UPDATE: Woman dies following incident at Good Hope

police do not cross

The police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident which led to the death of 32 year old Curien Francis of Petite Soufriere who resided at Good Hope.

According to a release from Police PRO, Inspector John Carbon, at about  7:45 am on August 9, 2013 it was reported that Francis, who was speech and hearing impaired, was crossing a street at Good Hope when she was struck by dump truck.

The vehicle registration number TE275 was at the time being driven by Lyndon St. Louis of Castle Bruce.

Francis sustained multiple injuries and was transported to the Castle Bruce Health Center where she was treated and further transported to the Princess Margaret Hospital Accident and Emergency Department.

She was pronounced dead upon arrival by a medical practitioner.

A coroner’s inquest will be convened to be followed by a post mortem.

Investigations are continuing.

It is so funny how we are so quick to judge and make judgement not realizing once we are here in this imperfect world bad things that we never planned for will happen to us. This young man is one of the most kind and loving young person one can ever come across. I know this was not deliberate and witnesses around will tell the police that he was not speeding. I feel so much for that young lady I know you were a spark in your community and well loved by your family. We are both hurting her family and our family; but i know that God never gives us burdens that we can’t bear.

  7. Bald Tires
    August 11, 2013

The business of any and anybody driving a dump truck on dominica roads needs to be re examined by law enforcement.I find too many accidents involving heavy trucks and buses and cars by extention. The condition of tires on these trucks is another thing to be looked at closely. So many times we see accidents and the vehicles in question have bald tires driving up and down d/a’s treacherous mountain sides. The requirements and means of testing individulas who drive the public and those heavy pieces has to be reconstructed. We have more heavy trucks more cars more people all running on traffic rules from the 60’s.My solution:Drug and alcohol testing after accidents like this one with random testing on any public transport and heavy truck driver.Constant monitoring of tire conditions of all vehicles on d/a roads by police. When u stop a vehicle to search it for marijuana why not do a vehicle inspection right there and then as that should be a top priority.Oops i could keep babbling all day on the matter.Just remembered it wouldn’t make a difference because Dominica has no traffic laws or so it seems. How can such a mountainous country allow people to run around on vehicles with such bald tires where rain falls almost every day.

The dumper not license and maybe not insured too. The driver license not up to date. We take chances and when accidents happen we looking for sympathy and cover up. We cannot bring the dead back to life. Please operate within the law.

    • August 10, 2013

I do not think people are giving thumbs down to the people extending condolences. I think the thumbs down is for those who write STUPID/IGNORANT posts.

Although I, personally, do not give a thumbs down unless it is necessary, you should agree that some of these posts are outrageously ignorant.

A sudden death in whatever manner is painful for the family to bear. My heartfelt sympathy to her family and of course all her friends who especially loved her and enjoyed her company as she did yours. I realize how much you will miss her.
Her sudden passing creates a void in your life. Take heart. You can rest assured that she is in the presence of God. He has made her whole, able to hear and talk.
As God observes your grief from above, know that His Holy Spirit, The Blessed Trinity is with you and is covering you with His mantle of love, consolation and is blessing and strengthening you.
    It is customary to pray:
Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May she rest in peace. Amen!

  22. The Authorities
    August 9, 2013

The “Pedestrian has the Right of Way” rule is being instated in the driving laws of Dominica.

This will ensure that drivers are aware of the possibility that pedestrians may be hearing impaired, so “horn blowing” to alert pedestrians is needed, but the ultimate responsibility to avoid hitting a pedestrian is the driver’s.

As educators we do not have to address someone who is impaired in that way. she was a human, she had problems, but the world does not need to know what she was suffering from. i hope that the person who wrote this, already send apologies to this girl family. this is so rude to describe the deceased this way. get to the point. It is said even though some are physically impaired, God gives them other talents to make up for what they lack, be it the gift of a friendly and loving nature and personality trait.
If you reside in Canada and as I always include those who reside in the US and Europe, you will notice this about the physically impaired or the majority of them. They are not helpless as some perceive them to be. They are gifted in other respects. God endowed them with special talents which they make the most of and also given the opportunity to expand and utilize them. They could put us who have all our faculties to shame. She must have been a loving, pleasant person. This was her gift from God. R.I.P.

    August 9, 2013

That is so sad and I extend my most sincere condolences to her family.

Thank you DNO for saying she had a speech and hearing impairment vs deaf and dumb like the other news media did. I hate when people are referred to others in belittling terms.

No professional should refer to anyone as deaf and dumb.

    You are far more professional!

      August 9, 2013

While I agree with the need for use of euphemisms, there are readers who would understand “deaf and dumb” far easier. There was nothing wrong with words like midget (little people), infirmary (nursing home), Dull/ slow (intellectually challenged). I understand that you may be exposed and used to other cultures but trust me there are those who are not as sensitive.
Hope we can make the progress though.

      • true
        August 11, 2013

i absolutely agree. why are people so sensitive? these are common terms! why do we always fancy luxurious things over simplicity?

    • August 10, 2013

The impairment could not have made any difference. The person driving should have realized the PEDESTRIAN and either stop or at least slow down.
