The Opposition, United Workers Party (UWP), will have three women and one male as senators in the House of Assembly when Parliament meets for the first session (since the December 6th, 2019 general elections) on February 10th, 2020.
Section 34 (1) a of the constitution states that five senators shall be appointed by the President acting in accordance with advice from the Prime Minister and 34 (1) b states that four shall be appointed by the president acting in accordance with the advice of the Leader of the Opposition.
By letter dated January 27th, 2020 Opposition leader and party leader Lennox Linton wrote to President Charles Savarin advising him of the party’s choices as senators.
Ernie Lawrence Jno Finn who contested the Castle Bruce seat and narrowly lost is among the three women who will be senators.
Francisca Joseph who also contested and lost the La-Plaine seat was also chosen.
Another woman who was chosen is Anette Sanford who contested and lost the Kallinago Territory to Cozier Frederick of the Dominica Labour Party (DLP).
She is married to former UWP senator Claudius Sanford and is a nurse by profession.
The lone male opposition senator is Clement “Clemo” Marcellin Jr who contested and lost in the Vieille Case constituency to the incumbent Roosevelt Skerrit.
None of the senators from 2015 to 2019 have been retained, these include: Monelle Williams-Jno Baptiste, Isaac Baptiste, Felix Thomas and Ronald Charles who replaced Dr. Thomson Fontaine.
President of the party Isaac Baptiste stated that after consultation with the executive and other party officials the appointments were made and he is confident with the choices saying it is a mixture of “youth and experience in the Education sector.”
“We are looking forward to their contributions in the House of Assembly and we are confident that they will give a very good contribution,” he said.
It’s always good to try something new but honestly speaking when thieves decide to steal there is absolutely nothing you can do to stop them. Sometimes we try to change the lock or even put expensive burglar bars but while they might slow down the thief it will not stop him because thieves will even kill to get inside.
We have people that have perfected the art of Stealing and to make things worse, those that are paid to keep the thieves out are the very ones helping the thieves to break through and steal. Off course I am referring to the police, judiciary, the church, election commission, CARICOM and so on. So while I commend the UWP for bringing in new blood, I must say nothing can stop the thief, who has the master key . The man has professional thieves all over helping him to steal. Even pastors, Evangelist, priests, bishop helping the man steal, though they preach “Thou shall not steal.”

Well, thanks for this statement and observation and in a small island like Dominica we have to cautious and accounatabity for our limited resources and those in authority with the owner and access to the values of our aching Dominica must be held accountable and arrestee and charged. We make reference to the ed Clinic, the obvious abuse of states funds and the office of the Prime Ministry to deliberatey and ignorantly use the funds of our money, we the tax payers to deliberately run a this “corrupted Red Clinic”. I wish Monelle and/or Ronald could have been included also but there’s limitations on the total number of senators the UWP can appoint.
The formidable UWP machinery and its supporters MUST continue the fight and not give up.
Monelle lost two consecutive elections so she has to be replaced as the candidate for the constituency (per the party by-laws). It would be hard to make her a senator and then find someone to replace her as the candidate.
