Today is being observed as Flag Day in Dominica.
Flag Day was instituted by the Cultural Division as part of Independence Celebrations in order for the population to display and give recognition to the flag.
The flag is one of Dominica’s symbols of nationhood and national identity.
The flag we know today is the product of the recent design of November 3, 1988.
The flag consists of a circular emblem of red bearing a blue chested Sisserou Parrot standing on a twig. The parrot which must always face the flag pole, is encircled by ten lime green stars. The ten stars are outlined in yellow. This is superimposed by three vertical and three horizontal stripes of yellow, black and white forming a triple colored cross against a general background of forest green. Each symbol and color seen on the flag has a specific meaning and purpose.
The first official version of Dominica’s flag was officially revealed on November 3rd 1978 at the Government headquarters. It was designed by Alwin Bully for a flag competition held earlier that year. Whereas most flags have a maximum of four colors, Dominica’s national flag has eight which makes it more complex and expensive to produce.
Dominicans at home and abroad are encouraged to display their flags throughout the day.
Time to re design it without the parrot. We also need to change the name form Dominica to Dominique.

I will only appreciate our flag if it is changed to something different from the flag I saw those Tankers that were transporting oil to sanctioned countries flying on their Tanker to deceive the World. Boy I reside in the US and it’s a pleasure to see how Haitians fly their flags on their flag day despite their reputation. But DNO with what Skerrit has done to our country by selling our passports to crooks and criminals all over the world and by signing MOU with Syria, a close ally of Russia right in the middle of the Russian invasion of Ukraine is embarrassing. In as much as I love Dominica and would like to celebrate with my fellow citizens I must say at this time that I am very ashamed to identify myself as a Dominican just as the Prime Minister and some of his close friends are afraid to come to the US
The PM goes to the US. He just doesn’t inform the diaspora .. or nationals at home. He cannot be arrested as he has diplomatic immunity unless he is caught red handed like the gentleman from the BVI. The flag of Dominica is the only one of its kind in the world. It was designed just for Dominicans. Therefore, all Dominicans should be proud to raise and fly the national flag at every opportunity.
It gives me no pleasure to state this and it might cause some consternation. At this present time when life has become insufferable for most citizens the flag should be flown at half staff to indicate the horrible state of the economic, political, social and physical state of the country. There isn’t much to celebrate nor smile about for this 44th Anniversary of Independence.
