Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has referenced the $214,772,689.41 in remittances sent out of Dominica through MoneyGram and Western Union as evidence of the existence of jobs here on island.
The information from the report, according to the Prime Minister, who addressed a news conference yesterday, shows that these monies came from foreign nationals who are working in Dominica, particularly in the construction and agriculture fields.
“So when people say where is the work, Dominica doh have work, this money didn’t come from America. It is coming from Dominica going out of Dominica,” Skerrit declared.
An employee at one of these institutions who spoke to Dominica News Online (DNO) estimates that over half of this amount was sent out by Haitians.
The individuals claimed, “On any given week we can add up the amount that is transferred to Haiti in excess of 100,000 dollars, and that’s just at our company.”
Similar declarations were made by the prime minister in May 2021 when he said that despite the COVID-19-related economic crisis, the economy was showing indications of recovery as millions of dollars were sent abroad by Haitians living in Dominica during the previous two years.
“To also say to the Dominican public when we complain that there is no money in the economy or there are no jobs, the record shows that just Haitian nationals sent out 22 million dollars in 2020 via money gram and western union,” he stated.
“22 million dollars in COVID-19 period…and in 2019 they sent out 23 million dollars. So I wanted to put this important piece of fact so that people appreciate that we may not be where we want but there are opportunities for us as Dominicans to do so,” Skerrit added.
Skerrit, how stupid do you think we are? In a real country you would be sacked for a statement like that.
Once again the double doctorate dude thinks that ordinary people are fools. Dominicans have always left our shores to seek better opportunities abroad where the wages they received in exchange for their labor and their chances of getting good compensation for engaging in free enterprise is a better return on investment than the low wages in Dominica. Individuals make the best decisions for themselves and their families. Remaining in Dominica for the lowest pay rate in the sub-region isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. Many people leave Europe and migrate to the US because of better opportunities and better pay. To boast of many job opportunities in Dominica has to be accompanied with the other factors such as cost of living, wage rates, etc. This statement by Skerritt is nothing but lipstick on a pig.
This is just one of Roosevelt’s many nuttin burgers.
Dominica still exporting agricultural items? If so, to whom?
Justwanttoknow, April fools Day is next month, you are exactly one month to early. My God help us these people getting worse by the day 🤣😂
Hello DNO where is my comment I posted since yesterday morning.

And Skeritt is not ashamed of saying 5+5=1000. And he it was, who was managing our money. In Skeritt’s mind money is money, regardless of how that money was generated. 85% of these new vehicles on our streets were bought with dirty money. 55% of money sent to Haiti was generated from vendors selling stolen products like fruits, veggies, yams and so forth. Many land owners have stopped planting because their crops are often stolen by thieves who in turn sell to street vendors and at the Roseau market. There is this fellow who sells jelly coco every day on the street but he doesn’t own one inch of land. So we have ill gotten money going through western union and money gram.
if dominica had so many jobs avaiable why are there still so many peope young people unemployed🤦🏻♀️i kno people ageable ppl that dont work but still find ways and means to send money for their child or children overs…now hatians are not dominicans but yet still dey r all employed dey r the ones sending all the money hati for their families everyday god make day moneygram doe have space for us dominicans dat is wat alu hv to annalyze n dey dont go thru so much as us to send wat dey sending just like dem chinese to
I wrote two comments on the matter, nevertheless the more that man talk it’s the more obvious his lies become!
“The record shows that just Haitian nationals sent out 22 million dollars in 2020 via money gram and western union,” he stated.”
Roosevelt $22,000,000.00 / 12 = $1,833,338.33 per month, Roosevelt you are a damn liar! You are making yourself a fool to try to impress that on people! You have forgotten that the minimum wage in Dominica is less than EC$5.00 per hour, which is approximately US$1.85. So, with the mathematical calculation above which cannot be manipulated, tell the nation in what field of employment are these Haitians employed to be so highly paid!
If you are correct; not a damn liar; unless these people are into something illegal that can’t happen, when some civil servants work for less than a thousand dollars per month.
How many resident Haitians are there in Dominica, tell me and give me the average pay of each one, let me prove you a bigger…
$214,772,689.41 divided by 12 months =17897724.1175 dollars per month
$17897724.1175 divided by 30 days = 596590.803916666666667 dollars per day
$596590.803916666666667 divided by 8 hours = $74573.850489583333333 dollars per hour
Can someone tell us how many Haitians is on Dominica to be sending that amount of Loot every hour???
Simple mathematics MyPeople Simple Maths please correct Rastarmarn because remember is Zeb alone RastarMarn know to deal wiff yeh!!!
Somebody need to check Skerrit speech before dey send him out there to talk to people!!!
For a Feller dat supposedly have Ductor-8 he sure sounds like a nincompoop every time he trying to make people believe he got his paper the official way yeh!!!
