Wickham says criticism of controversial statement by Skerrit is “much ado about nothing”

Wickham is a regional pollster

“A much ado about nothing”. That’s how prominent pollster Peter Wickham is describing the reaction to the statement by Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit that  “I run things in Dominica”.

The statement which was made during the official launch of the DLP’s candidate for Roseau South recently dominated social media and the airwaves for several days, with the prime minister being heavily criticized.
Skerrit said he had embarked on a mission to meet with every public servant in Dominica.
“I have met with the junior clerks and I hear Thomas Letang telling me to stop meeting them. My brother, I run things in Dominica”, he said
But Wickham told Dominica News Online (DNO) in an exclusive interview last night, that the prime minister’s statement should not have any serious implications on his political future.
“The reality of it is that the prime minister runs the country and I don’t think that should surprise anyone” he said.
In fact, he told our reporter that in small island states like Dominica, it is quite normal for the head of government to meet with public servants privately.
“A country the size of Dominica with a population that small should be well accustomed to having a prime minister interact on all levels. Everybody and anybody meets the prime minister and people shouldn’t be surprised,” he added.
Meantime, Wickham recently conducted an opinion poll in Dominica and although he did not reveal any figures to DNO, he said there are issues that concern the people.
One of them has to do with the rebuilding of Dominica following Hurricane Maria in September 2017.
“People are concerned whether the bounce back after the hurricane was sustainable and with the hurricane season here, people want to know whether the island can withstand another disaster,” he added.
Wickham said based on his knowledge, people are also concerned about the long term development direction of the country.
“Questions of employment, the economy are of concern to the population. People are thinking about issues of airlift to accommodate the two major hotels that are coming on stream…” he added.
He said the “white elephant” in the room however, is the Leader of the Opposition Lennox Linton, who the pollster said, many people don’t seem to favour.
“As I moved around, I get the sense that there is a level of displeasure and the belief that he doesn’t match Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit” he said.
He said while Dominicans may become weary of a prime minister who is in office for as long as Roosevelt Skerrit is, the alternative is not something that people are happy with.
This is not the first time that Wickham has claimed that Lennox Linton is not popular enough.
Wickham, who has conducted several opinion polls for the Dominica Labour Party, is expected to reveal the results of his latest poll soon.

I am not a pollster but I understand statistics very well. Mr Peter Wickham is very clear in what the people’s concerns are and realizing that those concerns have affected the standing of the DLP and recognizing that the people are weary of the Honorable Roosevelt Skerrit’s leadership, Mr Wickham tries to put his twist on things to make it look like the Honorable Lennox Linton is not liked by the people in an effort effort to influence people to vote for Prime Minister, Honorable Roosevelt Skerrit and the DLP at the next general elections instead of voting favorably for Honorable Lennox Linton and the UWP – Team Dominica as the polls have been indicating.

I wonder how much he was paid to try to continue to sabotage the image of the Honorable Lennox Linton in an effort to help the DLP at the next polls.
I want to warn Dominicans that this Bajan is not interested in our well being as Dominicans. They already stole ROSS from us, what else do they plan to steal?

One point of correction…the Prime Minister is head of the Government of the country. He or she and the other Ministers run the Government of the country not the country. The Private Sector organization provides leadership to the Private Sector but every business Owner/Manager runs his/her business. This applies to every Sector in the country’s Social and Economic Life. Only in China, Russia and North Korea where Dictatorship and one Party Rule exist do the Leaders believe that they run the countries and not just the Government. In places like China, even where business appear to exist, these businesses are all owned by State Owned Corporations (SOC) where most of the income go to the government and the operators receive special dispensation. Dominica is not such a country and will never become.
What gives Wickham the authority to talk to that subject? When was he elected to government in Dominica? To whom is he responsible?

Your blind loyalty of Skerrit have forgotten to whose interest a government stand for, and that is the people of Dominica suffering under Skerrit and you fools out there trying to prompt Skerrit to a level that he is in and cannot get out because he has not presented himself as being diplomatic and qualified enough, sufficiently to be Prime Minister of Dominica where he has created poverty, and reduced our poor people to beggars and has killed our agriculture sector. Well, that wont happen in Domininca especially as this clown Skerrit depends on outsiders to try and attempt to raise his profile, that has no credibility. Skerrit is a failure and has failed our Dominica. Mr. Wickham, can yo not do an article of the failure of Skerrit tenure. How’s he has fleeced our economy, or resources where we go for foreign currency is now depleted and gone, for example, Ross University in Barbados, what do yo say of that Mr. Wickham?

