If we want to play with words we can also say an avalanche is the sudden arrival or occurrence of something in overwhelming quantities; and that could be anything even people! I am by profession an Electronic/Electrical Engineer; in that profession we also have an avalanche physics theory which  is a cumulative process in which a fast-moving ion or electron generates further ions and electrons by collision; undergoing a rapid increase in rapid conductivity due to an avalanche process.

I lived in countries of the world “in Europe and the United States ” where I  saw both landslide and avalanches: never once heard anybody refer to a landslide as an avalanche. About two weeks ago there was an atmospheric river over Southern California where it rained for days which caused flooding, as a result there were numerous landslide, in cities outside of Los Angles; in the news coverage; I never heard one news cast in which they referred to a Landslide as an avalanche!

lbo: give credit where it is deserved! Here we are listening to a man who if he knows better is making himself a fool by trying to impress Dominicans that which they are viewing is caused by some avalanche; which we never had in Dominica and will never experience unless the global weather system by some miracle manage to invert! So let me cut this short, and state: Avalanches are actually rapid dangerous flowing snow, ice and debris down a steep slope usually triggered by weather condition, or human activity in the winter season: we don’t have winter in Dominica! On the contrary; Landslides involve the gravitational, downward movement of rocks, earth, and debris very often caused by heavy rain erosion and earthquakes.
Any medical doctor who attempts to refute that would have to be a fool, and so I introduce them to a field of science “Physical Geography, which has nothing to do with people: nevertheless Landforms read ” A Portrait Of A Planet.” Somebody need a lesson in Landforms!

Francisco, the word ‘avalanche’ was used quite correctly. An Avalanche can mean a large mass of material (soil, ice, rocks, snow) that descends rapidly from a mountain, hill or a high place.

We learn from each other. No big deal.

Well lbo, if we are dealing with this from a point of view; of a dictionary definition, we would have to accept the usage as correct! However, when we are dealing with a science; we have to accept it as the science determine. Therefore in geological terms: a landslide is defined as a downward, and outward movement of slope-forming materials, which includes rocks, soil, artificial fill, or a combination of those under direct influence of gravity. It is a form of mass wasting, a broader term covering any downslope movement of earth materials. I explained previously ” Landslides occurs when the gravitational force acting on a slope exceeds the shear strength of the material rock, or soil holding it in place.”

Now; that is quoted from Geological Textbook, and Physical Geography Textbook:” I used in college; it is a science taught in university and colleges at different levels!

Very observant! These are the same dudes who propagate a story that the village is at risk. Yet….they go close up to the source of the slide. I cyan understand the logic in this contradiction.

Great work guys! You have given us an irrefutable account of what’s actually taking place at risk to yourselves. Thanks, we appreciate you both.
