[Press Release] UK introduction of visa requirement for Dominican nationals visiting UK

The UK government has announced today (Wednesday 19 July) that, with immediate effect,  all Dominican nationals will require a visa before travelling to the UK, including to visit.

The changes, which come into effect immediately, will apply to all Dominican nationals seeking to enter the UK. However, there will be a four-week transition period until 15:00 BST 16 August. During this window, only visitors who booked their travel before 15:00 BST 19 July, will still be able to enter the UK without a visa.

The decision to bring in a visa regime on Dominica is in response to concerns relating to its Citizenship by Investment (CBI) scheme. Visit visas are an important tool in reducing illegal migration, tackling organised crime and protecting national security, and this decision has been made to ensure that the visa system continues to operate as effectively as possible.

Acting British High Commissioner to Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, Antigua & Barbuda, St Vincent & the Grenadines, St Lucia and St Christopher & Nevis, Charley Williams, said:

“The UK and Dominica enjoy a close relationship and our governments work together on a range of international issues. The UK is proud of the important role we have played in Dominica’s ongoing recovery from Hurricane Maria, including through the United Kingdom Caribbean Investment Fund and Climate Resilience Execution Agency Dominica.”

“Today’s announcement is a response to our long-standing concerns about Dominica’s Citizenship By Investment programme and the risk it poses to the UK. The changes will bring Dominica in line with many other visa national countries around the world with which the UK has strong and friendly relations. They do not change our commitment to the relationship between our countries or to Dominica’s future. Visas provide access to the UK while helping to secure the UK border.”

Visa applications are submitted and paid for online at VFS Global, after which applicants book an appointment to provide their biometrics and hand over their passport.  The UK Government aims to process applications within 15 UK working days of receipt of the passport and biometrics. Applicants can apply up to three months in advance of travel.

A temporary UK Visa Application Centre where travellers can submit their passports and provide biometrics will operate regularly in Dominica. The first session is scheduled to run at  Fort Young Hotel, Victoria Street, P.O. Box 519, Rosseau Dominica on 26 and 27 July, 1, 2, 8 and 9 August, depending on demand, with the aim of allowing applicants to receive their visas before the end of the transition period on 16 August, and with further sessions planned.

The cost of a six-month multiple entry visa for the UK can be found at:  Visa fees – GOV.UK (www.gov.uk). Longer validity visas are also available.

Dominican nationals who booked travel to the UK before 15:00 BST 19 July will still be able to enter the UK without a visa until 15:00 BST 16 August. Any passengers arriving after 15:00 BST 16 August will require a visa to enter the UK regardless of when their travel was booked.  Anyone booking their flight after 15:00 BST 19 July will also need a visa, even if they arrive before 15:00 BST 16 August.

Dominican visitors already in the UK will not be affected by the new requirement for the remainder of their visit, but once they leave the UK, they will need a visa in order to enter the UK again.

In line with standard UK practice around the world, the British High Commission in Bridgetown will not be able to issue visas, receive applications or provide advice on individual needs or applications.  Those needing advice should check GOV.UK for guidance. Find a visa application centre – GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

Every body still remember H.H King Charles III coronation. The king of the United Kingdom and the common wealth . No free movements means nothing in common. U.K is losing the common wealth . Is this the curse of Mahatma Gandhi and his followers over the faite of the U.K or revenge or racism!? Visitors come to the U.K. under a valid passport , means an identified person (even by birth or investment passports) . how pre-Identified visitors can be a security concern ? And Border control can not stop such concerned individual visitors and instead thousands of visitors are banned!! Is there some one Joking with the ability ,Integrity and Unity of the United Kingdom and the common wealth ??? !!
It was said that this decision was not made over night .May be the whole plan was under discussion since 15 August 1947.
From the bottom our heart , What ever happens ,we respect and looking forward to the decisions made by our king Charles III.

This is a gut punch. Although I am not a fan of selling passports the honest truth is passport sales and the associated monies has lead to some development in my country. Oh how I long for the time (maybe not in my lifetime) that our nation will have a robust economy that we can support our needs from organic activities within the country and not foolishness of having to sell passports.

First on the list is Dominica; I wonder if the British added the rest of the islands including St. Vincent which is not in the business if selling passports.

The issuance of entry visa will give the British the opportunity to identify the true native Dominican, from the fake, ones who buys Dominica passports as a convenient
to enter Europe, and North America.
Unless the sale of the nation passport comes to a halt, there will come a time when crooks and honest Dominicans wanting to enter England, and other parts of the world will be declared “persona non grata.”

