Mas Camp finale and Carnival Queen Pageant fall on same night

Two popular events are scheduled to take place on the same day this carnival season; the Show Down Mas Camp Finale (Champ of the Camp) and the Carnival Queen Show.

The Carnival Queen Show is normally held on a Friday, however, this year organizers made a decision to host the Queen Show on Thursday the 20th to accommodate a new event dubbed ‘SunRise’.

This decision did not go down well with the organizers of the Champ of the Camp.

In fact, the head of the Showdown Mas Camp, Dr. Valda Henry, is expressing disappointment.

“It is rather unfortunate that DFC would make that decision and to move the queen show to the Thursday, but it is what it is and we just have to move along with what we have,” Henry told Dominica News Online (DNO).

Dr Henry said the Champ of the Camp will remain on Thursday.

She said there was a suggestion to move Champ of the Camp to Friday, but DFC also has an event on the same evening.

“We want to make sure that the event does not clash with the queen show that used to be on that Friday and it worked out well because it helped protect the voices of our finalists,” she explained.

She said also that’s the week when there are a lot of people from the diaspora who are visiting.

“You know when diasporans (Dominicans living overseas) come they come to have a good time and they come for fun, and so they go to all everything [the events],” Henry said.

Henry is of the view that the SunRise event could have been hosted after the National Queen Show since the queen show is normally over by 11:00pm.

According to Dr. Henry, due to the change in schedule, the Champ of the Camp will serve as an “after party” for the Carnival Queen Show as she expects patrons to come over from the Queen show when it is done.

Champ of the Camp will be staged from 9 pm at the Five Star Bar and Grill in Jimmit.

I’m not interested in carnival and any of its activities; but from the comments I read on here, there’s lots of unlearnt ignorance in that slave plantation mentality island!!! Anyone interested in good governance and management will never allow an event to clash with an already established one!!!

Stop buying into the divide and rule mantra. The world does not revolve around Mas Camp but they play a invaluable role in Dominica’s carnival experience. You may not neccessarily like their songs but that does not take away from the fact they make a contribution. What are u doing? I hope u are contributing. Just in case here’s a short list of how u too can make a difference; Join a band , write a calypso, judge a show, give constructive advice to improve upcoming calypsonians among others) instead of sitting on your couch sprouting nonsense.

It’s unfortunate DFC would choose to move the Queen show to conflict with the schedule that they knew Mas Camp had well in advance. And for a new event at that. So this new event is so powerful that it could upend the Queen Show long established scheduled. Both events are part of the run up of activities to the carnival. Their goal I would believe is to have an overall successful season so why undermine one for the other? Sad and disappointed. I smell a very rotten fish at play.

Give me a break! Does the World revolve around Mass Camp? We need choices Mam. Some of us don’t go to Mass Camp, just like some don’t like going to pageants. Try working on marketing your Show so it can attract people, otherwise, stop sounding like a dictator!

@DC you should take some time to analyze the situation before commenting. Staging two great show on :-P the same night causes a conflict for people who would want to attend both shows, yes there are people who do not care about Mas Camp and vice versa while there are people who care about both. Why create a situation which forces people to choose which one to attend, at the end of the day both events are trying to attract the same patrons. Better planning needs to be done in other to have a successful event.

    1. The queen show doesn’t finish at 11pm, it’s more 1am

    2. The queen show crowd is not the mass camp crowd and the mass camp crowd is not the queen show crowd so who going to queen show was never going to mass camp anyway

That’s not true. I am a both shows crowd but with everything in life is decisions/choices. I will decide which one to go to nearer the date. And if they could end queen show early I would definitely go to mas camp for a lil bump after.

Really guys, how can the Carnival Committee make such a bad decision like that. Queen show is one of the highlights of Carnival, when we ladies look to dress to empress to go show not you have it a Thursday and with the show down.. realllyyyyy :-| :-| :-| :-|

    • February 6, 2020

Do you know what you are talking about? Queen show is not set up to take place with Mas Camp.

Many persons are not interested in dressing up to go queen show..sorry to burst your bubble. The same for Mas Camp – not everyone wants to go. There may be a few who would like to do both but I can assure you that this is not the case with the majority of persons.
