General elections not free and fair counters Linton; we need fresh elections

UWP leader Lennox Linton delivers his post-election speech

Leader of the United Workers Party (UWP), Lennox Linton, believes that the 2019 General Election was not “free and fair” therefore he says his party does not recognize the results.

Elections in Dominica were held on Friday 6th, December 2019 with the Dominica Labour Party (DLP) being re-elected into office for a fifth consecutive term.

According to the preliminary results, the DLP won 18 seats while the opposition United Workers Party (UWP) took 3.

“The election was not free; the election was not fair. It was rigged and stolen, so we do not recognize the results,” Linton said. “We should not elevate skullduggery through a virtue of congratulating those who succeed with dishonesty.”

He continued, “Similarly, we cannot recognize governments where ruling parties pervert democracy, subvert the will of the people by stealing elections.”

He added, “We do not recognize this government that has come by the theft of the elections of 2019.”

He accused the DLP of bribing people to vote in the election.

“There is nothing right about bribing people to vote in an election,” Linton remarked. “So right there, we cannot be talking about a fair election.”

He contended that the people of Dominica, particularly the young people of Dominica, had their hopes and dreams set aside dashed by “yet another stolen election.”

“The young people of Dominica, I am more concerned about at this time…their parents hurt for them; their grandparents hurt for them,” he remarked, adding, “the future that they know is possible in Dominica, just continues to elude [them].”

The UWP leader called on the people of Dominica to demand fresh elections, “and as far as they are concerned, this illegitimate result renders elections null and void and it renders the government null and void.”

Linton insisted that the only way to move on is for the people of Dominica to stand up and rise and make sure that those who have done wrong must be made to pay for it.

“…That’s only how we stand up and do justice to our role…” he said.

The opposition-leader designate said his party notes the observations by the observer missions, two of them so far the OAS and the Commonwealth which have indicated in broad, that the elections reflected the will of the people who voted.

The report of the OAS Observer Mission has since been released and also supports the view of the CARICOM and Commonwealth missions that the elections reflected the will of the people.

“It seems everybody who is supposed to help us, everybody that’s supposed to give an idea of where we could be heading and how we could be heading where we are going, is turning their back on us,” Linton lamented.

“We don’t have no President who is working in the interest of the people; no Electoral Commission that works in the interest of the people, we have no police organization who works in the interest of the people,” Linton stated adding that there is a series of institutions of state “basically doing the bidding of the very same man who has decided there will not be and fair elections in Dominica, so there will be no reform.”

And what is being requested, he pointed out, is basic electoral reform, which involves merely cleaning the list of electors and implementing ID Cards for voting.

Meantime, Linton thanked those who turned out “in large numbers to cast their vote for real change and the UWP-Team Dominica.”

“This was an exciting time for us, following us through the many campaigns and the message for real hope and change for the people of Dominica,” he said. “I know of the great disappointment, the hope, the feeling of despair, what people are experiencing right now. I know it is a very difficult time for many people…”

You lost because you had no strategy. Your campaign was amateurish and it simply morphed into a personal vendetta. Independent observers cleared the election – you would be defending them had it gone your way. You do not represent the will of the people. Stand down, accept it, move on, and apply yourself better.

It has to be the DOC getting the large chunks, whilst the small ones living like parasites on the street. It cost parents plenty of money to send their children to school and, after graduated, they end up on the side road, puffing in and out. This is what you campaign on and the people were against it. The people voted to protect their children. You campaign on Skerrit and not for love of country. A Pen is mightier than a sword. Let the records show. Go do your home work.

Only the most arrogant man would let the country go up in flames to create circumstances for ascension to power. Only the most arrogant man cannot accept defeat and blames everyone else. “People can overlook any shortcoming, but they will not tolerate arrogance”. Mr. Linton, you are unforgiven for your lack of responsible leadership in the days preceding the election, and for your lack of humility in the days following the election…… and most of all for your unrelenting arrogance. Forgiveness and a new beginning will only come with humility.

Mr. Linton the people of Dominica have spoken already and even your own seat you almost LOST. So I believe if the PM rang the BELL again to PLEASE you, which I know he can just come up and said election on Monday again, house dissolved you will lose your seat very early this time. And next 5 years I believe you will lose your seat because what I seeing the guy who run against you very strong so be careful next time, all I can say is best you STEP down from this post or do like your former colleague, join the Labour party so at least you can become a senator if you lost or if you win be the deputy PM. Putting all jokes aside.