Garçan for a man dat checking Zeb only Rastar gonna look at them numbers and see dat whomever is sending those kindda money out of my Country should be dealt with accordingly,,,
Garçan dat is moneys dat suppose to stay in country to boost the economy, why is all dem people dere sending all dat money out???
Dats a clear indication dat the proper income tax mechanism is not working right!!!
And how anyone can use dat as an indication when is only construction workers people seeing doing anything on Dominica, Oh wait apart from those NEP people working the side of the road cleaning Grass up and down!!!
So Skerrow answer dis: “what is the average income of someone on a pension program and how many Dominicans you can say is registered to get an sustainable stipend when they cannot work no more”???
A good amount of it was drug & prostitution money.
Something does not seem right here, DNO. In his 2022/23 budget presentation, the PM said the treasury raised $348 million in tax revenue and $475 million in non-tax revenue, virtually all of which came from the sale of passports. So where do people get nearly $215 million to send out in remittances? That’s two-thirds of the tax revenue collected and nearly have the amount collected from passport sales. In your story, you quoted some from one institution saying every week Haitians repatriate $100,000. That’s $5,200,000 a year. Which company in Dominica hires enough Haitians who can send home over $5 million a year? And, at this rate, it takes 41 companies to reach $215 million. Whichever way you look at it, the numbers simply don’t add up. So where is this money coming from> Enquiring minds want to know.
What kind of leader would use such a statement as public proof that the economy is doing well? I’ve never been able to figure out why UWP idolized the PM. He lacks both intelligence and vision. He knows your name and can shake your hand, but he isn’t known for building a strong economy.
I love it when Dr Pm Skerrit, gives his dogs bones to chew on my life these Rottweilers do love a good chew 🦴 please Sir could you give the Dogs more bones they’re hungry.
Roosevelt, one of the most dangerous thing in life is for a man or someone to lie and believe their own lie!
“Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has referenced the $214,772,689.41”
Roosevelt you made that claim in the past, and how Haitians sends home one hundred thousand dollars per week: In simple arithmetic, that would mean sending approximately $14, 285.71 per day: X 365 that would mean $742,856.924 per year. My question to you Roosevelt in what form of employment these Haitians are engage?
If one imports everything consumed in the country, there is a probability that the two hundred plus million you talk about could be true, but for one who knows about tariffs and shipping, I think most manufactures would prefer to have their money through a banking system rather than via moneygran and Western Union.
By the way who are the employers of these Haitians, and not Dominicans born?
The reason I can say you lie is because the amount you claimed has not varied for about four years.
Mr PM this money does not justify the low salaries here in this island and lack of good quality jobs.
Open back western union and money gram in the country side !
lmaoo! it means the0m haitian can live on rive and ketchup and mackerel. All the money going back to Haiti. YOu even had haitian working on your house in morne Daniel, you would know. I hear NEP finish, lets see what the unemployment rate looking like
When you give away free homes, free transportation, free Kool Out, you entice this outcome that you lamented. This is the result of a Labor Party policy that disenfranchises hard work, sacrifice and the willingness to take risk for growth. After some twenty-two years in office plus the reset, we continue to lag our neighbors in critical areas that will foster the growth and development of our nation, while providing gainful opportunities for both the present and future generations. Too late shall be your cry.
He should have provided the top 4 countries and the amount they are receiving via the Money transfer services from Dominica….Because the DEVIL is in the Details.
Don’t be surprise the US is going to have Western Union and MoneyGram under more scrutinity because a small nation like DA with almost a DEAD economy to move this volumes of money via these transfer services is a RED FLAG. This smell like Money Laundering. Question…Is the PM aware and trying to make it look like Economic Activities? Is it a known factor that VAT and TAX collection is low….connect the DOTS!!
The FIU need to get off their BUTT and start investigating!!!!
Hello and good afternoon my people. Well our Prime Minister is crowing that all this money is leaving Dominica and going to Haiti. This money isn’t being used to develop DA so why don’t he put a maximum amount that could be sent out of the country over a period of months in that way some can be used to develop Dominica. The Prime Minister is also the Finance Minister this article would indicate to me that he knows nothing about finance. Any accountant could see the problem with this article and the PM statement.
Nonesense skerrot nonsense nononsense i said nonsense smh
All that money send and received is thanks to the Haitian and Dominican Republic nationals no one else. So Skerrit hush your lying mouth with your availability of jobs on island.
Truth Be Told – Very good observations/points.
This statement about $214M was posited by Roosevelt to make the headlines in the local and regional Press, just he planned it. Here it is on DNO. There is an absolute certainty that DBS, Kairi and the other copycat, servile, local media entities fall inline.
Has any of these news houses made any attempt to verify those numbers? We all know that information from Roosevelt has to be verified before you believe what emanates from his mouth even ‘is’ and ‘the’.
