PERSONALITY OF THE MONTH (January): Tiyani Behanzin

Behanzin

Local magistrate Tiyani Behanzin has been voted DNO’s Personality of the Month for January in an online poll.

The poll was patronized by 440 voters and Behanzin gathered 62 percent or 272 votes, far outrunning his closest rival Kidron Alexander, who came in second with 16 percent or 72 votes.

Behanzin is a well-known, if not controversial, magistrate in Dominica. He recently assisted in hosting a successful Peace Conference in Wesley in which rivals in the village pledged to keep the peace and with one person announcing that he will abandon criminal acts and reform his life. The organizers plan to bring the Peace Conference to other communities.

The other nominees of the poll were: Edison James who received 14 percent or 60 votes, Danielle Williams who received 5 percent or 20 votes and Rhonda St. John who pulled in 3 percent or 16 votes.

    I’m not surprised!

I know him (Tiyani) well – a friend who possesses an unlimited number of attributes of a magistrate, including his personal qualities, job and health. In execution of his job he constantly demonstrates the following key personal qualities: good character, understanding and communication, social awareness, maturity and sound temperament, sound judgment and commitment and reliability.

Irrespective of the fact that he rightfully sentenced me to prove a point that not because I’m a friend I should escape the full force of the law, must I discredit his works for being a brilliant magistrate.

This says a lot about your integrity – to praise the quality of the person who sentenced you, “a friend,” for your wrong-doing.

Have seen the man, but have not made time to engage with him. Still, judging by the preponderance of the good things most people on here say about him, there must be truth to the qualities you mention.

A research and review (on DNO) of the man’s work, in his brief time on the bench in Dominica and abroad, shows man who takes his work seriously – some may say he’s a zealot – and executes the functions of the job scrupulously.

His call for government reform, as his father did in 2000, to resist/stamp out corruption in public office, campaign finance reform and more inclusion of Dominicans abroad in our economic and political life (not by proxy) is the clarion call for our current times.

Probably this is it. The man who will lead Dominica out of its present morass and to the promised land?

PS Someone alluded to criminal wrong-doing by Mr. Behanzin while in Britain. Please provide specific source with the reading audience where/how you got this information so we can appropriately calibrate our thinking on the future of the man.

      Thank you

Roosie Douglas was convicted as well, Nelson Mandela, John the Baptist, Malcolm X was assassinated so was Martin Luther King,

Let’s not use people’s past against them unless they did something really major.