Mr. Linton continues to rant and rave and blames everyone and everything else for his defeat. Mr. Linton needs to come back to his senses and realize that he and the UWP ran an atrocious campaign. A campaign based on violence, fake news , misinformation, deceit and fake polls. The straw that broke the camel back was the ill advised blocking of the roads in Marigot and Salisbury. Clearly the UWP tried to disenfranchise Dominicans under the disguise of electoral reform. UWP would have lost this election but the margin of victory could be narrower. Mr. Linton you need to do the Honorable thing and offer your resignation as leader to the UWP.

  15. December 10, 2019

Wait a minute. Have you ever sit and ask yourself some questions Lynton. Like . “What have I done ” where did I go wrong “. A good leader would do just that. If you have all of these that is working against you it is definitely a problem . If DLP leader could take the hands of thousands of Dominicans and put an X next to his name. He is really good. Do the humble thing and resign. Like I said before. You are the biggest let down for the UWP. One of the simplest thing you could have done is to humble yourself. respect the wish of the people .congratulate the PM on his win. You refuse to do just that. So that clearly says the kind of leader you are.

  16. December 10, 2019

Lennox, based on my calculations of 29 responses to you, right now, the likes are 1008 against, and 479 for you. Only 4 of the 29 supported you.

So do you say that those 25 posters were paid to write their comments? Lennox, even here, the 25 posters are the people, the other 4 has no voice.

But you have said: “Similarly, we cannot recognize governments where ruling parties pervert democracy, subvert the will of the people by stealing elections.”

Who are the people that you speak of? You barely survived your candidacy by a few more voters, do you say that the votes you received were fair and free, but those of the Labor Party were cheats and stolen?

When do you plan to acknowledge that you are not on the path of God, to make the U-turn leading to Him?

Your negative mentality is the root of the failure you continuously receive. For as long as you continue to say: “My head is bloodied but not bowed” there can be no return for you.

Its obvious UWP requires new or improved leadership. In the least, one that is not trying to oppose democracy and side with foreign people against their own country but embrace democracy because it is actually working, offer solutions and ideas rather than polarize a small population of people even after an free and fair election based on feelings (a country cannot be lead by feelings), this needs to stop. If you’re UWP (united workers party)what laws have you proposed or enacted to protect worker rights and laws to protect employees in the workplace and laws to protect people from job loss. what laws are you passing to ensure wages are fair rand benefits are there? what is this UWP party about? is there a purpose besides defaming your own country in the eyes of the world? Criticism is not an idea, if you lost then accept it and work to implement your party’s policies with the representation you have, being disgruntled and taking elections personally is not the behavior of…

“If you stay at the helm we are sure to have Mellissa as the next prime minister come the next election”.

@Zandoli, once more you have spoken for me. Your thought above is the very thought of my mind.

I see Lady Mellisa as the next Prime Minister of our Nation, I am sure that is why PM Skerrit allowed her to run. What we should observe is that the UWP had Roseau Central for the 2014 election through Isaac Joseph, who lost at Roseau Noth.

I see that the people are voting for the candidate of their constituency, not just for the party. The DLP candidate needed more time to show himself to Marigot–Lennox would be out as well.

I believe Lady Mell boosted the votes for the Labor Party. Just like PM Skerrit, she is earning the Love of the people.

With 18 candidates defeated and the UWP needs 11 to sit as the ruling body at Parliament, Linton has a lot of work to do, or else he must resign as the leader–but who can replace him?

From the moment this man entered politics, I said he was bad news for Dominica and he has proven me right over and over. I am truly disappointed by your utterances boy. You are indeed a very troubled person. The best thing you should have done was concede defeat because you were defeated good and proper by the DLP. These people who are pushing you to continue making a fool of yourself in public are laughing at you. Gabriel Christain and the likes of him are only interested in their own personal advancement and are just using you to get what they want. Linton, you keep blaming everyone for you defeat in the polls, but the one thing you are not doing is putting the blame on the one person who caused all of that, and it is you. You and your people blamed the President, the high court, CCJ, you ask for observers, they declared the election free and fair. What you should do is step aside and allow the party to choose someone with a understanding of what it is to be a leader, if you don’t, there will not be a united workers party in the next 5 years to contest another election, so my advice to you is do the honorable thing and resign.