There is much meaning to the Prime Minister’s comments and Wickham knows that!
It was nineteen years ago when we Dominicans were bent on having new, young leadership – “give the young man a chance” was the mantra, and we did. We were fooled by his deceptive smile, his dimples, his youth! Nineteen years later, we are worse off than where we began, given the massive influx of money to the country over the years.
I can remember when the Freedom Party was in power, Eugenia was the Prime Minister and her position was recognized and respected, but decisions were made, not in a vacuum, but after much discussion with the ministers; she didn’t “run things!”
Now our government is run by a young man who went from living on a teacher’s salary to being among one of the richest men in the Caribbean. We all know his riches did not come from prudent investments or lottery winnings, and we find nothing wrong with that! Seriously??

What Wickham says or thinks is not important. What is important is what we in the V/case Constituency, expeacially Penville people think. What we think is Clemo is our incoming parlrep, incoming minister and one day become our first Pm. We the people of Penville and the Vieille-case constituency cannot wait for Skerrit to ring the bell so we give him his marching orders, just as Catrelle gives batsmen when he gets them out. We don’t talk much but we know how to act and how to vote. For the first time we have Skerrit on the ropes. He is very scared. For the first time he has to go to the DIASPORA to try to recruit voters to come vote in his constituency. But we want him to know that when they come they will be voting Clemo. I am a labourite but noway am I going to live Clemo and vote Skerrit. Skerrit had 19 years to represent us and we and V/case don’t have a health center and he left Thibaud without a school. So we waiting on him. He could pass his envelopes but that won’t change…

When people speak, you should listen… not only to what they say, but their choice of words and what they do not say.
Mr. Wickham used an expression in his rebuttal… “A much ado about nothing”. This phase says a lot and tells me one of two things, if not both.
1: “Much ado about nothing” was a play written by Shakespeare, interestingly it was a comedy.
2: “The expression much ado about nothing” means : to complain about small maters with the word “ado” meaning making a big fuss.
Whether Mr. Wickham meant this was just a ‘joke’ or it is just a ‘small matter’, Is very concerning to me. The expression “I RUN THINGS IN DOMINICA”, is a comment you would expect from a dictator, like Kim Un Jong of North Korea or Rodrigo Duterte, President of the Philippines, not a Prime Minister in a democratic country like Dominica or Barbados. If Mr. Skerrit said his “government run things”, perhaps I could be more forgiving. All I see is a Proud, arrogant, self-centered, narcissistic…

Sir Wickham, that’s your opinion but it’s not respected because it is not based on facts. You do not understand why there is much significance about this statement, Mr Edison James said”i am in charge” and he was voted out. I am an objective labourite and the fact is Mr Lennox Linton is a much more intelligent, honest and astute leader than the prime minister. No man is an island so it’s God and the people of Dominica who run things. Mr Linton has grown in popularity but also you should realize his campaign is TEAM oriented while Skerrit campaign is focused around him. The fact remains that the UWP dubbled the amount seats in 2014 and took 3 seats from the labour party, so it means that Mr linton is getting more popular.

Lets focus on things people care about, primarily their pockets and future. Speak of the hopelessness, speak of the low morale in the government department as qualified people are ignored for promotion in favour of much less or unqualified party supporters. 31. June 12, 2019

“Much ado about nothing” is not to say that what PM Skerrit said has no grounds; it is a very “strong statement” to let Dominicans know that: “He has the Primary Authority over the affairs of our country and her people”, that is what some people fail to accept or do not understand.

As the Prime Minister of Dominica, as far as the works of Government is concerned, there is nothing that can be done without the “okay” from PM Skerrit–the people of the opposition has to accept that fact.

Mr. Letang is only standing on behalf of public workers (whatever) to take their issues to the Government; he cannot tell the Prime Minister what to do and what not to do; that is what PM Skerrit mean by saying: “My brother, I run things in Dominica”, not you!

Mr. Wickham is a Labour pollster and has done well financially from conducting business for the DLP. Despite his erroneous mouthing off, UWP and Mr. Linton shall prevail. The statement, “I run things” gives you a clear insight as to Skerrit’s dictatorial and narcissistic thinking. This is the said reason the country is ‘run down’, no consultation with the people nor the opposition. Employment, overseas travel, infrastructure, agriculture, sporting, entertainment and recreational facilities, crime, wages and salaries, pension, healthcare, the public service, public buildings, housing, manufacturing, fishing sector, every thing to sustain a comfortable living is abysmal. Skerrit is madly in love with Bajans. This DLP political pollster, his closest political advisors, many mega contractors are Bajans. He even handed ROSS to Barbados. Nothing will stop the Blue Tidal Wave from occupying the helm of government, long deserved.

Me Wickham is entitled to his opinion. Those of us who don’t only hear this off the rails statement by Skerritt, but sum up all the previous utterances, like “it is not your damn business where I get money” etc. know that Skerritt has shown his true colors over 15 years of dealing with his style of leadership. It’s not one that endears us, so let Wickham spin his spin, that’s what he’s being paid to do. Mr. Wickham, if it’s not something to be concerned about, then why are you addressing it?

