UWP’s Team Dominica to visit Europe

UWP supporters came prepared to brave the weather to hear the message of Team Dominica
UWP supporters came prepared to brave the weather to hear the message of Team Dominica

The United Workers Party’s (UWP) Team Dominica have their eyes set on Europe as their next stop, after their just-concluded six city tour of North America.

Addressing a large number of party supporters who came out equipped with their rain gear and unmindful of the cold wind and stinging rain, UWP political leader Lennox Linton, said their journey which began with a first stop in Washington D.C., will continue beyond America.

“And we plan now to go across the Atlantic now, to Europe next week, we will be in Paris and we will be in London for two very important engagements. And what we are doing, we are setting the platform, for a global movement that will see Dominica, becoming the best place to live, work and to enjoy life,” he said.

According to Linton, “This global movement will see this year, the establishment of, Team Dominica USA, it will see the establishment of Team Dominica Caribbean, Team Dominica Europe, and it will see the establishment of UWP’s mission to change Dominica right across the global community.”

The UWP Political leader also promised that when his party gets into power, they will amend the constitution so that overseas based Dominicans who want to partake in the voting process do not have to leave their place of residence to do so.

“Because in this day and age of technology, where everybody around the world is voting overseas in their country, we must have overseas voting arrangements as well that are driven by modern technology,” he pointed out. “So our brothers and sisters will not have to be begging or waiting for somebody to bring a ticket for them, they will be able to vote from where ever they are for their Government in Dominica. That is our commitment, that is our pledge, and remember where you heard it.”

He also described their recent journey as one that also sought to engage the resources, talents and skills in Dominica and around the world for a better Dominica.

“We cannot go to American to talk about a red Dominica, or a blue Dominica, we went to American to talk about your commonwealth of Dominica, our isle of beauty, our isle of splendour….”

He explained that the UWP candidate for Grand Fond Dr. Thompson Fontaine, who was part of the team in North America, had remained in Washington D.C with his family and also to do some follow up work.

You should not waste your energy responding to this type of madness. There are 2 types of people that vote labor, those who are benefiting from the gov’t’s illegal activities and those who are not educated enough to see the disrespectful nature and the danger that this current gov’t pose to Dominica. So many hidden comments due to bad ratings. Do the comments have foul language? of course not? Disrespectful? Are you kidding? Negative? No! So why then do you think they get negative and bad ratings?

Why you may ask? That is because some like me have a different view and see things differently than the majority of board posters and viewers.

Most of the hidden comments are those of posters who see Dominica as a country that is prospering and the best place to be despite those who want the world to think differently, we see the good in Dominica and our government.

Granted there is always work to be done in building a country because people are being born every day, children become of school age, children becomes adults, and adults become senior cit citizens and senior citizens become the elderly and the elderly must at one point must die. So Dominica like every other country always is growing because it citizens are always growing.

We believe we have the Best Team in Dominica right now to continue the good work, some of us see it on the ground and we say it here on the board and some hate to hear that. That is the only reason.

We really wish those of you who live out of Dominica and never come home and depend solely on not too friendly media for news and information about your country are doing yourself a grave injustice.

My advice? Listen and read every media source on island; that is what I do; come home and see for yourself what is happening in your island for real, that is what I do; and I promise you, your views and opinions will change.

Dominica is home and will always be home. Always try to promote your country and in the best possible light until there is a very good reason not too and even then you look for the good in your country.

    Country First!!!

I expect this comment to be rated bad also.

i cannot understand what foundation you are talking about. the Portsmouth to Roseau road, can by no means cost one hundred million dollars that is a rip off, the north eastern comprehensive school never got completed, the millions spent on Melville-hall airport is a total waste of money- no additional tourist arrivals, no direct flights except the chattered flights that brings in labour party voters, no international flights, constant sea water spoiling all the vehicles of the north and north east, the death of agriculture in general, Giving away our pumice and crushed stones for next to nothing, taking loans to employ Chinese, hiring foreign workers rather than our own country men, selling our passports including our diplomatic passports to scamps and vacabons, and the list goes on.

Well Well Well God bless my eye sight reading this comment made by the leader of the UWP where as in fact MRS.UWP base in the USA is telling people they cannot go coming home to vote. “We must have overseas voting arrangements” UWP Have finally realize how important the overseas votes are. This is a 360 turn from 2005 and 2009 when petition was submitted in the court against DOMINICANS who came home to VOTE. HYPOCRITE.