Skerrit calling election before reform was implemented was not a request, but an instruction from outside. Dominicans in general are too misinformed to realise that he is only someone else’s puppet. He said the Chinese would not be a friend to Dominica if he lost, which they denied. The oil which was illegally shipped (per UN sanctions) from Iran to China was via Dominica-registered tankers. Skerrit also supports China’s One-China policy. Funding his campaign was a Chinese investment as they are doing all over the world. Someday, Dominicans will wake up, but it might be too late.

Mr. Linton give it up. You botched this election big-time. You need to follow the lead of your deputy and do the honorable thing and bow out of active politics.

First you flipped flopped on your “hot button” issue of expatriates voting in the election. Then you decided to contest the election after insisting “no reform no election”. And after deciding to contest you rioted the country to stop it! WTF!! Man you lost a lot of credibility with the Dominican electorate.

As a consequence you got an “as. whooping” 18 to 3. From a four(4) term stale government that was ripe for defeat. They even took a seat from you RIGHT IN YOUR “BACKYARD!” So who do you think will listen to you with your talk of illegitimacy? No one!! Trust me the international community has long moved on from you. You are a failure and a disappointment. You got outplayed by Skerrit again. Time to pass the fight to someone more capable. Do the honorable thing and concede defeat. Allow the country to move on.

You fan the flames of mayhem when things do not go your way. You claim an election to be rigged when you do not win. You believe Al Jazeera except when they point to your corrupt behavior. You use bogus math to arrive at $1.2b and bogus assumptions to claim 8,000 overseas voters. What would you not do or say to get power? And if you ever got it, what would you not do or say to keep it? 37. My little take
    December 9, 2019

I agree with Mr. Linton that the election was not free and was not fair.vIn fact the election was stolen! But my problem with Mr. Linton is, before the election date was announced he knew the results would be stole. Before nomination we saw enough signs that the election would be stolen and, the week of election he knew everything was in place to ensure the election was legally stolen. My question is, why did he and the DLP even contest it? In cricket if west Indies knew everything was put in place by the Indians to steal the game, would it make sense to even play? I don’t know about Linton but lose for lose I would prefer to not contest and lose than to contest and lose. Now we all wounded you want to say it unfair? What did you expect in anything Skerrit is part of? Does Skerrit play by the rules? Boss I not with you this time. I will only not recognize the DLP if all three members of the opposition would step down and let it be a one party state se Skerrit can do what he wants

  38. December 9, 2019

Mr. Linton you should seriously review your position as leader of the opposition. Your past behavior suggest that your personality and leadership style is the greatest barrier to your party’s chances of success. Cant recall that you ever take/accepted responsibility for anything that went/go wrong…its always the other person or leader of the opposition. But its what very poor leaders do, deflect the blame. It is mentioned in the above article that all institutions domestically and otherwise are against you. That is virtually impossible, again it points to your poor leadership and unpleasant personality.
But since you continuously claim persons were bribed to vote against your party i guess it will be very easy for you to prove in the court of law. Linton its time for a new leader to emerge. Complements to you and your party’s misguided strategy the DLP gained 3 more seats. I wonder is Skerrit gave them the $25,000.00 you promised?

The people spoke loud and clear and he is ready to burn down the place. Leadership is everything and he lacks it completely. I voted for UWP, lets be honest the overseas vote made an overwhelming difference.
However, Linton what you should have done in this speech is resign. I also expect Hector to resign. Get two younger, more vibrant replacements and let them contest byelections asap.
I’m not a UWPite, but as a Dominican you shouldn’t have contested the elections. You played rigged game and lost all credibility on a local and regional level- accept the result and move on.
The fact you couldn’t get 20,000+ votes is a failure on your part. I estimate 90% of UWP were like me, we voted against Skerrit not for you. Thats a major issue which says you dont deserve to win. Also get rid of Edison and basically the entire UWP executive, these are serial losers who are out of touch with people. The longer you guys stay on fighting for power, the longer allu will stay out.

DNO has received karma . Interesting!. It would be nice if you would stop Mr Linton from screaming “fire” in the theatre. Stop publishing his intent on division of country.

I am not advocating silencing ,or taking away Mr Linton’s free speech rights. All I’m asking is that DNO becomes a partner in the national peace security of Dominica.

