Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has opined that the United Workers Party’s (UWP) ill-preparedness is the reason behind their decision not to participate in the upcoming elections and not the country’s lack of electoral reform.
Skerrit’s remarks came during the official reveal of his new Dominica Labour Party (DLP) candidates on Tuesday evening, just two days after declaring a snap election which will be held on December 6, 2022.
Addressing his staunch supporters, just hours after news broke that the main opposition UWP said that they would not participate in the “fraudulent elections” due to the country’s lack of electoral reform, Skerrit labelled the party as “headless,” emphasising that they were in no way, shape, or form, ready to contest an election and therefore had to surrender.
While he stated that he “respected” the UWP’s choice not to contest in the elections, he, however, added, “if I was in a party that had no leader, no policy, no philosophy, or friends local or foreign, and no active presence in the villages and communities and constituencies in Dominica, I would say to that party, doh run, doh run. You do not want to get defeated for a sixth time again. “
The head of the DLP alleges that at least six individuals had declared an intention to run for leadership of the main opposition at their upcoming delegates conference carded for November 27, 2022. He, however, states that each of these individuals was only interested in becoming the leader of the party which caused further divisions.
“The conference was not going to unite them, it was going to further divide them,”
Skerrit said.
He also claimed that the opposition got wind of the new candidates before the launch, and knew that they could not defeat these individuals.
“That is why they’re not running. They know they could not win a single seat in the north of Dominica. They know they cannot test us in the south of Dominica. They know they cannot test us in the west of Dominica. And when they believe they had a little glimmer of hope in the east, when that woman who want to be leader of the ‘Workers Party’ from Lapaline saw the name that is going against her she said, well I fini bat, I cannot win that seat,”
Skerrit said to his cheering supporters. While declaring his party’s readiness to continue with the advancement of Dominica, the Prime Minister, deemed the DLP as the only organized party in the Commonwealth.
He also voiced his preparedness to lead the country with all 21 seats in the parliament.
He further stressed that this election is a serious time for the DLP to secure the future of the country and the well-being of Dominica.
“So let us not get confused by them. We have work to do. We caught them with their pants and underwear down,” Skerrit highlighted. “And you know it was not only down, it was completely off and they cannot recover from this. The UWP tonight is as naked as it was born. Let us remain focused on Dominica and what we need to do for
our country.”
Before introducing his ten new candidates, the Prime Minister issued a stern warning that his government would not tolerate “any lawless behaviour” this election season.
“I am warning them tonight that the nonsense they did last election by blocking streets and burning streets, let me say to them that we will not sit down and take that nonsense again in Dominica,” he asserted.
“That nonsense will not happen in our country,” Skerrit added. “You fight elections with policies, programs, and ideas, not blocking streets and burning streets in Dominica. It is not going to happen again and if it happens we will deal with it according to the laws of the Commonwealth of Dominica.”
Thus far, two of the opposition parties in Dominica, namely the UWP, and the Dominica Freedom Party(DFP) have said that they will not contest the upcoming elections.
The Alternative Peoples’ Party (APP) has not said anything publicly about whether they will participate in the election which will be held in just about three weeks, however, Dominica’s newest movement Team Unity Dominica (TUD), has called for all opposition parties to join forces to defeat the DLP.

This man claims to care about the citizens of Dominica, yet on Sunday, November 6th 2022, Skerritt took to the airwaves to address the nation, to announce a Snap election, while citizens were dying and losing the homes because of flooding due to heavy rains, and not once did he acknowledge the strife of the people. Skeritt will go down as the worse Prime Minister in Dominica, because he has bastardized the country for his personal gain. He is financing both ends of the drug epidemic in Dominica by financing the dealer and the user. I am 50 years old and I can say that Dominica is the worse it has ever been. Dominicans must stand up to Skerritt and put a stop to his abuse of the nation. A leader is supposed to uplift the most vulnerable of his nation, but these are the people most exploited by Skerritt. Skerritt enjoy your spoils because you children and your children’s children will pay for you sins. NO DICTATOR HAS DIED PEACEFULLY.
Look at the smirking clown with dimples. Of course ‘your’ party is ready. You had possibly as much as a year to prepare and you expect the others to be ready in 4 weeks. If ever I had an ounce of respect for you, it’s definitely gone now. Every person that keeps on supporting you can’t be right in its head. I often wonder if Dominicans appreciate how much the local media outlets give Roosevelt staying power. Instead of calling him out for his wrongdoings, they consistently keep laundering his lies, propaganda and gibberish.
Great example, look at this article. The reader gains nothing of substance from perusing it. All Roosevelt has done here is to taunt, mock and excoriated the main political opposition.
What about the none implementation of the electoral reforms that cost the country hundreds of thousands of dollars? What about his implied threats to use his ‘armed dogs’ to suppress the people’s right to protest?

I wouldn’t doubt UWP wasn’t ready just as Dominica is not ready for an election. In fact UWP was more ready than Dominica because the candidates that ran for UWP in 2019 are ready and in some cases they even have stronger candidates like Doc Fontain than in 2019. Yes they don’t have an elected leader but they have a deputy leader who is well capable to lead the party into election.
When one listens to the setbacks Skerrit highlighted the night he called the election it is clear that Dominica is not ready. Besides he had an 18/ 3 majority and over 2 years left on the mandate given in 2019. If he had so many setbacks then why did he not reshuffle his cabinet?
He blamed Erika, Maria and covid 19 for his failure; but Pm can you please tell us how many mansions you built during that time? Can you tell us how many backhoes, bulldozers, Trucks, boats and other items you own since Erika, Maria and covid?

The United Workers Party does not realize they have failed their supporters by not participating in this election.
They have told their supporters “we do not care what you have to say” we are not in this for your sake.
Most people who support a certain party will continue to do so; and if that party is openly, working for the Social & Economic development of its country, their voting percentage may or will rise.
If I did not do well in an exam, and I have the privilege to re-write that exam, I will make sure that I start studying from day one, after my failed try, to be prepared for the second try– whenever that exam is scheduled.
The United Workers Party, knew their force since two years ago, why would they not try be stronger two years later, if they truly want to be the ruling government.
Why did they think that the simply, “election reform” would make a difference in their favor without upgrading their effort for the people to see?

Circa the mid-eighties, a late Labour MP for Portsmouth once told the Honourable House of Assembly that Dominicans wanted change and they ended up with “la monay.” It seems the late MP’s words are now coming to fruition with that ‘la monay”. For, this man’s playbook is beginning to resemble that of another dictator in Zimbabwe who kept leveraging his disastrous politics to remain in power. But the man in Zimbabwe met his downfall, and strongman Napoleon had his Waterloo.