There are people who have bought Dominica passports to accommodate their illegal activities; as such the British may have found a way to keep them out of England.
The idea is that applying for an entry visa; there is no guarantee it will be granted!

That’s another feather in the triple doctor Roosevelt Skerrit hat,

His stupidity seems t have caused other islands in the Caribbean to suffer Dominica’s fate!

Hello mini-star of everything, just checking up on you to see how you slept last night. You must have slept like a little baby because “Dominica hands are clean” well boy, recently a few Brits came down to pick your weak brain and they left with the impression that you aren’t a smart man; just a wise guy. So they returned to London to put some guardrails in place and here you have it. Your female high priest once said that “Dominicans will suck salt.” Look now the British just added some Pima ma Jack to the rock salt. You are King Demolition. We will clean up after you when you are gone or run. Dominica is a beautiful place. But CARICOM????? O my.

The double doctorate dude is as dumb as an ox because he couldn’t understand that his actions were compromising the security apparatus of the US and it’s allies even when Steve Croft of CBS told him so on the 60 minutes program. Now the Dominican passport will lose it’s Lustre and not be as demanded as it was. The Baronmess told us to suck salt but whose going to suck salt? and she couldn’t do a damn thing to prevent it. I’m waiting to hear the spin doctors take on the mess that we are in as a country.
Skerritt kept accusing the opposition of attempting to sabotage the CBI but the proof is out now that it’s his short sighted policy actions which has sabotaged it. When you point one finger three others point back at you. Got it, double doctorate dude? It’s a good thing not many Dominicans continue to glorify Skerritt with the title of doctor. He bit the hand that fed Dominicans, what a crab.

We require visas to go to the US and no one complains about it. When no visa requirement is a blessing, larger countries always use different means to prevent small countries from prospering. The US has one of the largest of not the largest Cotizenship by investment programs in the world and yet it has raised concerns over the programs in the Caribbean. So you all think that the UK itself does not and has not on multiple occasion granted citizenship to persons convicted of crimes? The information is there and easy to find.

Yes, we need to do due diligence before granting citizenship, but don’t allow this decision to be the reason we view the program as bad. We should be much wiser than this.

The government of Dominica was warned. They were told to get their house in order and they didn’t. Now the people of Dominica will have to go and get a visa to come to England. The selling of passports must stop. The EU has given all countries who sell passports until 2025 to end all sale of passports. The EU will be next then Dominica’s passport will not be worth anything. It’s the poor people I feel for that have family here in England as these rich people only got the passport to avoid paying taxes in their home country and also to travel freely. UK immigration officers are now asking how you get a Caribbean passport when you enter the country. There is no going back from this, the current UK government in office is not easy and they will not go back from this. Once they have placed a visa on you that stays for years. 1 down and many more neighbouring islands will be next.

This announcements brought sadness to me, and my family, we have invested in Dominica, and we have been traveling to the UK and all of Europe, we kept our investments in Dominica we loved Dominica, because it gave us freedom of movement, we have visited Dominica twice we loved the country we even planned for bigger projects, such as commercial aviation and train system, but this sad announcements changed a lot of things. I hope Prime Minister and other ministers, such as foreign affairs minister would go to the UK and convince them otherwise.

Your comment is not fully correct. The UK does not have massive unemployment. We have over 1.2 million jobs. The problem we have is a good welfare system that many people refuse to work as in their mind It’s better to stay home and not work. I love working. Also the entire world has a massive cost of living. You are correct we are spending billions on a war and not helping our people. However this has nothing to do with Dominica now needing a visa to come to England. Your government was warned and they did not listen. The UK did not just decide to stop visa waiver with Dominica they were told to get your house in order to stop selling passports to criminals. What will you say when the EU stops next? Then that passport will be worth nothing to those rich people. Not sure if you know this the EU has given all countries who sell passports until 2025 to stop otherwise the visa waiver will end.

The angle the you have taken is quite unfortunate as you have gone straight pass the real issue. We all know the real issue is lack of checks and balances in our CBI program. The large number of agents who operate almost with impunity. We all know of the agents who are filthy rich and buying out all real estate in their area while another man has no shelter or even a meal. This is the problem and it’s exacerbated by their willingness to sell to anyone with the cash because of their greed. We need to fix this before it gets worst for our citizens. What are we waiting for Dominica?