  24. Gary
    January 26, 2014

Politics can sometimes involve the art of manipulation. Why is it when Politicians tell us something we accept and believe without through investigation. Why is it the UWP constantly manufacture controversies manipulating public opinion, the call for oversees voting is just another saga in the long list of controversies created by The UWP.

I do not think that Mr. Linton understands the logistics that would be needed to ensure such undertaking. When Mr. Linton makes the statement quote “Because in this day and age of technology, where everybody around the world is voting overseas in their country, we must have overseas voting arrangements as well that are driven by modern technology,” This tells me how little Mr.Linton understands what it takes to carry out such procedure without compromising an election, it is not only modern technology that is required to carry out such an undertaking, why are we naive and gullible to believe such thing, I’m not a oppose to such idea. What I’m oppose to is the manner in which Mr. Linton and His Party is exploiting and manipulation a situation.

I sometimes wonder why some of us cannot understand Political rhetoric for what it is,speech or discourse that pretends to significance but lacks true meaning. “This global movement will see this year, the establishment of, Team Dominica USA, it will see the establishment of Team Dominica Caribbean, Team Dominica Europe, and it will see the establishment of UWP’s mission to change Dominica right across the global community.” wow.

    • citizen
      January 27, 2014

I can clearly see why you say people are being manipulated, and Lincton creates controversies because your explanation, tells me why, it is people like you who are blind to the issues affecting the country, with a speaker who would hide the prime minister from answering legitimate questions in parliament, a prime minister who signed a memorandum of understanding for and on behalf of the people of the country and has never declared it o the citizens of the country,a minister of finance that do not understand the importance of income and expenditure, a labour party that do not know the meaning of economic development, a government that will do anything to remain in power, and you cannot seem to understand any of these important factors-good luck continue to LABOUR for your labouring will never end.

  25. Jamborie
    January 26, 2014

There is absolutely no confusion. Dr Fontaine stated that under the current laws it could be illegal for some persons coming to vote. Lennox Linton stated that his new government will revise the laws to make it easier for overseas Dominicans to vote. Where is the confusion?

The process will not be based on bribes and bringing in one party’s supporters, which Dr Fontaine rightly described as being immoral, but rather a level playing field. Now that is leadership.

    Brilliant strategies Team Dominica!

This is the poem that Winston Churchill read to parliament during the darkest hour of WW2.

Say not the struggle naught availeth,
The labour and the wounds are vain,
The enemy faints not, nor faileth,
And as things have been they remain.

    If hopes were dupes, fears may be liars;
It may be, in yon smoke conceal’d,
Your comrades chase e’en now the fliers,
And, but for you, possess the field.

For while the tired waves, vainly breaking,
Seem here no painful inch to gain,
Far back, through creeks and inlets making,
Comes silent, flooding in, the main.

And not by eastern windows only,
    When daylight comes, comes in the light;
In front the sun climbs slow, how slowly!
But westward, look, the land is bright!

    Arthur Hugh Clough. 1819–1861

The UWPwee has always appeared a confused and disorganised party and this is one reason why their proclaimed « change » is really no change at all. Let us examine the party’s vacillating stances on the issue of overseas-based Dominicans voting. For simplicity, let us focus on the party’s most recent positions.

During one of its recent meetings in the US, Mr. Linton supported Dr. Fontaine when the latter said that overseas-based voters voting in an election at home is an “immoral” act that the UWPwee discourages. In fact, they both went on to imply that doing so was also potentially illegal. They both discouraged the practice. This, position, according to Mr.Linton, “The Great White Hope”, was the party’s official position. Well, until Mr. Joshua Francis spoke in response to a question from the floor on the same topic.

Mr. Francis said that the party’s official position was that it was every eligible Dominican’s right to vote irrespective of where he lived. However, accepting plane tickets à la DLP 2009 was illegal. So, all who wished to return home to vote should do so on their own pocket. In other words, this official position, announced NOT by the party’s leader (who sat and listened) but by a junior member, was that all and sundry who qualify should vote. It was an open veiled invitation.

