UPDATE: ‘Ghetto Prince’ fined

Calypsonian Ghetto Prince was fined $10,000 on drug charges when he appeared before a Roseau Magistrate on Monday.

The 33 year old whose real name is Chris Metor, was told by Chief Magistrate Evaline Baptiste, that his actions and behaviour in drug dealing was “shameful” and that he needed to “rehabilitate himself, and learn a lesson” from that matter.

Metor was arrested on June 5, 2013 on St. Johnson Ave Goodwill after the police who were acting on a tip off, went to the area at about 12:45 p.m. and met Metor and another friend close to an old house. Both men were searched by police after they denied having drugs in their possession. However, a search of the area by the police discovered a clear plastic bag in a tire with aluminium foil wrappings with 26 pieces of cocaine weighing 3.8 grams.

The men were arrested but on arrival at the police station Metor admitted that the drugs belonged to him and said that he was “not working, stressed and frustrated and had a few pieces of cocaine to work with.”

After his arrest,  he had to be taken to Princess Margaret Hospital complaining of stomach pains.

He pleaded guilty to the offenses and in mitigation said he was sorry for his actions and ‘did not know what energy caused me to do that.”

However, a very annoyed and disturbed Chief Magistrate Baptiste expressed her disgust at the Metor’s actions.

“You not working is no excuse for having drugs, I am sure you can find something legal to do even if you can’t find work. If you are not taking it then you are one of these devils…monster who is selling. Shame on you. You have become an enemy of people, the state and society,” she said.

She told him that young persons were looking up to him as a calypsonian and he has “disappointed them sending mixed signals with his behaviour.”

She frowned on Metor for his actions and called on him to “take control of your life, rehabilitate yourself, change your behaviour and learn your lesson from that.”

He was fined $7,000 for possession and $3,000 for possession with intent to supply in default he faces 16 months in jail. The fines must be paid by December 31, 2013.

Why are you blaming the PM? Do you think it will better under another government? Wait and see. You are being unfair to him. Do you have any sense in your head that each one is responsible for him/herself? The PM did not send them or encourage them to traffic in and ingest drugs. You have noted that the police do catch some of those traffickers.
Evil flourishes and it is always one step ahead of the Law authorities. Evil always finds another way. This is the influence and work of Satan.
You could do something for your nation which could eradicate illegal drugs, recognize God, worship him, pray to him and perform good deeds. You could also commence with the youths and assist them instead of making foolish and unfair comments.

A sorry state for this young man. Last i heard, he had produced a few new songs that were already being aired by radio stations. I was looking forward to his first album. A very disappointing twist.

Yet, i cannot miss the glaring difference between his case and that of King Dice. DNO reported then that an unnamed magistrate fined the king $1,500.00 for possession of 190 grams of marijuana. That magistrate then seemed to have given Dice credit for his “social work”. (https://dominicanewsonline.com/news/homepage/news/crime-court-law/dice-pleads-guilty-to-marijuana-possession/)

Ghetto Prince was not so fortunate: 3.8 grams of cocaine, a heavy tongue-lashing (well-deserved one too), and $10,000.00 in fines. Was there any credit given to his inspiring contributions to our culture over the years.

No, i am not for a moment suggesting that he should have received credit. I simply pout out one thing: Even in our courts in Dominica, justice is meted out based on who you are, who knows you, and who likes you. To all would-be criminals, take up a few lessons at the Charm School before committing your acts.

Tom, it is a very rare for me to agree with you but on this occasion I do. You are right on point.

PS. We also have this ridiculous defence plea in mitigation bandied about, which I find irritating and irrelevant “Your honour, he did not waste the court’s time”. It’s like giving someone a reward for something they should not do in the first place.

But Ghetto Prince is a Stardom Tenter. So what! For me, that does not really matter.
This is a guy who should have received counselling and follow-ups to see whether he is progressing or regressing. We all need to be one anothers good keeper. That today, is lacking.

Strange enough, that comment seem to have been deleted.