Their internal problems have nothing to do with them STRIPPING our free movement benefit of being a commonwealth state member. You idiot. For example; If a man giving you a free ride every morning for decades, and he tell you from today each ride is 100 pounds sterling because he has warned you about the nonsense that you have been doing for some time and how it affects him and the operation of his vehicle, this will be your response? the driver have all his problems in his home? then go on to talk about his wife and children? He isnt charging you because of his supposed issues at home. he is charging you because of YOU and what YOU have been doing and how it affects his vibes. So no more free ride because you have been warned repeatedly. But you are free to try and get ride from anybody else and say what you want about the man that used to give you free ride, because your mouth is yours, just know you will pay if you want to hop that man ride again.

Dominica is considered a pariah country because of the corruption, ineptitude and elitism of one despotic man and his demolition government. This action by the UK would reverberate around the world and Dominicans traveling for business or leisure to other countries will have a torrid time of their lives.

Why is Dominica the last in any thing good and first in all things bad. Other countries in the OECS have CBI schemes. However, it is only Dominica, at present, that has visa requirements imposed on her.

Much more is coming down the pipeline. The debt crisis is intensifying; inflation is ballooning; unemployment is skyrocketing; homelessness is mushrooming; NCDs are increasing; food insecurity is growing.

The reality is that once Roosevelt and his spineless parasites remain in office Dominicans will become stateless.

No because only the DLP and its leader PAYS all you to make your choice. But you continue to argue that elections in DA are fair. You are a sad creature!

Today’s announcement is a response to our long-standing concerns about Dominica’s Citizenship By Investment programme and the risk it poses to the UK. The changes will bring Dominica in line with many other visa national countries around the world with which the UK has strong and friendly relations. They do not change our commitment to the relationship between our countries or to Dominica’s future. Visas provide access to the UK while helping to secure the UK border.”

I just knew it. the UK has been telling Dominica to restrict selling passports to countries like Russia, Syria, Iran, Iraq but Dominican agents are only interested in making money so they still process the requests and give the people the passports. The people run into problems when they reach the UK, usually because of their point of origin and i think their original nationality is also on the new passport. Long and short, all those people that should have not been given passports has affected us in this way.

All now Skerrit in Brussels boasting about our CBI program, meanwhile our program is HURTING the natural born Dominicans who would like to take advantage of being part of the Commonwealth states. Skerrit you and your CBI friends are doing absolute nonsense and once more embarrassing Dominica. You are a diplomat you dont need visa, but i do these days. Nonsense. Ill travel through France is ok.

Wow, not unexpected though. A good thing I did not spend money again to renew my Dominican passport but also very, very sad that the U.K. thinks our CBI scheme is a threat to their security and that is not an overnight decision either. The press release does not mention the E.U. but I suspect they will follow the U.K. What now Roosevelt? You made your money and have a diplomatic passport but ordinary Dominicans are snookered. You overplayed it, didn’t you!

When will Dominicans wake up and realize that we need to hold the Government accountable for the clear and obvious mismanagement of the country’s affairs? The handouts won’t and CANNOT last forever. This has to come to an end, we’ve allowed this Prime Minister to enrich himself and neglect the wellbeing of the country and it’s citizens. My people – it does not matter which party you support! It is time to get our country back on track! The journey will be long and hard but we need to start somewhere and the first point of duty would be to get Roosevelt Skerrit out of office!! There is no two ways about it. If we fail to act soon, it is evident that Dominica will become a blacklisted country and things will become even harder than it already is now!

The wall is starting to crumble. What is Skerrit’s plan B when our passport is no longer an asset to those seeking a second citizenship?

But then again, Skerrit has made sure he has amassed a large sum of money and will not have to worry about his livelihood when he leaves office.

@Zandoli, remember that Roosevelt and Melissa have their US passports. Skerritt even brought it up in regards to getting health care overseas, when he said he can take his family to the US and other countries overseas to get them much needed care unavailable in Dominica and the region.

Oh my goodness. The greed and blindness of our governments will be the end of us.

“Today’s announcement is a response to our long-standing concerns about Dominica’s Citizenship By Investment programme and the risk it poses to the UK.”

How stupid can we be? How can we be so blind? Are we on the way to becoming a pariah state? First Canada now the UK.

There is none so blind as those who refuse to see.
