Minister for Housing and Urban Development Melissa Poponne-Skerrit has revealed that close to $2 million was allocated to the Salisbury Constituency to assist in housing, she was speaking at the end of year press conference on Monday.
She was responding to statements made by Parliamentary Representative of the Salisbury Constituency, Jesma Paul-Victor during parliament recently.
Paul-Victor argued that her constituency has not benefited from the government’s housing project.
She said the government has allocated millions in capital spending to the Ministry of Housing with the intention of constructing new homes, yet despite the substantial allocation of funds approved by this very parliament none was spent in her constituency.
According to Victor, 8 years after Hurricane Maria families in the Salisbury Constituency, “that is Coulibistrie to be exact”, continue to live in deteriorating structures, partially repaired houses and temporary arrangements which were meant to be short-term.
However, in dismissing that statement, Poponne-Skerrit who was responding to reporters at the recently held press conference said the fact that the Salisbury Constituency is an opposition seat doesn’t mean that it has been abandoned.
“Housing is a right and it is for everyone across Dominica. And we have made significant interventions in terms of financing I believe close to 2 million-[dollars] was allocated to that constituency and it was distributed through the local village council,” she said.
Poponne-Skerrit continued, “As far as I can remember there’s just less than 5 households which we have to facilitate and this will address this in 2026, but quite a bit of interventions have been made throughout this area facilitating all those who require assistance.”
Furthermore, she revealed that a number of these constituents were carded for relocation, but during this time many of them opted for land opportunities which the government has facilitated in selling government land to reduced price,” she explained. “So a number of them have purchased land from the government and built their own homes.”
Poponne-Skerrit added, “A few of them moved to different areas, while some migrated and we have facilitated quite a few people financially in building back some of their homes, fixing their current homes.”
dem talk have no real value on de ground
nice talk to show off
de voters better not make dat kinda talk fool dem………..early campaign
Oh, the value of this talk is already felt by those who will be drinking their sorrel and eating babawoolay in their new resilient house, thanks to the taxpayers of Dominica and Skerrit, instead of sitting in a 2 X 4 shack with a leaky roof and plastic sheeting for windows. The voters already know the value of this talk; they live it each day.
Dumb you are not Dumb your are just an ignorant JACKA,the reason UWP cannot win an election. You say our population is shrinking but when UWP was in power there was no Clear harbor, there was no NEP,no Yes We Care, nobody was getting $300 monthly, there were no free houses. The police, teachers, nurses and fire service were smaller under UWP.There were no school bus service no free school books and no free school uniforms. There are more vehicles in Dominica than when UWP was in power, more people are building and building bigger and better houses.Skerrit have caused over 15,000 to be better of financially. One question, what were ALL the above mentioned people doing under UWP?If money was meeting money under UWP,everybody had money, life was good, the monthly was $5,000,people had mansions. If things were so good why did the people kick out UWP after only 4 1/2 years?UWP was kicked out because of corruption, victimization, lies and GREEEED.Anybody who support UWP is corrupt and dogish,an a hole.
LP wha go Bossman.
You seem to be off your medication again and hanging at the lab my brodda! Remove the red glass, suit and shoes. I prefer the independent LP that sees Dca first, not party. Merry Christmas bro and make sure Poopooyou and Ass-Kanee give you the ham and turkey for being a mouthpiece every now and then. Nuff love
