Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Dominica Water and Sewerage Company (DOWASCO), Kimani St Jean urges the public to store sufficient water in light of the impending weather system.
She asserted that sufficient preparations should take place ahead of the hurricane season.
“We want to remind our customers to always store water,” St Jean advised. “Have water stored for emergency use and the standard is 1 gallon of water per person in your household per day for up to 3 days.”
Furthermore, she explained that DOWASCO’s continuity plan has been activated.
“And part of that plan involves that 2 to 3 hours before a pending storm we are shutting down our system and that is to ensure not only that we keep the water we have in storage or the water that we will continue to provide to our customers are cleaned and treated, but the timeline is also important for our caretakers and even for our employees who will be going to the various water systems to actually do the shutting down of our systems,” St Jean explained.
She continued, “And so we have activated the plan and right now what we would really like to advise our customers is to be prepared for Tropical Storm Bret.”
Meanwhile, St Jean reminded customers in Dominica that DOWASCO provides surface water, “and turbidity is something that we really cannot get away from when there is heavy rainfall and flash flooding.”
She said DOWASCO has no choice but to shut down the water system to preserve what it has in storage and also to be able to supply after the storm has passed and the water is cleared.
