While researching for her thesis focused on the socio economic impact of single female led homes and the negative indicators in the development of children, Mellissa Browne, a resident of the Mayaro/Rio Claro community was galvanized into establishing the NGO Women of Unique Distinction in 2016. On June 30th 2018, Women of Unique Distinction launched it’s programme FORMATION at the bpTT Mayaro Resource Center.
“The objective of Women of Unique Distinction is to re-engineer our community, through love, education and support. To deliver on the objective, Women of Unique Distinction’s Formation initiative, through strategic partnerships aims to implement solutions that would mitigate the community’s socio-economic shortcomings.’ Ms. Mellissa Browne.
Ms Browne, having researched the causes of juvenile delinquency amongst males and teen pregnancy amongst females, saw the need to create programs to combat these social issues within her community. Having herself experienced social prejudices, the need for change in how the society views and supports single female parents was apparent. After being fired for becoming pregnant, entrepreneurship became her response to an economic crisis. She resolved to not just find solutions for herself and her two young male offspring but to use what she was learning to positively impact other women in her community and by extension, their children and the men who she believed desperately needed a transformation of mindset along with the right tools, strategies and resources to elevate themselves and their families.
Innovative Workshops have been designed for delivery to the community. Single parents and their dependents, with a keen focus on creating entrepreneurship opportunities among single female parents, will be beneficiaries of this program. These workshops include but are not limited to:
