Dominican attorney based in the United States, Gabriel Christian, has called for popular resistance against for what he described as the “dictatorship” of Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit.
In a video statement, made in light of the snap election called by Skerrit slated for December 6, more than two years before it is constitutionally due, he also said that the prime minister must resign.
“I am a born Dominican and I will die a born Dominican, nothing will change that,” he said in the video Thursday. “You can take me and the many Dominicans, thousands of us, out of Dominica but you cannot take Dominica out of us. And so we will never surrender our flag and that is why we are asking for popular resistance to the dictatorship of Roosevelt Skerrit because that is what we have now.”
He described the prime minister as a coward, deceitful and an “inveterate liar” and laid out the reasons why he (Christian) thinks he should be resisted.
Christian said he supported Skerrit when he came into power, claiming that the prime minister even visited his office together with Colin McIntyre and Pastor Syncler Mitchel.
“We worked with you, we were part of your Dominican family, your friends,” he said. “We were not UWP, Freedom Party. Rosie Douglas asked me to serve Dominica as ambassador and I said, ‘Rosie when I met you as a child at Mike Douglas’ home in Zicak, Portsmouth, we didn’t do it for money and things.’”
According to Christian, Skerrit is now living his life in pursuit of money and material things.
“In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the most grievous pandemic in modern human history, out of the mouths of Dominicans in need you took $64,000 a month in rent for a mansion on a hill,” he stated. “You never give a stimulus, you never give an alleviation to the police or the civil service and you know that was needed.”
He stated that as prime minister, Skerrit has sold “tens of thousand” of passports and “left crumbs for Dominicans,” alleging that the lion’s share went to Skerrit’s friends.
“You kept millions, billions outside of Dominica, outside the consolidate funds in offshore banks,” Christian remarked.
He pointed out that two years before Skerrit’s current mandate comes to an end and after paying Sir Dennis Byron for a report on electoral reform in Dominica, the prime minister rushed and called early elections while getting rid of a number of government ministers.
“Why did you get rid of your erstwhile friends?” Christian queried.
He said this was done because Skerrit has a “nefarious plan.”
According to him, based on “good information” that plan involves recolonizing Dominica with people that have bought Dominican passports and who are able to vote.
“Then you will be able to recolonize, I believe, our country and you will never leave power because you have the vote of those who have paid you for a passport,” Christian stated.
Well it’s the first time in the history of politics a man is being accused of being a “dictator” for calling an election…

You have been living in the US for a number of years now, where you work, run your business, pay your taxes etc. and only come to Dominica when you want to promote and sell your books. Dominicans abroad have such lofty ideas for Dominica; yet they don’t have any effective ideas to help change Dominica.

Skerrit is not a dictator. Skerrit is egotistical and this happens a lot in leadership. Leaders become complacent and they detach themselves from their environments. They stop listening to the needs of people and instead begin crafting new rules to benefit themselves.
Skerrit was a promising figure when he first ran for office, but he engages in bad sportsmanship. He will be written in Dominica’s history books as projecting the qualities of dictators such as unveiling an unhealthy ego that hurts everyone around him.

How people in positions of power manipulate their power to their own advantage. Skerrit is no better than Patrick John or our Colonial masters, or our leaders in Africa who sold us into slavery.

One man decides what is best for the country. No delegate conference; handpicks and fires candidates; call a general election two and a half years before the official due date; completely controls law enforcement; influences the judiciary.