Now, Mr. Linton, back on Dominican soil, repeats the “official” position that was dictated to him rather impudently by his junior! Surely, this pappyshow cannot skip our attention. It confirms the lost and confused state in which the UWPwee has remained and it also confirms the often held view that Mr. Linton is merely an effective public speaker who has no clue about public policy. Hence, when he speaks he is simply repeating that which his juniors (Joshua, Thomson, Isaac, Sandford) tell him. The man is empty and the party is confused and still seeking its way.

    • Peeping Tom
      January 25, 2014

Above, I have described one example of the confused and disoriented state that plagues the UWPwee’s policy agenda. Other examples abound. It is not difficult to examine each of the party’s pronouncements and find the glaring contradictions and confusion that confirm that the party, even in opposition, has no clue of which direction to take in contributing to Dominica’s development.

Here is another example, the UWPwee has for more than a decade criticised the Skerrit administration as professional beggars who are also adept at making beggars of Dominicans. They then go n to denigrate and ridicule any human who exercises his right to seek public assistance. Yet, in a pathetic attempt at appearing transparent Linton and his Dream Team cannot shy away from the bare fact that they are begging overseas-based Dominicans for funds. In his own words during one of their US meetings, “$5, $10…we need “ whatever funds you have to offer. So, the same guy who tells Dominicans that it is wrong to beg, now braves the polar conditions in north America and Europe to beg. How much more confused and pathetic can your leadership be?

When your jesus christ made the statement at Point Mitchel that his IU had intercepted a UWP phone call to some one in the European Union asking for campaign funding an then turn around an accuse them of receiving Drug Money to fund their overseas trip; did that not sound confusing to you? An by-the-way your jesus christ has such a brilliant public policy track record how comes he (1) never holds press conferences, (2)does not inform the public (or populace) when he travels an (3) refuses to have public debates even with those persons whom u deem clueless? No wonder you an others like you keep chanting the ridiculous chorus ” if not jesus christ who” brain—-iant!i’m more confused.

What UWP is now busy doing is all we Dominicans asking our elected government to do. We do not have a problem with our politicians going to the USA or Europe to engage themselves with our brothers and sisters abroad, by meeting with them in a public forum that is carried live via the World Wide Web where all could hear and answer questions. However, the difference between UWP and DLP is as follows: 1. There is no way under the earth will Skerrit keep public meetings in the USA /Europe because the man Skerro is vulnerable to questions. He just Cannot answer questions because lies cannot stand 2.At no time will Skerrit take his DLP team out because he afraid they lick out information to the family members. So when going out, he can only afford to go with his Bagan friend Hartly Henry, who does not care a dime about Dominica and off course one of his crooked Attorneys. 3. Furthermore, UWP inform Dominicans of their accomplishments and every cent received. On the contrary, Dominicans have to go on the web to see where Skerrit was, who was with him, how much money he gets and what money is for. In fact the situation is so serious that we are left to wonder if we are not sold since he does not disclose information on the MOU. Dominicans, for these cause change is a MUST!

The DUP must do everything within their power to unmask that labor party – ’cause it seem like the labor party has all kinds of ropes and chains around them to keep them in power. DLP needs a bulldozer power to root them tay-tar out. Dominicans should also pray and ask God to intervene on the behalf of the Nation. China is waiting in the wing to take over Dominica. And please! don’t think for one minute that it’s impossible. Skerrit is not concerned about the future of our Country. He is a greedy boy running after money on account of us poor people. If you voted for him in the past; I’m asking you to please open your eyes and take a good look at the Country and the lack of opportunity for our beautiful young people who are coming up. We need to have a prosperous Dominica – and it’s not going to be so under that present Government. Let’s all take our Country back before it’s too late. Vote for UWP for a better Dominica. I come on this site for one reason only to fight for the Country I love, the Country of my Father and Mother. There’s no place like our Country. But if we are not careful we all will weep better tears – our Children also will cry and ask why didn’t we stand up for our Country? why didn’t we fight for the future of our Children? I am prepared to fight for my Children’s Future. Nelson Mandela spent all his life fighting for his people and his Country, and a good portion of his life in prison fighting for freedom for his people. While we have not reached to such predicament here in Dominica – we must endeavor never for it to happen on our soil. Dominica is blessed little Island, and the outside world knows it. We have the best fresh drinking water in the whole wide world. We are not over populated, we are well situated, we have very good soil for growing our food, so foreigners are using our weak and blind Government ministers to take the entire Country! As I have said before, don’t think that it cannot happen! We need to come together to prevent it from happening. God bless and preserve Dominica for Dominicans at home and abroad. I love this place so much, I’m very blessed to be a Son of Dominica’s soil. We’ll make it.

