St. Lucia’s Dennery Segment coming to 2024 WCMF

Two new artists from St Lucia will join the line-up for the 24th Edition of the World Creole Music Festival (WCMF) scheduled for October 25-27 this year.

The announcement was made during a joint press launch which took place in St Lucia on Thursday.

Communications and Public Relations Specialist at the Discover Dominica Authority (DDA) Monelle Alexis said joining Jamaican dancehall sensation Valiant, Legendary Group Kassav and Soca Diva Nadia Batson from Trinidad & Tobago are  Subance, a charismatic performer and innovator, and Umpa.

Umpa and Subance will represent Dennery Segment for this year’s festival.

Brendon Charlery also known as “Umpa”  has been presented with over 17 awards locally including Dennery Segment Artist Of The Year and Outstanding Youth In Volunteerism  2021. Presently Umpa’s “ One Drop “ “Siren” “Chatou” “Zafeh Moun” “Baguy”, and  “Plat” singles have a combined viewership of the longest trending Dennery Segment songs.

Subance, also known as Belpap has contributed to the vibrant Soca and Creole music scene in St Lucia. Some of his popular songs include; “Feh Ah”, “Sue Say”, “Bad in BumBum”, and “Back Bend” among others.

 They will perform on Sunday, October 27.

Meanwhile, Destination Marketing Manager of DDA Andia Ravariere said this marks a day of ongoing efforts to forge a partnership, a relationship that solidifies the sisterhood between two amazing islands, Dominica and St Lucia.

“As part of those efforts, Dominica is proud to announce that this partnership has birthed the first-ever feature of  St Lucia’s Dennery Segment on Dominica’s World Creole Music Festival stage,” she said.

Ravariere stated that the Dennery Segment is an infectious rhythm capturing audiences regionally and internationally.

According to her, Dominica’s WCMF has become a staple in the region.

“We are proud to say that Dominica’s World Creole Music Festival was nominated for music event of the year by the Caribbean Music Awards…,” she revealed. “Dominica’s World Creole Music Festival from its inception has been a festival that brings people together, a festival that offers an experience like no other.”

Ravariere continued, “It is a time when we are proudly boasting of who we are as a people.”

Ravarie stated that she welcomes everyone, near and far to Dominica.

“Join us in our festivities…,” she encouraged.

The Strengthening the Disaster Management Capacity of women in the Cooperative Republic of Guyana and the Commonwealth of Dominica (GUYDOM) Project launches its Week of Activities with an Opening Ceremony on Monday, 22 November 2021. Through collaboration with the Government of the Commonwealth of Dominica, the GUYDOM project, which is facilitated by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean with the support of the Government of Japan, is engaging and educating the general public with a Visibility Blitz which will run until Friday, 26 November.

The Opening ceremony will be hosted virtually via UWITV (www.uwitv.org) as well as via the UNDP Dominica Facebook page and DNO. It will provide the public with an overview of the project’s progress thus far and further advocate for climate smart and disaster resilient farming practices in Dominica. Following the virtual session, several entertaining and informative activities are scheduled namely, two radio programmes which will be aired on DBS radio, Vibes Radio, Kari FM.
