No Deal: No Triple Kay at Creole in the Park

Triple Kay perform at CITP 2016

Telecommunications provider FLOW has not been able to seal a deal to get popular Bouyon band Triple Kay on its lineup for the 14th edition of Creole in the Park (CITP).

In fact, General Manager of FLOW Dominica Jeffery Baptiste told reporters that he tried everything possible but the new Trinidad based Promoter JC Management made it difficult.

He explained that this year particularly, FLOW had to get into some “extensive negotiations to try to convince them (Triple Kay) to do what I think they have done ordinarily over the last 13 years thereabout.”

The negotiation process started when FLOW reached out to the band and offered-as they have always done over the years with every other band-the date, day, a performance fee and the time in which FLOW would like them to perform.

The band then directed FLOW to their booking agent and Baptiste said the agent immediately rejected.

“He did not accept the day, he did not accept the time and he also did not accept the performance fee that we proposed, which is a performance fee that we pay during previous years which we consider to be very fair,” Baptiste explained.

He said what was surprising is that the performance fee equates to more than what FLOW pays most of the other local bands.

Then Baptiste said FLOW accepted to adjust the performance fee and accept to some extent what Triple Kay was counterpoising which was significantly higher than what they have paid in the past and what is being paid to every other local artiste on the lineup.

But that still wasn’t enough to convince the band which calls themselves the “Bouyon Kings” to accept the deal.

Another stumbling block was the proposed performance date.

Baptiste said initially FLOW proposed Tuesday which is the opening day, however the band through their agent rejected the offer and requested to perform on Wednesday.

“We moved again on that point and got them on to Wednesday. We had them at a time we felt was reasonable…4:15 pm on Wednesday. They again rejected and insisted that they needed just the Wednesday, but prescribed the time that the band plays on the Wednesday”

The back and forth continued and FLOW responded informing the promoter that it couldn’t accommodate Triple Kay on that day because contracts with other performers were already sealed.

“So, we maintained we will increase performance fee, we will shift from Tuesday to Wednesday and at that point he still rejected.”

Baptiste said even at that point he still didn’t give up and attempted to negotiate directly with a senior member of the band over the weekend, however his offer was again rejected.

Baptiste said because of the company’s continued passion to promote local groups Triple Kay deserves to be on the stage.

“They are maybe one of our successful and most popular bands and we think they deserve to always be part of CITP” he said.

Baptiste said it is regrettable that the band is not on the lineup this year.

The CITP is carded for Tuesday October 22nd to Thursday October 24th.

One of the initial PURPOSE of this EVENT, was to provide up and coming ARTISTS, some EXPOSURE so that they can be catapulted to higher heights. It should not be used as a HOME for any one band or groups of bands.
So Triple Kay’s absence should serve as an OPPORTUNITY for other ACTS to get a chance to shine. Triple Kay does not need CITP, however many smaller bands do need the exposure, so STOP concentrating on ONE band. Dominica is full of TALENT.

:?: Most people on that slave plantation mentality island do not understand management and business. Most of you speak and say things without thinking or having a clue furthermore having a an intelligent reasoning,. It is not all proposals that a band or any other entity accepts, especially when they have professionals doing the management and promoters. Not because some of you want the band to perform that they should accept anything proposed to them :?: By the way, I’m not a supporter of the band, neither I’m I a supporter of CITP. As for me,that band neither play music nor can anyone of them sing, they’re pit latrine waste,in my opinion!!!

I love your comment, but since you have no control of the English language why would you be chastising people who don’t understand basic management principles. Do yourself a favour, go work on your own English grammar because you sound like you picked up your concept of what proper English grammar is from a slave PLANTATION.

I don’t blame Triple K. Jeffery Baptiste has run Cables/Lime/ Flow into the ground. Now even Triple K can cut style on them. Smh. It is a shame what Cable and Wireless in Dominica has become.

Jeffery you should be smarter than that my boy. Triple K playing you and FLOW big time. If it was Digi they would jump at it. Ask your PM to back down and see how quickly they will accept. Ever heard of the phrase “I will pay you NOT to support the competition activities?”. Thats alive and well in Dca. Its called “commercial colluding”. Now you know bro. It is ALLEGED that Tripple K don’t need the money because they SHALL get paid for pushing you and Flow to the curb.

I believe that FLOW should now take a principled stand and do not invite them to CITP for the next five years. We are the ones who made them and now they want to make demands as though they are great. The cacophony they call music with its limited tolerance and audience should let these guys realise that they don’t bite the hand that feeds them. They should learn that by their very action they have taken one step closer to their own self imposed demise. It will not be long before they bite the dust.