Imagine Team UWP went to safe Washington and tell people in the Diaspora how unsafe Dominica is and how they should not go to Dominica because they do not know what would happen to them. Tsk,tsk.

Now today, breaking news reporting, some person or persons armed with a gun opened fire in a busy Maryland Shopping Mall in a suburban Baltimore and more injured were hospitalized.

I wonder if that is what Team UWP really want to see happen in Dominica in a roundabout way, just to prove themselves right. Mixed messages.

I hope no Dominicans living there were injured neither anyone they know. It is a very sad and horrific thing to happen anywhere and to anyone.

#1. The united workers party have been accusing the present labour party of bring persons in Dominica to vote and also that most of the people which are coming to vote have been out of Dominica for more than five years.

#2. In that same breath, the united worker is saying that whenever they come into power they will put something in place which will allow person to vote without even coming to Dominica. Hello most of these persons may be out of Dominica for more that five years; very strange.

However there are a few things I would like to say. I am a Dominican and I am proud to be one. I love my country. By god’s grace, Dominica is blessed. I am sick and tired of people critizing my country. Every time certain persons open their mouth, they continue to bash the country. o Dominica poor, Dominica these or Dominica that. When we go out to the foreign countries, we need to sell our country, not destroy the image of it. We need to know that government come and government go. At the end the day, Dominica is ours to build. When we go out there and destroy our country or paint a picture that is so dark and gloomy about our country, what do you expect will happen? We are all different individuals, we see things differently. No two persons think alike. Let us learn to respect each other opinion. Once you are 18 years and over you have the power to vote in your hands. You have the power to initiate changes. Let us stop destroying our country by what we say and do. Let us start praying for each other and our country. Respect each other despite what ever political party they support. We are all different.

DNO you will be well served not to use adjectives like LARGE CROWD for any political party rally especially as you are coming up to election. If you say “a crowd” that does take away from the story because you have photos and people will decide whether its large or small.

Admin: The words “large word” are never used in the story. The actual words used are “a large number of party supporters” which is a first-hand, on-the-ground assessment by a DNO reporter who attended the event.

The second time in 2009 I was given a round trip ticket from UWP. And you want to know the rest, both times I come down to vote as a supporter of UWP I vote DLP – Why?????? because I can see progress in my Island. Honestly, this Mr. Lennox Linton got my full respect based on his presentation of his agenda for Dominica.

Mr. Linton is indeed a brilliant roots Dominican capable of taking strong leadership role in Government Politics. If given a chance, I believe Mr. Linton will do a great job.

However, Dominica is presently on what appears to be at the beginning of a historic stage of visible economic and social development fueled by the Dominica Labor Party and for the sake of Nation Building, putting aside self, Let’s unite and move this nation forward.

UWP should continue professionally, on keeping tabs on Labor Party.

Finally, No Change! Labor Party is Productive! Nation Building first! Peace and Love for Dominica!

Mr. Lennox Linton needs a Government Job in the Dominica Labor Party. This man is politically brilliant. He is good! I like him!

    Best Regards,
Vincent Rolle, Houston, Texas, Laudat Dominica.

Come on Vincent, quit speaking on both sides of your mouth. Is like having your cake and eating it too. Do you really believe that Dominica “appears to be at the beginning of a historic stage of visible economic and social development?” Give me a flipping break! Anyway bro whatever you have been smoking I need some of it! but be reminded that Change Must Come because it is a MUST!

      Assertive, NOT Agressive!