What does Wickham know about Hon. Lennox Linton’s popularity, at this present time. If he wants to know about the popularity Hon Lennox Linton, he must listen to the Saturday and Tuesday nights DLP political radio shows. He must listen to all the DLP rallies all over the country and the only name he will hear is Lennox Linton. For his further information, their was a political meeting in Lagoon, a few years ago, Hon Lennox Linton’s name was mentioned, in particular by Skeritt, 2100 times, within four hours. He must support Skeritt’s statement, I know for sure, Dominicans cannot never forget the million of dollars, Bajan companies made off the DLP during the 2014 elections. Therefore, he is not stupid to publicly say anything adverse about Skeritt, even though he is thinking of it.

      J. Baptiste, there is a big difference between the Church, the place of worship, the physical and the priest, Nuns, Bishops etc. The church as a place of worship has to be recognised and endorse at all times. What you and I must Not and never endorse within our place of worship the church (irrespective of faith) are; misbehaviour, insulting, abuse the place of worship, Priests those priests, lay Ministers, volunteers etc, who seem to be or engage in nefarious behaviour and bring our church, place of worship into disrepute and insult. We endorse the church fully, we condemn the poor and deceitful, disrespectful behaviours of priests, lay ministers, pastors, bishops, acolytes, volunteers etc.
The church is a Physical building where we congregate and pray and reflect. We are the church, we show and practice our faith and confess of being naughty. But we are brave enough to be protect, promote of faiths, talk to all people regardless of faith and place of worship. Lets be playful & good.

It really shows the DLP under serious pressure. This is classic case of damage control. The issue with Skerrit Vs Linton. Skerrit is very charismatic by using the states funds as his personal bank going around the island pretending to be Santa Clause. Linton doesn’t have those resources, i doubt any other PM would ever do that. The poor and vulnerable are being fooled into believing they have a savior while as Whikham says, questions of unemployment continues to plague the island. Huge amounts of cash is going to be spent on this election (We have not even seen Buju and Machel yet). For every dollar spent by DLP candidates to gain favor for votes, the island is going back further by decades. Sad reality.

“Lennox Linton is more popular right now than he has ever been, considering the alternative. Everyone is seeing the light, even the Laborites”.

@Really, there is two sides about being popular; one is on the positive side–like being well loved; the other is on the negative side– like being a nuisance. We can know the difference by the nature of the opinions. Popular doesn’t always mean good, you know!

There are two people with that “popularity title” in Dominica. I am not surprised to know who you have chosen; seeing that you belong in the meg minority where your popular one belongs. Pitiful!

You see Elizabeth, that is where your failed Skerrit and corrupt Labour government is today and has been for 19 long corrupt lying years. Your Skerrit is a failure, immature and ridiculous in the decency and philosophy of politics and good governance. People like you have brought Skerrit to the bottomless pit and abys of corruption. That is an undisputed fact. I have come to realize that the dimples and false sense of charisma has not benefited the country as such but more the members of the party closest to the Prime Minister and ministers of governments
Even those getting contracts have allegedly been in conversations about they having to dish- out kicks. It is clear that some get to eat all as opposed to the All Shall Eat mantra that I once subscribed to. Roosevelt Skerrit is my friend and brother. I can’t say the same about Lennox Linton but I am willing to support the latter in his bid to govern this country because I come to realize he is about country whilst the leader I have long admired is about self. If not, why drag Mel into this, what happens to their young children? I see greed and avarice even on her part too. In my view and in light of the concerns that Wickham has sighted, Roosevelt Skerrit’s leadership and stewardship of our economy is a very failed experiment. This time I am voting for…

The boldness in you people from another country to continue to interfere in our election. You can use as much shakepeare you want but we will not be fooled by your cleverly attempt to try to give the impression that Dominicans don’t favour Mr. linton. You are right that he doesn’t match his opponent because Mr. Linton is a man of God, a man of integrity, a man who fights for Dominicans ,( many great men have been killed and jailed for fighting for the poor) Mr. Linton will not squander and gain riches on the back of my people. The majority in the country are poor( Wickham you sure know that) and Mr. Linton will not take advantage of their vulnerabilities and say, I run thing in Dominica. Instead Mr. Linton will ensure the people get out of poverty by creating employment and give Dominicans back their dignity to work hard and use it to put food on their table. I know many of my labourite friends don’t want to be begging, this is why they will vote UWP.

    • June 12, 2019

“give the impression that Dominicans don’t favour Mr. linton”.

Linton Supporter, first of all, that should be “Linton” not “linton”. So even the way you write his name is a “down” for him.

