Wesley man serving life imprisonment for murder released after 32 years in jail

Dominica State Prison

A 50-year-old Wesley man who was serving a life imprisonment sentence at Dominica State Prison has been freed following his incarceration of over 30 years.

At the age of 18, Ike St. John was arrested and charged with the murder of Kell James of Marigot. He spent three years on remand until his conviction on October 25, 1994.

St. John was sentenced to death by hanging, however, then President the late Crispin Sorhaindo, commuted his death sentence to a term of life imprisonment.

On July 24, 2023, after St. John had spent 32 years in jail, attorney-at-law, Zena Moore Dyer, acting on the prisoner’s behalf, filed an application of motion for resentencing.

At the hearing, the defense attorney told Justice Thomas Astaphan that St. John was eligible for remission 10 years ago.

Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Sherma Dalrymple did not object to the application.

Consequently, Justice Astaphan in resentencing, sentenced St. John to time served.

Many others deserve serving 32 years and more, but they are released ahead of time…People must pay for their crime!
This person had more than enough time to reflect and to change direction!!