Mr Vincent Rolle, thanks for your honest feedback and qualities of leader and honesty you see in Lennox and the UWP, that we do see in Skerrit and his DLP government, they are corrupt to the core, to the bone. Too many questionable deeds. I strongly disagree on your perception of Skerrit as a leader if that’s what you perceive or wish to promote. He is not a leader fitted for Dominica.
I also have to strongly disagree with you as relates to the development focus taking place in Dominica under this corrupt government. There is none. The professionals inside government and outside tell you and waiting for change in leadership, and thus focus on putting into government meaningful and sustainability government, who respects the constitution and promote transparency in government.
I recognise your honesty as relates Lennox Linton and I concur fully but to go further his focus on development is better disciplined, focussed, sustainable, no handouts, no privileged friends, no hanky panky.
Skerrit lead government has killed our functioning institutions in Dominica and our people have been subjected to beggars. Have you missed out on this or you are blind to it.
We need to know who stole the Bin money and why did it take over 2 weeks to repay as was promised by Skerrit and his government. It took 6 months, Mr Rolle, don`t you smell a rat…a big big rat. I will tell you sir, they stole the money and shared it amongst themselves….and Lennox caught them stealing the states money with their pants down.
Mr Role I do not like politicians, especially this DLP government who steal the states limited resources and its poor people money for their own selfish aggrandisement and at the end lie about it using senior counsels to lie , protect and defend them.
      XHANGE IS MUST…….TEAM DOMINICA PLEASE

I think sir you need to ponder in the information that was disseminated for a while then reflect on the economic programme that is proposed by the D L P for a new term, look at their record for the past 14 years and see how you can com to grips with the raw realities.

  61. Switch support
    January 25, 2014

I believe I will support the UWP now for a very particular reason. If Lenox Linton can turn the UWP from a party that didn’t know which way is up or down a year ago and transform it into the high that it’s on; I believe he can do the same thing with Dominica. I now believe that he can remove Dominica from where it is to a new prosperous Dominica. That’s my take and that’s why I am switching my support from Red to Blue. Not for any other reason.

For those of you suggesting that to finance the travel of 4 individuals to north America is a hell of a lot of money for a political party better remove your heads from the sand. Because that is not as much as paying for plane loads of people plus
paying each person cash to come and vote in Dominica.Did you even question where did the Labour party get that much money to pay for all this?I am sure you have not questioned it and even if you did PM Skerritt would tell you its none of your business.
Have you any doubts that the China Memorandum of understanding which is still a big secret is where most of this money is coming from.
The brilliant concept by Team Dominica to not sell votes for a plane ticket and cash but allow Dominicans who meet the criteria ,which will be enshrined into law , to vote for the government of their choice to govern the country will allow Labourites as well as any other party affiliates to vote so what are you worried about.I guess you prefer it when only those who have connections can get a paid vacation at the expense of a political party in exchange for a vote. This is not how transparency works in an honest democracy.

The time has come to open the doors to political participation for every Dominican; the time has come to amend the Constitution to allow Dominicans with dual citizenship the right to participate in the electoral process; and the time has indeed come to allow Diaspora based Dominicans their inalienable rights to vote in Dominica elections without leaving their place of residence to do so. Kudos to you Mr. Linton and your team.

Dominica cannot develop without the support of her Disapora. With an estimated 20,000 and counting Dominicans of voting age living abroad, they can no longer be ignored. Even those who who are anti-Diaspora (Ministers of Government included) and insist on making laconic distinctions between “us and “them” depend on the Diaspora and it would be in the best interest of every politician to help open the doors.

When Mr. Linton took up the leadership of the UWP, he really fooled Skeritt and the DLP when he told them that he was a political novice. Since then he has inflicted some serious political wounds on them and to date they have not been able to find a cure. Normally, Skeritt and the DLP never believe anything coming out of Mr. Linton, but this time they believed him. What the jokers did not know was that Mr. Linton was surrounded by three top class strategists in the persons of Dennis, who was known to be the man with the master plan during the days of PJ and OJ. Thompson with his vast experience at the IMF, many people has credited him as the man to have saved many Governments in Africa from economic disaster. According to Skeritt and the DLP supporters, Mr. Linton was employed by Political Parties in Antigua and St.Kitts to Manage their political operations, if those countries can have such confidence in Mr. Linton, imagine what he is capable of going for his own political party.

The logistics of campaigning in the US and Europe for an election at home is mind boggling. This is nothing less than a fund raising gambit. If the “TEAM” wishes to paint a picture of the rampant corruption, horrific crime and economic disaster that has plagued the country, they could have provided us with such evidence that might otherwise be unavailable to the public. We of the diaspora not have to be serenaded in mid-winter with tunes that are accessible on radio.

    Brilliant strategies Team Dominica!

This is the poem that Winston Churchill read to parliament during the darkest hour of WW2.

Say not the struggle naught availeth,
The labour and the wounds are vain,
The enemy faints not, nor faileth,
And as things have been they remain.

