24 year old Niccala Thomas of Calibishie who resides at River Estate, was forced to pay $150.00 compensation to Beauty Wise forthwith, or spend 2 days in jail.
This, after she pleaded guilty to stealing 2 packs of Sensationnel hair weave valued at 150.00 on December 18, 2013.
In addition, she is to pay 1,200.00 by March 29, 2014 failing which she will go to jail for 3 months.
According to acting inspector of police Valda Powell, at about 1.37 pm on December 18, Thomas entered the store and walked to the hair section where she took the weave and a pair of pants and then went to the “trying room”. She returned to the rack a few times and then placed the empty weave pack on the shelf and left. During the week, the establishment’s staff observed the empty pack and after reviewing security camera recordings, saw what transpired and management then called the police.
On December 23, 2013 at about 10.30am, the police went to Thomas’ place of work and told her of the report but she denied stealing anything. saying she “know what she bought.”
However after she was confronted with the information, she admitted to taking the weave and said she was told how to do it by another girl who had been doing that all the time. She also told the police that she was willing to pay for it since she did not want to lose her job.
Before sentencing her, magistrate, Bernard Pacquette told her, “you are a young girl and its sad at your actions…merchants are hurting at such behaviors by you and others, you seem remorseful, you have pleaded guilty and its your first offense but I have to send a clear message to you and others that such behaviors will not be tolerated. I hope you will still have your job, don’t let that happen to you again be careful.”
The 150.00 fine was paid.
In another matter, 20 year old Joel Hector of Yam Piece has been placed on 5,000.00 bail with his mother, Norma Harve, as surety. He pleaded guilty to threatening, and not guilty to beating, his girlfriend Anika Xavier on December 27, 2013.
Trial date is March 14, 2014.

Last I heard there was talk about it but no legislation enacted … if I’m wrong, then please correct me. Years ago, someone literaly got away with murder because the video tape evidence could not be used. Hmmm … guess that’s what happens when you have no lawyer, money or “big” name.

It’s sad that the magistrate had to hand down that vigorous punishment on a young lady who admitted that she literally stole the weave. The young lady is not a habitual offender. If I am not mistaken, I understand that her fine was compounded by an additional $1500. This inhumane judgment is no warning to anyone. A code of practice should be issued to the magistrate on on how to deal with these matters without being so brutal.