Can somebody please tell me why:
    – it was OK for overseas based supporters of the UWP to come home to vote and it was not OK for overseas based supporters of the DLP to do the same?
    – it was OK for Police Officers who support the UWP to have been actively campaigning while working at the Polling Stations and now for Lennox to accuse the RSS of intimidating voters?
    – it is OK for people like Gabriel Christian to want to dictate how Dominica should be run from the comfort of their homes in Washington, New Jersey etc. but make a fuss about Dominicans coming home to vote?
    – it was OK for the UWP to use overseas based supporters who came home to vote as agents etc and now complain that Skerrit stole the election?
    – it was OK for UWP supporters to have instilled fear into Dominicans by blocking roads, lighting fires around, stoning the police who were clearing the road in Salisbury, days before the elections and for Lennox to now claim that the elections were not free and fair?

You’re right! I was on the fence for a while, was thinking of voting uwp. But 3 things turned me off them: 1.: most important- their hypocrisy. They were the ones who started bringing diaspora down to vote but because DLP can bring down more they complain, the whole pretending to have an issue w/ passport sales when they plan to do the same, them making Ron green give up his US citizenship in order to use dual citizenship against DLP candidates, after he ran w/ it for yrs. 2. Their negativity. 3. Not condemning the violent protests. Personal accounts said that ppl had cutlasses and threw stones at ppl, tried to burn the police station. Robbery etc. I personally don’t support DLP. But will vote them due to lack of a better option. Maybe a change of leadership is what they need.

You all need to stop the nonsense and madness and put Dominica first, not a desire to get in power.

You seem to know it all have it all and can fix it all, well you are wrong again, the name of the country is Dominica and the people are called citizens who exercised their god given democratic right to vote for the Government of their choice. Had you won the elections would it be fair and free, had your party won the elections your song would be that the people have spoken and Skerrit must go, but you lost and you lost bad, and that is because the United Wreckers Of the People (UWP) is so shallow minded, well versed in political ignorance and highly trained in international stupidity, that you would like everyone to believe that the institutions that observed the elections are all somehow stooges of the Labor party. So you demanded outside observers. They came. You don’t agree with their verdict.

You don’t recognise the government, the President, the Police, the electoral commission, the result.

It seems the only thing you’ll recognise is a UWP victory where you undertook the worst election campaign ever known.

Did it occur to you that HALF the eligible voters in Dominica, did not vote?
Could it be you scared them with your violent undertakings?
You forgot about them, you forgot about “bread and butter issues”

The idea that every single voter from abroad voted DLP is either laughable or worrisome and a wake up call to your leadership.

After so many trips abroad, that you could not encourage or convince them to vote for you is telling.

Worst still the idea that overseas voters alone contribute to the heavy defeat is disingenuous. You’re either lieing to yourself or the people or both.

I agree completely with your sentiments. If Linton had any principle, he would have announced his resignation on the night of the election. But he will never do that because Linton sees the position of prime minister as a job with perks attached to it that he wants. He will have to be pushed out.

UWP has been their worst enemy for while. They have not allow the people who are best suited to win the elections lead the party. Since he resigned, Edison James has been pulling a lot of strings in the background to ensure his chosen ones lead the party. He did it to Timothy and later to Ronnie Isidore. Now they are reaping what they sowed.

Edison wanted his men in positions of power, except the people keep rejecting them.

I agree 100%. F skerrit, but UWP is a disorganised party whose campaign was detarched from the concerns of the masses. He alienated the business and
most social groups of society by vulgar criticisms, had no solid plan for farmers, made that weird $25k for everyone promise, was involved in undertable passport selling, disowned his supporters who were protesting, and failed to reign in on over zealous supporters who pushed away undecided voters.
Linton failed to connect with people on a personal level and couldnt understand the need for house to house on an islandwide level. No, he rather talk on Q. Another thing Mr Linton, how can the people of Dominica elect you as prime minister I you and your party are promoting violence in the country? This means you all were less popular this year compared to last year. Less people believed in you and your party.

That is false logic. All 10,000 arrivals could not have been DLP supporters; the highest capacity of a passenger aircraft serving the region is less than 500 and that would require at least 20 flights which of course our airport is ill equipped to handle. The port Authority recorded 15 additional flights by turbo prop with a capacity of 64 = do the math. The majority of voters came by sea, about 1,000. In any event, the difference between arrivals for the same period last year and this year (election year) is approx. 1,400 passengers, so that even if we were to ignore normal travelers and kids, your suggestion of 10,000 voters coming home to vote is ludicrous at best and irresponsible at the worst.

