One of the presenters of this year’s Caribbean Music Awards, Dominican Jael Joseph ,has expressed disappointment that her country’s Bouyon music was not recognized at the awards held over the weekend
The first awards show was held at Kings Theatre in Brooklyn, New York, where it aimed to honor the region’s leading artists.
She said, “I think Bouyon music dominated Carnival. I saw Spice shaking her pampalam in Sint Maarten. That was to Bouyon music, so I want to big up all of the Bouyon artists who didn’t make it this year, and I hope they are included next year.”
There is a growing demand for the Caribbean Music Awards to showcase more diverse music genres from the region.
However, some critics argue that the event is heavily biased towards Dancehall, Reggae, and Soca.
The event only recognized one other genre, Kompa, which was awarded once for Best Kompa Band and once for a tribute to the late Haitian singer Mikaben. During the event, the host, Wyclef Jean, promised to incorporate more genres in the future.
After the show, Trinidad and Tobago’s Chutney Soca artists criticized the event for not including their genre.
The show was a notable celebration of Caribbean unity, particularly noteworthy for many in attendance.
Below is video of the event provided by Dominican youtuber Mystelics:
BOUYON IS A JOKE NOISE
Whaat? The lyrics maybe? well you doe hear de riddim yet.
You know there is something you people do not understand; just like Gordon Henderson, fantasized his patios songs is a token gift to the world; here you come with this crap talking about ‘expressed disappointment that your country’s Bouyon music was not recognized at the awards held over the weekend.’
In the first place in what form of linguistics you find the word “Bouyon?” That is patios, in Wesley when the term bouyon is used we are talking about a style of cooking derived traditionally from our slave ancestors.
What they did then was that they would mixed all the known agriculture products, along with any kind of fish, meat, of any kind in a cast iron pot.
The bananas cooking would give the liquid a very dark almost black appearance, hence they name it bouyon!
There is no shame to that but if you ever cook pig food as I did, pig food is considered Boyon, what is special about that?
Sing in English, something with international rhythm maybe you all will be heard!
What you been 🚬 smoking may be laced, it’s not weed? Did the world ever hear the word Reggae before that guy Toots Hibbert coined the term? Well, it stuck and the rest is history.
And by the way no Toots Roberts, nor any member of his sing group coined the word reggae.
Bob Marley gets more credit for Reggae than any other, but if Jimmy Cliff is the first to invent the rhythm and rendition of the music, one would expect him to be the one to name his music.
Cry as much as you wish, you can call me a dopeheady I don’t care!
But to the day every die, not a single Dominica patios song will ever make it on an international billboard, in a top 10, or 20 song.
Dominica Patios is a dialect unique only to Dominica, not found in any spectrum of any form of linguistics!
It’s unknown to the rest of the world.
Ever heard of Gahn Dong Style, all S.Korean and only known to Korea, #1 for weeks on end on Billboard?
Not to mention Bob “Jamaican Patios” Marley? Kassav already got Patios there, you’re not up to date, too late bud.
Seriously though spice wasn’t jamming to balance batty or marathon.
Dat crass garbage nasty business belong in it’s class …… some people want to promote Dominica on dat to our tourist too.
You could never hear nasty business on a tour bus in Manhattan.
What if a bad head tourist use us to get him to promote our nastiness and go back home laughing us.
Not even our leadership dat interested in cleaning it up……. they feel well represented in it…… they use it to gather and maintain support…… can you believe it? Nasty business gets promotion in parliament from de leader himself……. and his woman hard waist forcing a broken wine in it too.
All real bouyon music is drowned out by dat one beat no creativity crap…….I mean our bouyon ambassador not standing out either!!!!
Shaking your pampalam not getting us there either
No inspiration…… just drink rum!
Dat nasty business bouyon we promoting was properly treated with no recognition
Whatever point you try to make is weak because tourist want what you have to offer, not what they already have; and some of theirs can be so stupidly violent.
In my humble opinion I think that bouyon songs should be banned from our local radio station. But I understand that the “First Lady” love their music Badddddd!!!! See her pushing in and pulling out with bodyguards getting hadd. Yes I dominica.. nothing good has remained in you.
Ooops! I really should not comment on this agenda. But I saw two words which have no correlation to the other. Bouyon and Music. The sounds which I hear coming from Bouyon does a disservice to Music 🎵. Their songs are comprised with no more than two (2) chords which any 4 and 5 year old could master. Also, they don’t have volume etiquette and their “original” compositions make no sense. In my opinion, it’s only carnival jump up noise this group fits in; since the revelers don’t give a sh..@t about music. Evidently, the Bouyon group aren’t musicians.
I agree with you 100% Bouyon is only well received when it is incorporated into a Soca sound. No disrespect to my Dominican family because my great grandmother came from Dominica. There is really no genuine musical cords, just a drum beat I guess
Whilst I appreciate the diverse range of Caribbean music, it’s noticeable that Dominica’s bouyon music often emphasizes rhythm over lyrical depth. The prevalence of lewd and sexually-oriented content can overshadow the true potential of the genre. DJs and the public alike have a role to play in this. By supporting and prioritizing more lyrically-rich bouyon tracks, we can encourage upcoming artists to elevate the quality and depth of their compositions.
Not even 10% of Caribbean people can give a proper definition of Bouyon music. Craving for this music to be internationally recognised is putting the cart before the horse.
My advice to the Bouyon artists is simply this. Develop the genre to such a high level that will compel organisers of music award shows to recognise its worth. You are not entitled.
lbo, most of our people are crazy you know, sometimes I know I am damn crazy too; but most of those people think when they do their thing in patios, the whole world is dancing to that crap!
