Statement from Chairman of CARICOM, Hon. Roosevelt Skerrit, on Africa-CARICOM Day, 2023

CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana – Thursday, 7 September 2023:    I am pleased to acknowledge, as Chairman of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), the watershed moment two years ago when the leaders of CARICOM and Africa agreed to designate a date to honour the fraternal and enduring bonds that unite our countries, and reflect on the significance of our emerging strategic partnership to our people.

The relationship between the Caribbean Community and the African continent has immense potential to advance priority areas of mutual interest, such as Climate Change, Development Financing, Public Health, and Reparations.

Our alliance has made remarkable progress in recent times.  Reciprocal official visits by leaders of CARICOM and Africa have further strengthened our relations.  In this regard, my fellow CARICOM Heads of Government were delighted to receive His Excellency Paul Kagame, President of the Republic of Rwanda, as a Special Guest during the Forty-Fifth Regular Meeting of the Conference in Port-of-Spain, in July. That exchange allowed us to discuss matters, including health, digitisation, transport, telecommunications, and reform of the international financial architecture, strategically important issues for the people of our Regions.

The recent opening of the AFREXIMBANK Caribbean Office in Barbados will advance efforts to develop and promote critical trade and economic relations between the Caribbean and Africa.

It is that excellent spirit of cooperation that will continue to unite the Member States of CARICOM and African countries, as we seek to assist our sister nation, Haiti, to resolve its ongoing multi-dimensional crisis.

We understand the importance of solidifying our cooperation and transforming our proposals into initiatives that contribute to the sustainable development of our countries and the welfare of our peoples. I, therefore, look forward to the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between CARICOM and the African Union Commission Secretariats.

People-to-people contact remains a primary catalyst for our ambitions to advance collaboration between the Caribbean and African nations in trade, investment, health, connectivity and other priority areas.  I am confident that our relationship will continue to flourish in the years ahead. Our Community is home to many citizens of the African Diaspora, designated as Africa’s Sixth Region. Let us continue to work together to further solidify the ties of friendship and cooperation that have traditionally bonded us.

I extend wishes for the well-being and prosperity of the Governments and People of CARICOM and Africa.

Who is the boss; Roosevelt or Chester Sambrano?

    Chester Sambrano

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) says it is deeply saddened to learn of the death and devastation in the Kingdom of Morocco from the earthquake which struck on Friday 8 September.
Over two thousand people were killed and searches are still ongoing in the rubble.
In a statement today, CARICOM said, “We extend heartfelt condolences to the government and people as the death toll continues to rise. We offer our hand of friendship and solidarity as you seek to respond and recover from this catastrophe.”

Where is the voice of the Dominica Crapo chairman Skerrit in this?

    He’s not…

In the 2019 election Austrie won by 612 votes are you saying Skerrit imported more than 612 overseas voters to vote in the Cottage constituency?
866 in Vielle Case,884 in Portsmouth,492 in Colihaut,936 in Paix Bouche,100 in Wesley,265 in Salybia,447 in St.Joseph,34 in CastleBruce,326 in Mahaut,60 in Morne Jaune,346 in Roseau Valley,193 in Roseau Central,256 in Roseau South,77 in Laplaine,691 in Petite Savanne,1,321in Grandbaby and 750 in Soufriere?Lugay won by 496 in Roseau North.Linton won by 613 in Marigot and John won by 332 in Salisbury. You the aholes supporting UWP would be lying to say no dead person voted UWP,and nobody from the diaspora voted UWP.What you UWP losers should do is find out what cause you to lose 1,163 votes in the same 2019 election you say Skerrit paid 13,000 overseas voters to go to Dominiça to vote.Recently Linton said Skerrit had PAID people to go CLAP in his favour at the consultation.Stupidity has killed the UWP. Next election Linton will be 73 too old.

That’s great we are talking. It is imperative to have those relations and I would go out of my way to forge deeper relations with the Continent. Including establishing a African Studies dept or class at all our high schools and college; the rewards will be exponential. Put money where mouth is CARICOM.

Almost everyday, the misleaders of CARICOM attend meetings all over the region and outside to show off their designer suits, their oratorical skills (not Roosevelt on this one) to mislead the gullible into thinking that something good is about to happen.

I don’t have any confidence in any fruitful relationship with most African countries like I had previously. Here is the reason.

For an African to even get a visitor’s visa to enter another African country, is more difficult than procuring a visa for the United States or Europe. It’s like trying to milk an elephant.Ponder on that.

The following was a recent News story on this medium:
“Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit Monday confirmed that the two-day retreat of Caribbean Community (CARICOM) leaders scheduled to have been held here later this month, has been postponed and a new date will be set as soon as possible….” The retreat was scheduled for August 18-19, 2023. So when will the resilient Chairman ‘as soon as possible” announce the new date for the retreat? I’m asking for a friend.