    If hopes were dupes, fears may be liars;
It may be, in yon smoke conceal’d,
Your comrades chase e’en now the fliers,
And, but for you, possess the field.

For while the tired waves, vainly breaking,
Seem here no painful inch to gain,
Far back, through creeks and inlets making,
Comes silent, flooding in, the main.

And not by eastern windows only,
    When daylight comes, comes in the light;
In front the sun climbs slow, how slowly!
But westward, look, the land is bright!

    Arthur Hugh Clough. 1819–1861

Incidentally, Winston Churchill lacked academic qualifications.

What it means to have an uneducated leader!

In the debate a few years ago over whether Sonia Gandhi should have become prime minister, one element was not commented on: her lack of qualification. Not qualification in the political or constitutional sense. She had that despite the embarrassing hysteria of Sushma Swaraj who threatened to tonsure her chubby head—a most unpleasant thought—if the Congress president became prime minister.

No, what I mean is Sonia’s lack of education. She has never studied beyond high school and her knowledge of the world is entirely from experience, and not even partially from academic application.

As prime minister she would have been reliant on advice to the point of dependency on such things as foreign affairs, finance, strategic affairs and the economy. Had she plowed on regardless of the assumption that she knew what was best, we would have come to grief.

Usually, a lack of education produces two qualities.

The first is the instinct to simplify. The other, a product of the first and more dangerous, is certitude. Dangerous, particularly when one is convinced that one is “decisive”—a word that really means that someone who is quick in making decisions. Sanjay Gandhi, who was barely literate (he failed in, and then dropped out of, high school), had just such a dangerous certitude.

Doubt is usually the sign of an enlightened mind. In our parts, however, it is seen as indecision when we are assessing leadership and therefore something not heroic.

Certitude is seen by Indians as a virtue in making leaders strong and decisive. But it is equally an indicator that its possessor suffers from a lack of awareness of opposing arguments, of lack of data and information. This is a universal problem, of course. In the West, it is the conservative who yearns for decisive leadership and a stamping of authority. Later, when the decisive leader produces a war that is pure stupidity, the conservative is baffled and chastised.

Extreme certitude, of the sort we observe in Gujarat’s chief minister Narendra Modi, is actually a negative quality when coupled with a lack of proper education. Modi has never been to college and his degree is from a correspondence course.

His writing, which is all in Gujarati, is mainly hagiography. It is mediocre (perhaps it will come to wider attention now that he is where he is) and shows little awareness of the world. He has not travelled much outside India. Unfortunately, his English is also poor, which, in my opinion, has contributed to leaving his mind unopened because there is little access to the world for the Gujarati-only individual.

Modi would not have reached the position he is in today, within striking distance of becoming the prime minister, in a civilized nation because he isn’t qualified.

The rest of the world accepts this and it isn’t something that is particularly debated. It can, in fact, be easily demonstrated.

In the UK, the probable future leader Boris Johnson is from Oxford University. His degree is in Literae Humaniores, meaning the Classics of ancient Greece and Rome. Prime minister David Cameron is also from Oxford as is former prime minister Tony Blair. Former prime minister Gordon Brown has a PhD and so has Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel. Chinese president Xi Jinping also holds a doctorate and Japan’s prime minister Shinzo Abe has a master’s degree from the University of Southern California. France’s François Hollande has a postgraduate degree from the elite ENA (Ecole Nationale d’Administration). Australia’s prime minister Tony Abbott is a Rhodes scholar from Oxford. Canada’s prime minister Stephen Harper has a master’s degree in economics.

Russia’s Vladimir Putin, this will come as a surprise, also has a PhD. Foreign Affairs magazine reported last year that in 1989, “a 45-year-old Putin was busy defending his PhD thesis, The Strategic Planning of Regional Resources Under the Formation of Market Relations, at the St Petersburg Mining Institute. In it, he argued that Russian economic success would depend on creating national energy champions.”

Whatever else one may have thought of former US president George W. Bush, he was no yokel. He studied at Yale and then at Harvard. Bill Clinton before him was a Rhodes scholar to Oxford and Barack Obama was at Harvard.

This insistence on academic qualifications from top universities is not some form of vanity. It is an indicator, the strongest one and perhaps the only one, that the candidate has a fine and balanced mind. Manmohan Singh, our vacillating, indecisive prime minister, is more qualified than any of those above, as Obama himself acknowledges.

