Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has told the Kalinago people that the nomination of Mrs. Sylvanie Burton to serve as President of Dominica must serve as a motivation for all.
His comment came while addressing the opening ceremony of the Kalinago Economic Summit held at the Salybia Kalinago Barana Aute on Wednesday.
The activity formed part of Kalinago Week observed from September 16- 23.
“I do not want us to underestimate and undervalue the identification of a Kalinago person and a woman at that to hold the highest office in our country,” he said. “This must serve as a motivation for all of us, not only the Kalinago Territory, but all of us.”
He continued, “This is an exciting time for indigenous people across the world that an indigenous person in Dominica will be recognized and identified as our head of state.”
According to the Prime Minister, he has submitted to the Speaker of the House all documents as required by the constitution to formalize the candidacy and nomination of Mrs. Burton as the Presidential nominee for Dominica.
“Once the Lord gives us life, we will be in Parliament on the 27th of September to elect the President of Dominica.”
“This is an opportune time for us to build from what we have achieved and we are achieving, and how do we achieve more? How do we take advantage of what we have to a greater benefit?”
As previously announced, Mrs. Burton, 58, from Salybia, Kalinago Territory has served as permanent secretary in various ministries since 2014. She has served as Permanent Secretary in the Ministries of Community Development, Foreign Affairs, Trade, Youth and Social Services, and holds a current position as Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Environment, Rural Modernization, Kalinago Upliftment, and Constituency Empowerment.
She also previously served as a development officer in the Ministry of Kalinago Affairs and held the position of District Development Officer (DDO) for an extended period.
The mother of two brings 25 years of experience as a Justice of the Peace and has dedicated over two decades as a lay associate in the Roman Catholic Church. Mrs. Burton’s educational background includes a master’s degree in Project Management and a bachelor’s degree in Rural Development.

This is typical Roosevelt. The man has painted the most beauteous picture of the future of Dominica for the last nineteen years, but in reality, resident Dominicans are forced to endure deprivation and austerity under his guardianship.
This statement to the Kalinago people about ‘exciting time’ ahead is unrealistic. With massive unemployment, unlivable wages, diminishing agriculture productivity, frequent electricity outages, increasing political polarization, the future looks dire.