Linton are you sure you took your medication today? If you did, then you should asK Val Cuffy to double your dosage. You are completely bonkers. I also hope there’s a comfortable prison cell waiting for you in case you try to stir up trouble again.

Lennox now needs to recognize that his strategies over the past several years have failed. This was further compounded by his failed strategy of trying to intimidate voters over the last three weeks by having those rogues “protest”. He said that it was young people protesting but when you looked at those involved, it really was not the youth. Would one consider Brian Linton a youth?
If Lennox is the man he claims to be, he should give up the leadership of UWP and allow someone else who has a genuine desire to help people and who has some fresh ideas take over the reins; somebody who is not hell bent on destroying one man.. Roosevelt Skerrit. As someone said a while back, Lennox Linton has been an asset to the DLP.
UWP now needs to take on a new “persona” and stop being the party interested only in opposing, finding dirt on government officials and creators of fake news.
Lennox has been a complete failure as opposition leader and has not proven himself fit to lead a country.

My people Lennox Linton is not the person to be concern about he was never in power he was always in opposition he never had the power to change any things so you all still don’t understand the basic fundamental of the roll of the opposition in a democracy, his roll is to keep the ruling government foot to the ground when decisions and policies are made, What happened to the $ 1.2 million where is it where did it go that was his roll he did his work and all the other things that happened to Dominica,if he wasn’t doing the job you would be singing another tune, I’m not DLP or UWP but thank God I have commonsense and I know when somethings are not right so put politic aside and focus on the Island and it’s people that’s what we all have to do stop pointing fingers move on.

Yes indeed! I totally agree. An election always reflects the will of the PEOPLE WHO HAVE VOTED. However does that always make it right? No, especially not in this case. If those who voted had no right to vote can the elections be fair? No. If the process was tainted can the results be fair? No. Well believe you me that’s exactly what happened. The number of incidences of vote rigging and procedural irregularities make the results a mockery of democracy. It is sad that two organisation which prior to the elections said certain minimum standards had to be met for the elections to be considered free and fair knowing that those standards were deliberately ignored and taken advantage of are calling the results free and fair. Double voting, dead people voting, unregistered people voting and people registered overseas being brought in to vote and determining the outcome of the elections are the reasons the elections must be considered null and void. Until that declaration I call for protest.

But where they coming up with them stories na. So you have evidence of all this going on and all you’re doing is hiding behind a computer screen. The observers were here, no one could alert them to what was witnessed?

@Gouvelma, I am not surprised that is your post, you have demonstrated mentality all along

You have you based your composition on the “if” defense and the “he said she said” you have no concrete proof but that is the mentality which has miserably, failed your leader and you. It is now time to get rid of it.

It was not free and fair because you lost heavily. If you had won it would have been free and fair. Man, get a life and move on. The people have spoken. After all that destruction you caused, you expected people to vote for you. Live with it for another 5 years and get a job. Even your left eye all messed up.

Please, just do yourself a favour Lennox Linton. Take a leaf out of Joshua Francis’s book and concede with grace. Dominica does not need a childish sulk, it needs an effective opposition. If you cannot do that, resign and allow the talent in your team to excel. Enough already! You are not helping your alleged cause. The world is watching and you so called gate keepers for Dominica’s reputation and standards are making us look antiquated in our approach to choice. Stop it! The people have chosen. Respect the people’s right to choose. Concentrate on making future choices fair and transparent! Time out……

Linton, you brought on the results you receive on yourself by encouraging vandalism and violence to destroy the country. You had no interest in the country at all, all your was concerned about was money and reform which you had no input when you had the opportunity to change.
Accept the results, you did not win. It’s time to step down – haven’t realised that they did not want you as a PM.

Linton, it is time you gave up the fight and let someone else carry the mantle. I understand you have no other means to earn a living, but in the interest of the party, you need to bow out and let someone else take over. Hopefully your party will win the next election and they can set you up with a cushy job.
If you stay at the helm we are sure to have Melissa as the next prime minister come the next election. From what I see, you will never be the prime minister of Dominica.