Everybody on here chastizing the band, oh they greedy they this they that. People stop and understand that the band is now signed with a management company. That company manages, promotes and administrates the band. It is the management company at blame. Not the band. they cannot take it upon themselves now and just do the show, as it goes against their contract. It is not a matter of triple kay being greedy, it is a matter of the management company not fully understanding the dynamics on the ground and the impact. It cannot always soley be based on dollars and cents, especially during the independence season. However, when you are dealing with corporate entities, policies and regulations are usually in place to be adhered to. right now Triple Kay is simply an employee doing what they are told based on the contract that they signed with this company. Please understand this. On the other end the company needs to ensure the band gets exposure and proper pay.

If Triple K signed a contract relinquishing all their rights to a management company (MC), that would be stupid. After all, it is because of the effort of Triple K that their MC gets paid. Furthermore, I cannot possible see the band being in the dark and having no say about the discussions that were taking place between their MC and FLOW. Triple K knows the local market and should have guided their MC accordingly.

Years ago, there were a lot of Trinidadian bands coming here during the summer. My wife and I used to look forward to checking the line ups. Most of the Trini boat rides had a band. Now you will not see a Trinidadian performer or band on a boat ride because they priced themselves out of the market. You will only see these Trini performers at big events where the promoter can make big money. If Triple K is not careful, they will end of on the same pile of dead bands.

    October 4, 2019

what did we expect when they signed with this Trinidadian company. i personally dont believe that the company may be doing a good job in promoting the band and getting enough international exposure. i watching still. So who is the lineup?

CITP is bigger than any one artist, band or performer. Great opportunity for another local artist or band.

The show must go on and that it will.

I do not see an issue with Triple K not playing at Creole In The Park. Whatever the isuue is between the band and organizers, there are times when a band or artist will not perform every year at the show. aT the World Creole Music Festival, do we see Midnight Groovers, Exile One, Ophelia, Michelle Henderson and others perform every year, No. So why are persons happy or not happy if Triple K is not performing at CITP this year. I beleive we are making an issue out of nothing.

      October 4, 2019

Ibrahim triple K let themselves be politicised by Skerrit, no artist shoul ever do that. That can never be a good business and is the kiss of death for these artists. Just like business you cannot align yourself too close with one political party.

      • Ibrahim Brohim
        October 4, 2019

This has nothing to do with politics. Do you remember When Triple K was the signature band for Flow, well now Triple K is with Digicel, not saying that is the problem. I can say Triple K is an International Band, they now have an International Promoter, so I would assume that the bargaining chips have changed. Promoters have to make their cut also

    October 4, 2019

Really Really Really. Here is a band with no lyrics no clarity in their music a lead singer who cant sing and they have booking agent saying fees too low and want to perform different time. This is going to be the best CITP without them. But I’m very disappointed Jeffery said he offered Triple K more money than the other local act. I think all the local acts should withdraw now and demand higher pay. Just a rubbish band

That’s the thing with them artists. They all for the art n lack in the business side. Yea it’s all good they’re being represented by a big international agency but it looks like they gave full control to that agency. In business it has to wrk both ways. I bet even if kkk wanted to play even if is out of patriotism in their own country they cldnt? Cuz there is no room in their contract that makes them make moves without the agency’s say so.

The lead singer recently went on so much Bout how much love he has for country..citp is part of that. So many diasporas n visitors coming n want kkk…but yall are controlled by an outside agency so u can’t perform. Sad

Triple Kay will fade away pretty soon people just like all other bands that came before it . There are other bands and acts in dominica that are more vibrant more energetic and very modern give them a chance. Triple Kay ain’t all that anyway, they tired.

      October 4, 2019

Triple K is the top band in Dominica right now. Like it or not, the other bands just DO NOT have the same vibes. Ive seen people go on the side to sleep through the other bands and even popular artists like Keks and not so popular “artists” like Reo. But as soon as The K play their first note!!! Everybody waking up, putting back on their shoe, wash their face all kind of fing for the day break specialists. So yes we have other bands, but they just cannot do it like Triple K. So Triple K would rather go to the park and listen to other bands, earning nothing, than to accept a little less than what they requested?

In any type of negotiation you do not always get everything you ask for. You have to recognize when the other party has reached the end of their rope.
As a youngster being mentored by an older Jewish gentleman, he told me, in any negotiation you have to leave something for the other party. That stuck with me to this day. Getting everything you need and nothing for the other side will likely leave a bad taste in their mouth.
Triple K has a booking agent but at the end of it all, the final decision is theirs.