Now according to the “news article”, Mr. Wickman said: “the Leader of the Opposition Lennox Linton, who the pollster said, many people don’t seem to favour”

He did not say “Dominicans” do not support. Well, are you not a Dominican? And I am sure there are others like you–only that they are the minority; that is where the problem lies, when it comes to getting the win–good Lord!

And majority of the people favour Mr. Linton which is the same as supporting him.
I can see you pay much attention to my writing but you should instead
ease the government of Canada of all that resources.
And what surprise that a Dominican favours a Bajan as he gets rich on the tax payers of Dominica.
And you putting the Lord in your writing but He always had the minority. So what does that tell you? You should read your Bible.

        • June 13, 2019

@Linton Supporter, me, pay attention to your writing! Or is it the other way around, based on your comment above.

Well, this is none of your business, but let it be known that I contributed to the resources that the Canadian Government is using to give me the services which I presently need.

You are wrong to say that I encourage the “young people to rely on the DLP”. If you read my comments so much to remember one that I post some time ago, you would have seen me saying again and again, that the “Government cannot employ the whole population of Dominica”.

When have you ever encourage them to get up from their buts, by giving them some ideas of how to help themselves? Or perhaps your mind is just as empty as theirs?

Well said! Excellently done! You have concisely put it in a nutshell but relayed the hollering cries of the masses so succinctly. Wickham does polls exclusively for the Labour Parties in the sub region, including his country of birth, Barbados, to sway public opinion in their favor, if you ask me. Read between the lines. His ELEPHANT in the room is likability which he claims favors Skerrit. The lifeless economy that is not producing any means of employment for able bodied people, is the greatest impediment to the reelection of Skerrit and the corrupt DLP hangers-on.

So, Wickham is part of the ploy to demonise Lennox Linton in the hope of defeating the UWP at the polls. The DLP (also known as the Skerrit Labour Party) and Wickham realise that DLP days in government will come to an end at the next elections. The strategy of the DLP and its lackeys is to denigrate Lennox Linton personally, hoping the denigration will appeal or even frighten the electorate into voting for Skerrit and his Labour Party.

Folks, Mr. Wickham is right!!! With regards to the PM’s statement, there is nothing to see here. A statement can be benign or caustic depending on how it is interpreted.

I will let my fellow posters be the judge based on the following simple questions: Was Skerrit elected to be in charge of the affairs of Dominica? Is Skerrit the Head of State? Is the Skerrit the duly elected leader of Dominica?

If you answered yes to the preceding three questions then the answer is YES! Skerrit does run things in Dominica.

Be reminded though, that you have the collective right and power, and opportunity to strip (or not) Skerrit of that honor and privilege come election day.

@Constructively Dissatisfied – Who really is supposed to RUN things in such a complex thing as a country – one supposedly a democracy?

The elected government of the day & the supporting technocrats in the various ministries or the one man who heads that government?

How comes when things go bad in Dominica under Roosevelt “I run things” Skerrit watch, it’s never his fault but is either Linton fault or UWP fault or a hurricane fault or imperialist forces fault or somebody else fault?

Why did Roosevelt “I run things” Skerrit replace 13 candidates in the DLP for the upcoming elections when by his own pronouncement, is he dat “run things in Dominica”?

Simple logic would suggest that if things are not going well in Dominica, it’s the ‘runner of things’ in Dominica who should be put out first.

Constructively Dissatisfied, your ignorance is appalling. Allow me put you straight.

Was Skerrit elected to be in charge of the affairs of Dominica?
No! The Government of Dominica is. And affairs are run by the government by decisions taken collectively by cabinet.

Is Skerrit the Head of State?
No! The Queen is, and her representative on Island is the President of Dominica Mr. Charles Sarvarin.

Is the Skerrit the duly elected leader of Dominica?
No! I answered this question before. He maybe the duly elected leader of the Dominica Labor Party, and he may be the Prime minister of our Government, but our Westminster style of Government is not a dictatorship. In making executive decisions he still needs to seek the approval ( albeit ceremonial) of the President. In addition decisions are taken collectively by Cabinet some of which needs to be ratified by parliament.

So Skerrit really doesn’t run things… he can be remove with something as small as an x or a vote of no…

You are right. Political campaigns are usually psychological warfare. The political party with no new or practical plans resorts to the most vicious personal attacks on the leader of the opposing party to try to define him/her as unfit to run the country. The country is in deep economic, social, political and physical mess and Wickham main focus is likability. Skerrit buys likability at the Red Clinic, NEP and with bad boys by giving away the country’s money. Is this sustainable? How is it this man missed the rampant corruption, numerous unfulfilled promises, the medieval infrastructure, darkness in government. Although he mentioned some concerns, such as, airlift in and out the country, astronomical unemployment, ability to build back better, underdevelopment of the island, these are just a few of the hundreds maladies plaguing the people.