Oh my, oh my! and they say the DLP is desperate? I wonder who is desperate now.

So now they want Dominicans living abroad to dictate what government we have in Dominica? That they don’t have to bother come home and spend a few dollars to help the economy when they come home even if it is to vote but they want to be able to rule Dominica by remote control?

Talk about desperation? This Team UWP can they be trusted to do what is in the best interest of Dominicans living at home in Dominica?

People who have not set a foot in Dominica or cannot come back to Dominica for what every reason after they left the country would want to tell Dominicans at home what to do?

What happened on the North American Tour, no campaign funds except they make some promises that is not in the best interest of Dominicans living at home?

It is against the law for people on the voters list who come to Dominica every year to come to Dominica and vote but it is okay for my great grand children who knows nothing about Dominica and never set a foot in Dominica to vote in a General Election?

They go in the Diaspora and tell whosoever is listening don’t come because you might be killed – but you can stay wherever you are and put them in government. Are these people serious?

Desperate men do desperate things. The UWP is not ready for government; granted the want power, but Government? I hope their supporters have listened and are seeing who have their best interest at heart the UWP or the DLP.

I hope the press questions the UWP motives and their intentions and not only report what they say.

We hope we can have an unbiased press who cares enough for Dominica and those living in Dominica, who pay the taxes for education, medical and other important necessities in Dominica, the ones who supports the businesses in Dominica, and not their supporters who call the radio stations and write on blogs can realize winning an election for the wrong reason will not help the economy or the people who live on the island.

Some people will not even bother come home in the 5 years required for voting, and why should they? Because they can stay overseas and vote, so the 5 years requirement will be tossed off the law books so even coming home for the Creole Festival and Carnival will not be a necessity anymore. No more departure taxes and customs charges.

UWP are they for real? God help us. Remote Control Rule, no way!! Is that the Change we need?

Change must come DLP must take at least 2 other seats this coming General Elections.

@ Mamize, for your information, the UWP took the DLP Government to court saying that the DLP paid for people tickets to come to Dominica to vote. The court ruled that out, saying it was not bribery. So The DLP government worn their case , period. One question I have, When you give people free transportation to and from the polls ( to vote) is that illegal? No it is not, it is the same as buying a ticket for some one who lives over seas to come down to vote. The distant does not make a difference.

Do you know when a person goes in the booth at the polling station, how do you know who that person votes for? You can
Give people all the money in the world but you cannot control who they are going to vote for.

The problem is who is stopping them. Both parties are corrupt in their activities. If both are doing the same thing……..they are essentially the same party. You may think that Pappy is a joke but at least he cares about DA. He would need to be surrounded by competent people but at least he wouldn’t be padding his pockets. The main reason most people want to get into high office is for the payoffs. You have to get someone that is an independent that has morals and integrity and that is not indebted to those financially supporting them. They have to be able to make impartial decisions.

Well to have come out under all the rain to Lagon to hear from Team Dominica, this is really sending a loud message to our ARROGANT AND INSULTIVE PRIME MINISTER, that his era of a long trail of destruction to this beautiful country IS QUICKLY COMING TO AN END!
Words cannot express how happy i am to see and to be a part of this movement. I am calling upon OTHER CONCERNED DOMINICANS including those abroad to be part of the change. Dominica deserves better than this type type of leadership we have gotten under this gangof GREEDY AND RECKLESS MEN AND WOMEN,who have reduced your own brothers and sisters to beggars in order to survive in their own land. Our people should never be at the mercy of elected politicians, who curse and insult them.

    1. a lot of unfounded accusations will be made, even by their slaves, acolytes and cronies
    2. very soon we will hear of a BOGUS POLL telling us that Skerrit (Not Labour Party) will win ALL THE SEATS.
3.envelopes of money will be given to many.

It is very simple. They never said that those of us living overseas can not vote but that it should be done according to the law without bribery. U.S. citizens overseas can cast their votes while they are abroad. There is a system for that. There are similar arrangements in the E.U. We simply can adopt what already works and move forward, away from the noxious situation that prevails in our country today.

The issue was not whether Dominicans living overseas were entitled to vote or should be allowed to vote. The issues have been and will always be that the Labour Party is paying tickets for and bribing Dominicans to come down to vote for them.