Ghetto Prince sometimes our predicaments serve as a means to open up eyes. There many young people in Dominica who resort to selling crack cocaine simply because they cannot find jobs.
I am not going to judge the guest all. Let s face the truth – judge him if there were jobs for him and he choose to sell crack. Many of us glorify thieving politicians who at the end of the mnth rake in thousands of dollars not withstanding their perks and benifits – these politicians hijack government contracts, they are able to build nsions, villas, wn heavy equipment, own energy companies all of this he’s on while we are prepared to hang the Gheto Princes for selling crack or laundering money for influential drug dealers. This is simply ludicrous. We vote politicians into office so that they can create environments for peope to grow and make a living. Instead they make themselves wealthy while the ghetto princes must tun to crack selling just to be able to ate a bus ride to the bottom of the ministerial building.
No body knows the trouble I’ve seen, no one knows .

It is easy for us to sit back and condemn people and it is those in the kitchen that feel the heat. I will never condone drug peddling. I also understand that we are not all the same – while I may handle my frustration from unemployment and lack of opportunities by remaining composed another Peyton may do anything necessary for a buck to pay the bills
    We must not ignore ad avoid the status quo just because it s easy to as why didn’t he go till the soil, or go catch fish or go work construction. If we can point to the means and methods of making a living through agriculture and fishing in Dominica I would be the first to condemn a ghetto Princ. If I coud see real construction jobs and construction related economic activities and opportunities I would say Ghetto Prince you are a disgrace but I can’t cause I truly understand the struggle of te unemployed and disenfranchised young people. If there was money in agriculture right nw I am sure that many young peope would find employment or wh or another; the little construction jobs are done by the Chinese, cabalist of the party in power; n Argo processing;
So when Ghetto Prince blames the status quo we cannot honestly say that he s being untruthful

There use to be a home in Tarou for people with Lad (Leprocy). Maybe they should build something so for all drug convicts; and see if our drug problem won’t be solved. Because these people were not allowed to socialize with normal people, because their disease was contageous. Just like the drug problem – it’s contageous. So we should put these drug users and dealers in a home, and forebid them to go outside. ‘Drugie Home.”

Therefore whenever someone is caught smoking marijuana they should be discarded. Please note I an referring to marijauna. Now if that is the case then hundreds of folks in high offices in govt, private industry and self owned businesses who have smoked a few joints should be “toast”. I do not think so. I am not proposing legalizing the stuff, I am discussing the reality.

How the hell is that supposed to be Roosevelt Skerrits’ fault? Governments must create an enabling environment for upward mobility, however the CHOICE to deal in illegal drugs is not his fault. People want to live above their means, they want instant wealth, they want quick money. So long before Skerrit dream of politics Dominican young men have been risking it all to peddle drugs and plunder stores in the USVI, St Martin etc. The only thing is that they are more desperate and brazen, couple that with the advent of the E-tech we’re getting the news as it happens. All those who drowned, or are languishing in jails across the globe is Skerrit too? What about Personal Responsiblity? What about hard work and discipline? We’re too damn enviege and are lost as a people that is what our problem is. Nobody wants to sweat no more, nobody wants to build brick by brick and once their empire tumble down it’s blame game.

I don’t understand why anyone would be a fan to one whose stage name contains the word “Ghetto”. Why would anyone use such a name? To define his character or out of pure ignorance (not knowing the meaning)?

    • really???

That’s a stupid and ignorant statement.

I respect your opinion, but I stick to mine. let me explain. I don’t understand why anyone would be happy to be a prince of the “ghetto”. Ghetto means slum, it is associated with a degraded social level, poverty, etc. So yes, I am ignorant(lack knowledge) as to why this young man would crown himself as such. It may seem like just a “name” but my friend words are powerful, whatever you declare on yourself, whatever you speak on yourself this is what you become. Life or death is in the tongue. Haven’t you heard Dominican parents calling their children “ti bowoe” from very young? and you wonder why they behave as such.
