A St. Lucian man, Shakur Ward is now on remand at the Dominica State Prison awaiting a surety in order to secure his release.
The 25-year-old who resides at River Street Roseau appeared before the court charged with theft.
It is alleged that on May 20, 2023, at Melville Battery, Kingshill, Ward stole 12,480 clipper cigarette lighters valued at $44,200.00 belonging to Daryl Bapaume.
Due to the quantity allegedly stolen, the matter is indictable and expected to be tried at the High Court, hence the accused was not required to enter a plea.
Unrepresented at his court hearing, Ward pleaded with presiding Magistrate Michael Laudat to grant him bail.
He told the court that he recently gained employment and wants to be “self-sufficient.”
“I want to work and develop myself to become a better person. If you grant me bail, I will never commit another crime ever again,” he pleaded.
Police prosecutor, Inspector Francis Laville did not object to bail but advised the court should it be granted, it must be done with a suitable surety and conditions attached.
Magistrate Laudat set the bail sum at $45,000.00 with a proper surety which Ward was unable to present to the court.
The matter was adjourned to October 10, 2023.
Keep him remanded. Flight risk. Them man doesnt learn.
