Women in Dominica encouraged to turn out in large numbers for ‘Respect for Women’ march

Women across Dominica are being encouraged to turn out in large numbers today to participate in a march to demand respect for women. The march dubbed ‘Rosa Parks Women, Respect for Women March’ will begin from the Pottersville Savannah at 3:00 p.m. and culminate at the Dame Eugenia Charles Boulevard at 7:00 p.m. Participants are asked to wear or carry something pink.

“We want all women, as many women as possible, women and girls in Dominica. Not just women, we want the men to join us too. We need their support, so women, girls, men, everybody in Dominica, we want you to join us…,” Vice President of the United Workers Party (UWP), Francisca Joseph said while speaking on the ‘Workers Voice’ Program on Q-95 Radio on Thursday night.

She continued, “We are standing today because we want to give a message to those who think all is well and they can do what they want, and then women will just sit there and take everything. We are no longer going to take it.”

Joseph pointed out that part of the objective of the march is calling for the resignation of Attorney General Levi Peter, who on  Wednesday, September 27, 2023, during a parliamentary session, took the floor to criticize the opposition’s choice of Anette Sanford, a former opposition senator, as their nominee for the presidential position, where he referred to her as a ‘drumstick’.

“We are calling for the Attorney General’s dismissal and all those who continue to aid and abet as well,” she remarked. “If you cannot call wrong by its name, it does not make sense,” Joseph remarked. “You are supposed to be the keepers of the constitution.”

Furthermore, she said Attorney Peter is not representing the Dominica Labour Party (DLP) he is representing Dominica, “and so you fight for the rights of Dominicans. That is what the state pays you for.”

She argues that for too long women have been disrespected in Parliament and no one stands up for them.

“We are talking about quality, not just quantity of the number of females in Parliament, but the quality of representation that you will give in Parliament to help with the whole issue of gender-based violence. Because of this abuse of women’s rights,” she stressed.

The route for the march is as follows: Those participating will gather at the Pottersville Savannah next to the Catholic Church at 3:00 p.m. Then move South along Goodwill Road, proceeding across the E.C Loblack Bridge onto Independence Street, then eastwards along King George V Street, northwards up to Bath Road, down to Hillsborough Street, then up to Old Street and West along Cork Street. They will then proceed south along Dame Eugenia Charles Boulevard and culminate at the Cruise Ship Berth for the meeting. The meeting is expected to begin at 4:30 p.m.

The theme for the march is “Unite to Preserve the Dignity of Women in Dominica.”

Idle and petty retirees and bums making a hullabaloo about nothing. Go roll a rosary, fish for mullet, or volunteer at the Infirmary.

The curious thing is that everyone sat and listened to the statement in Parliament and no one said a peep until the cognitively challenged one at Q95 lit a fire and told them to make a noise. Puppets!

There is no logic to it. how can one demand respect. look how long women have desired respect from men. the government their husbands. its 2023. one would have thought that it was obvious by now that it is first by having self.respect that one will receive respect. not by asking or demanding it..

I mean look..you go out on a march to make a point but you turn it into a party. how can black people be taken seriously..

Your accusation is patently false. There was nothing to protest about. Mr. Lennox Linton is an exemplary figure in society. Don’t even try to besmirch the man’s character for it is beyond reproach.

“Mr. Lennox Linton is an exemplary figure in society.” Lol! Oh come now! Even Linton would find this statement preposterous, beyond the limits of the absurd.

          @Peeping Tom
Your comment is extremely empty. Why is he not an exemplary figure? You should have expressed it. I rank him as the most exemplary figure we have had in the political arena from 2000. Can you say that for the Starboy of Stupidity? I certainly will not. He has been a political cancer, because his reign in office has been the era when corruption has reached its zenith on island. Honourable Linton has exposed the corruption.

Ibo MALAPROP France, When your king Lennox called the women and young girls of the land prostitute. He went as far and spelling the word, you saw nothing wrong in that so there was nothing to protest about. But there is much to protest for hearing the word drumstick, or giraffe! You are such a hypocrite and so bias.

…and while this march is; once upon a time, did a speaker at a political meeting call Dominican women prostitutes? Asking for fairness and no partiality in judgement.

While agitating for smutty tongue Levi Peter to vacate his post, Madam Pampalam should be booted also. She started it.

Has anyone ever heard her make a high-grade contribution in the House? Having this lady in parliament and expect her to make meaningful contributions to national development, is akin to putting a fish on dry land and expect it to climb a tree to pick fruits for you.

women are making more positive strides than men. more women are graduating from college than men. Most of the top positions in government are occupied by women. Most of the judges and magistrates in Dominica are women and we now have a woman president. What more respect do Dominican women want. Again the UWP is trying to abuse Dominican women

Not sufficient residents turn out to support important issues such as this one. Dominicans seem to be fearful. Fear of losing the few crumbs from Roosevelt’s table.

The future doesn’t belong to the fainthearted, it belongs to the brave (fearless).

Change is not handed to you on a golden platter nor happen overnight. You will have to fight tooth and nail for it. Nelson Mandella, Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr., Mahatma Gandhi, Malcolm X will readily attest to this if they were still alive.

A drum stick (or drumstick) is a type of percussion mallet used particularly for playing snare drum, drum kit, and some other percussion instruments, and particularly for playing unpitched percussion.
Specialized beaters used on some other percussion instruments, such as the metal beater used with a triangle or the mallets used with tuned percussion (such as xylophone and timpani), are not normally referred to as drumsticks. Drumsticks generally have all of the following characteristics:
They are normally supplied and used in pairs. They may be used to play at least some sort of drum…

We want all women as many as possible said Francisca Joseph vice president of the UWP.So that march is not a march for women,it is a political march organized by UWP.Again UWP using women in Dominica for political gain.Any and all women supporting that UWP political march is dishonest. The later part of section 21(2) of the constitution says a person is not qualified to be President if he is engaged in any other OCCUPATION for reward. The UWP nominee for President new she was being dishonest in accepting the nomination for President while she was still employed at the college. But,again, dishonesty, lies, greed and corruption is the blood of UWP.To even mention Annette name in parliament is accepting and supporting dishonesty,it is even worse marching in the name of a dishonest person, using Dominican women.March on drumsticks, march on,democracy is alive and well in Dominica.