For one its against the Laws of Dominica and two the people who have been living out of Dominica for more than 5 consecutive years should be removed from the Electoral list by the Electoral Department which is not happening.

The better thing to do is put a system in place where all Dominicans who wish to vote can do so without breaking the country’s laws or paying for one set to come down to vote for you and in some cases with our taxes.

What is good for the goose is good for the gander. We are all Dominicans and have the same rights and privileges not just the Labour Party supporters.

One thing that should be considered is that if you want to vote, then you have to pay taxes too.

    • Graham Chambers
      January 25, 2014

Take some time to think…the UWP was never against Dominicans living abroad coming home to vote if they are eligible to do so. They have condemned paying tickets and giving money to people who were ineligible or disqualified…Inform yourself, Americans, British, Australians and many countries know that their people who live abroad are still citizens and they make arrangements to have them vote wherever they live…The UWP is now proposing how to fix the problem, there is absolutely no contradiction…

The UWP has consistently said that every Dominican has a right to vote. That was NEVER an issue so STOP spining. However, per the Constitution there are “certain” requirements one needs to meet and those who do not meet the requirements are ineligible. These are “majority” of those who fly in for the sole purpose of voting even if they DO NOT meet the requirements. This also includes accepting tickets because that is bribery and both the recipient and giver is are breaking the law. This is troubling because the police (CDPF) continue to turn a blind eye knowing full well it is a crime.

All Lennox and the UWP is saying is that they will review the current text in the constitution and make the necessary ammendments that will remove all unjust barriers and vague language there-in. But just remember that because of TEAM DOMINICA, Change Must Come to our blessed land.

Shameless, could you explain the “certain” constitutional requirements that that one has to meet in order vote in dominica. ..as far as I know once you are a Dominican 18 years and over you can be registered to vote. There is a process by Law by which a voter can be removed from the register. However if someone turns up to vote and his or her name is on the voting register even if they were out of the country for 20 years they cannot be denied the right to vote they also cannot be questioned about their residency, all that can be done is to verify the voter and give him or her a ballot to vote

    • Bridging the cap
      January 25, 2014

I do not subscribe to your remarks for some compelling reasons so permit me to voice my opinion on this matter.

Whenever the UWP addressed the issue of overseas voters in every single state that they went to and on every occasion they were never opposed to overseas voters per say. What concerned them most was the illegality that surrounded that particular activity especially in 2009. They pointed out the provisions made in our constitution to guide that activity where it speaks to being away for 5 years and over without having visited etc… The other big concern for everyone was the bribery…did you not hear some of those people themselves confess having taken bribes? They allegedly got two way tickets and coats. Some of whom have been leaving abroad for many years and had never come back home since they left and here they were being offered an opportunity to come back at someone elses expense.

As a government we shall engage with the diaspora not to exploit them for their votes to keep us in power but to harness their resourcefulness as they possess skills and talents that can bolster our economy and help bring about growth and development in this country.

Remember a government minister accused the same diaspora of wanting to control Dominica by remote control yet his party went out there and allegedly spent millions to seek to get them to help in securing its re-election legacy.

That the UWP is proposing is significantly different from what your party did. The team left here (not a one man show) and we were kept abreast as they went along. There was nothing cynical, nothing secretive. It was all out in the open. This type of transparency illudes your party.

Imagine a guy from St. Joe questioned Prime Minister Linton on the issue of getting money for that trip. Instead of sending the young man to hell and rebuking him with a none of you damn business like Skerrit would, Mr. Linton took the time to explain and went further to say how much money they had collected thus far. In my humble estimation we now have a team we can trust because the bible says that who is faithful with little can be trusted with much. We are throwing our support behind team blue because we can trust them with the leadership of this beautiful country.

I see you guys came out here to look for pics of last night’s event, well be very afraid because if you guys think you have seen and heard it all, there is much much more to come. With Christ in our vessel we shall smile at the storm. Change is a must and no longer an option. It was your party that got us to select and elect Mr. Linton as your peeps sent out a clarion call for him to get into the ring. Mr. Skerrit went on further to say that he would run against Mr. Linton wherever he chose to run and so we await Mr. Skerrit in Marigot with baited breath.

Prime Minister Linton did warn you guys to be careful what you ask for. It was your party which asked for what it is that is happening now and it is a wonderful feeling as it is so exciting.
