what you wish for you asking to check results in some areas what if they recheck and they find you lose in Marigot Salisbury & Roseau north would you be satisfied. You know this case not going any where because there were observers, your effort to bring voters in fail and maby those you brought in vote DLP so stop crying accept defeat lick your wound and move on. Because what you are doing is just trying to keep your job as leader of UWP hope they kick you out and select another leader that will show Dominican more love.