Calypso been around fo more than a hundred years, it never got hold in North America, Lord Kitchener (Aldwyn Roberts) took Calypso out of Trinidad to England, wrote Mass In The Cemetery in England in the 1950’s it was a hit, a big hit, it is still played on BBC Radio occasionally, yet it did not help take Calypso internationally.
Nevertheless, the Jamaicans whatever, songs they indulge, usually go international; I’ve heard quite a few songs that has a resemblance of calypso, but not quite, i.e Lionel Richie song “Dancing On the Sealing” is suppose to be a Calypso, but it does not carry the actual West Indian Rhythm.
Antiguan Calypsoian Obstinate said St. Lucia, And Dominica music is nothing more than a clash of thunder and lightening oui!
The very Farrakhan Muslim sang Calypso in…
So, lbo I know how dem people like to call me lie; so before they do regarding what I said about Farrakhan; here is a brief to support what I said!
LOUIS FARRAKHAN, CALYPSO CHARMER
By Richard LeiOctober 14, 1995
She knew him as “The Charmer,” and he certainly was that. A lean and handsome young man, with a hint of island breeze in his patter, he’d drop by Daisy’s desk at the neighborhood newspaper every so often with a new publicity photo, hoping to plug one of his upcoming calypso shows.
“Oh, honey, he was gorgeous,” remembers Daisy Voigt, who in those days wrote a teen column under the name Dizzy Dame Daisy. “He was as fine as new wine. We were all half in love with him. We thought he was as good as Harry Belafonte.”
It was lower Roxbury, Boston, the mid-1950s. Belafonte’s Caribbean sound was breaking big-time, but in the neighborhood, Voigt said, The Charmer held sway. Everybody also knew him as Gene Walcott, the musical pride of the West Indian immigrant community…
lbo I think I erred when I said Kitchener wrote mass in the cemetery:
Note:
“Jumbie Jamberee” is a calypso song credited to Conrad Eugene Mauge, Jr. In 1953 Lord Intruder released the song as the B-side to “Disaster With Police”. The song is also known as “Zombie Jamboree” and “Back to Back”. The introduction to the Kingston Trio’s version humorously credits “Lord Invader and his Twelve Penetrators” with authorship of the song instead of Lord Intruder.
The oldest versions of the song refer to a jumbee jamboree. Jumbies are evil spirits who were tho…
Kitchener version is the most played on the BBC
Bouyon is probably the worst genre in the entire Caribbean. It just sounds like pots & pans. As for it not being recognized, why would it? In the grand scheme of things, Bouyon is not THAT popular, Dominicans are just in a world of their own. It would’ve been nice if it was included though
Jael Joseph, yessai, make sense this time like all the other times that you make sense.. do you really think that “Bouyon” is music. It should remain what it really is and that’s a style of food that can be swallowed. That crap called music can never side with soca and reggae..
Secondly if the countries that weren’t represented would work with actual artist they would get recognized. Jamaica and Trinidad has countless “proper music” artists. Can you Name a proper music artist from the other countries… who SING, who has LISTENABLE AND MARKETABLE music????…….????? Ohh ok
Jael, as a presenter and part of the program, I wonder why you didn’t discuss that with the organizers before the show. I feel like this might have made them do something before the presentation of the awards. I wonder of one ask someone from Grenada, St. Kitts or Bahamas about Bouyon music, if they would be familiar with it.
Dominica artists must come together and make an impact song that highlights a sweet Bouyon rythm. If Machel can come to Dominica and add dancers and include our beautiful island with a Conch shell then lets get creative. Asa, Triple K and the rest can try to make an amazing impact song.
Brooklyn and many places in the USA, Canada would give plenty of support to endorse the song if it makes sense
Bouyon back in the days of wck and serenade. Was proper Bouyon. All they producing is crap these days that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever
So I not surprised that Morden garbage was not recognised
So far Bouyon is over-sexualized, one-phrased, zero-lyrical quality except the ‘Duck Walk’ album. I LOVE Bouyon Riddim and I’m quite sure it will improve but it’s not there yet, with only 2 artists, if not only one, known to anyone outside of Grandbay. Can’t expect it to happen until improved lyrically like Soca, and better known in the region. Even Punta Rock has a wider audience, don’t be so disappointed, the work has to be put in.
Great work, Jael, but let us be patient. The show will grow. Support it and give it time to expand. I am sure in time it will include the other popular genres in the region, including rhythms from the Spanish-speaking Caribbean.
DNO, please review and edit your headline on this article.
ADMIN: We appreciate your feedback. The article was updated.
@ Admin..we know you meant “didn’t recognize”..
No bouyon in the Labor day parade but allu want recognition.
SMFH
Signal Band, Asa and producers of riddims alone that deserve praise.
Most of bouyon music can’t be played on radio.
You shouldn’t be disappointed at all, because the Lyrical content of the bouyon music is uncomfortable and incompatible to the Lyrical content of the past .
You can’t just provide, music just to jump and wave and prancing up and down/it also has to be understood.
Have you ever been to a Souse and Punch at the Layou River Hotel in the 90’s you could hold your Wife and your fiance and enjoy dancing to Bouyon music.

When Bouyon was music it was not recognized, this disrespectful, nastiness garbage Bouyon you would like a recognized organization to recognized. The nonsense the young people sing disrespecting women is Bouyon. The young girls even so called public figures don’t even respect themselves.
This music is Garbage and the only place it should be recognized is I’m the dump at Stockfarm.
Real, I would give you a million likes. The audacity to be disappointed for rubbish. Reducing women to dirt. Lyrics uncomfortable to hear farless to listen.
You sound like another Gordon Henderson, young lady.
