St. Mary’s Academy (SMA) and Orion Academy progress to next round in debate competition

St. Mary’s Academy (SMA) and Orion Academy have won the first competition of the second round of the Inter-secondary Schools DEBATING COMPETITION.

On Wednesday four schools took part in the debate. Wesley High School took on Orion Academy and Isaiah Thomas Secondary (ITSS) took on St. Mary’s Academy (SMA).

The topic for both debates was: The rights afforded to prisoners are sufficient in light of the purpose of punishment.

At the Dominica Public Service Union, Tarina Paul and Yaazmyne Vigilante (proposing team) represented the Wesley High School and Lena Magloire and Sajjad Ahmed (opposing team) represented the Orion Academy.

Best speaker went to Lena Magloire of Orion Academy. Orion Academy received 650 points while Wesley High School obtained 504 points.

At the UWI open campus, SMA (opposing) received 672 points and ITSS (proposing) gained 624 points.

The speakers for SMA were Adrian Piper, who was awarded best speaker, and Ajaniah Casimir. Akliah Barron and Camiley Casimir represented ITSS.