This specific statistic spouted by Lying Roosevelt is of no moment. Even, IF true, this repatriated sum of money from the favoured Chinese, Arabs and other foreign ‘oligarchs’ has no relevance with the health of the local economy. Roosevelt’s attempt to wow and mislead the citizenry should be rebuffed.
so Haitian sending and is jobs we locals have ? stupes .. hate nonsense .. the Haitian doing all kind of madness to send out .. which jobs it have . if it had jobs then it would be locals making up the half going overseas .. .. a Dominican always by western union receiving money .. the Haitian sending cause they have family to support obviously
100% right
Thanks
Particularly in the construction and agriculture field.I listened to the hypocrite media whore,he never mentioned agriculture. It is a fact that Dominicans have given their lands to Haitians and travelled overseas, only to end up unemployed,on drugs and in prison.Everyone of us who have lived and worked in a foreign land, know Dominica biggest problem is laziness and I doe care attitude.Projects that would take 6 months and $500,000,would take a Dominican two years and $2,000,000.I know because I worked in the USA and built a house in Dominica.Dominicans are buying agricultural produce from Haitians grown on Dominican land.Dominican workers are always involved in a SHORT-CUT,jealously,reap off and greed. In all my travels, which is a lot,I can safely say Dominica has the most beautiful women, but the laziest men in the Caribbean. That is why foreigners are welcomed to work in Dominica.
Man GTFOH with your rubbish. You are here giving on Dominicans about being lazy, what you and many others fail to accept and understand is that, what a Dominican earned 10-15 years ago, they refused to work for it today and with good reasons since the cost of living has gone up, maybe by a 3 figure percentage. For a Haitian national, working for $60.00 a day is welcomed and acceptable because he would earn far less in Haiti, IF he could find a job. A Dominican on the other hand, would have done the same job, say 5 years ago for $75., so Haitians for less pay, and that has little to do with Dominicans not wanting to work.
Your precious diaspora is always said to be contributing a lot in remittances. It would be good report that figure too.
Also, the amount sent out should be analyzed further such as who sends out, to what countries, the amounts. This could also be a very good anti money laundering tool as well. Perhaps the “umemployed” are always sending out funds? The Haitians send out a lot and that needs further analysis.
This broad statement by a man who is a master of hyperbole should be considered with great skepticism.
If Roosevelt wants the public to be!I’ve him, he should present some form of documentary proof. Be transparent for once show the evidence, as your record shows you have a antithetical relationship with the truth.
Roosevelt thinks he is talking to his gullible, diehard patrons who just swallow his cooked up rhetoric without masticating it.
Skerrit, you are talking utter rubbish as usual. You as the head of government have no other measure regarding jobs in DA than remittances sent out of Dominica through MoneyGram and Western Union?? Is that it? May I suggest to you that this figure is much too high for it to originate from lawful employment. However, it is quite possible that the vast amount of money originates from unlawful employment, drugs trade and dare I mention it MONEY LAUNDERING. So here we have it. What say you now? Not one of journalists dared to ask this question?
Mr. Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit did money laundering and drug and people trafficking ever cross your mind? Money moving through Dominica but not made in Dominica ever occured to you? Dirty money washed and cleaned in Dominica!?
This may actually be an indication that Dominica has become a haven for money laundering by a certain group of people. Hundreds of millions of dollars moving out of Dominica via Western Union and other means does not mean that the money was made in Dominica. You do not have to prove where you get money from to send money out. It is your government tax revenue that should tell us how productive we are and the increase or decrease in employment. Release the year on year government tax collection; sales tax, income tax, corporation tax, customs duties, VAT?
I could bring 10 million dollars into Dominica via the BACKDOOR and send it out via the Western Union frontdoot to clean it! PM your points are always childish rubish! Talk economics!
@Truth Be Told
Your first two questions came immediately to mind after hearing this frivolous attempt from Lying Roosevelt to deceive the unsuspecting members of the public.
The local media entities just publish his statements verbatim without surgically dissecting and critically analysing these statements for fallibility.
The man keeps on issuing lies as he knows the local media will never challenge his veracity on any issue. That’s the reason I will always repeat that the local media houses have assisted Roosevelt, advertently or inadvertently, to diminish democracy in Dominica.
When all you dominicans follow up western union or moneygram lines go receives money, where that money coming from? I pretty sure it is all family that hustle in foreign countries to assist u in Dominica. It’s the same case for Haitians nationals that hustle to get something to send as well to assist our families. Stop been unfair.
Look Dominica is behind the times, so far no one knows how things operate in Dominica besides Roosevelt.
When my sister was alive and sick there is a young lady in the village who volunteered to help look after her; for her kindness, every other month I would send her money to take care of my sister, and some for herself amounting to a little over two thousand dollars.
One month I went to moneygram to wire the money to the lady only to find out she was blocked from receiving money via Western Union and Moneygram respectfully.
The way we overcome that; she gave me the name of her friend to whom I wired the money to collect for her.
If we are dealing with the same entities as named in America in Dominica, the rules should be the same, so all this money leaving the country weekly according to Roosevelt could not because these entities would be obligated to restrict the regular people sending all this money out of the country.
Roosevelt lie!
