Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has lashed out against those who opposed the election of Baroness Patricia Scotland as Commonwealth Secretary General.

Speaking at the official renaming ceremony of the Vieille Case Primary School to the “Baroness Patricia Scotland Primary School” on Monday 14th December 2015, the Prime Minister said attacks against her were “vicious” by those who knew better.

“In the context of Dominica, it showed clearly the difference between astute leadership and the emotional throwing of tantrums,” he stated. “Baroness Scotland was ridiculed and attacked in a most vicious and personal way by some amongst us who, by virtue of their positions, should have known better.”

The Prime Minister apologized to Scotland on the behalf of the Government and people of Dominica.

“Even though the outcome speaks to the suitability and appropriateness of her candidacy, some are too arrogant and childish to apologize for their reckless utterances and unsatisfactory behavior,” he stated. “Therefore, on behalf of the Government and people of Dominica, today, Baroness Scotland, I wish to formally apologize to you for the less than dignified behavior of some of your compatriots who clearly were misguided and used foolishly by others.”

Skerrit said as Prime Minister of Dominica, he makes it a point never to speak out of turn and on occasions has opted to remain silent on matters, in order to disguise or even ‘conceal the ignorance of others.’

He noted that at a recent meeting of Heads of the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States the issue of the campaign for the election of a new Commonwealth Secretary General was raised.

“Several persons in attendance were zooming in and focusing on this matter for the very first time,” he said. “I had been intricately involved in the process for close to one year. So when some amongst us jumped into the debate at the 11th hour, making all sorts of emotional noises, I knew exactly where Baroness Scotland’s campaign was positioned and that we had the numbers required to make a success of her candidacy.”

He said that he was accused by some in Dominica for “being small minded, selfish and insular, but, on the day of the election in Malta, some made it through to the second round and ultimately to victory, while others did not.”

Skerrit added that he was satisfied that the Baroness stood the best chance of winning and pointed out that she and her team “ran an excellent campaign” adding that he was never in doubt about her capacity to win.

He noted that in the end common sense and reason prevailed and Baroness Scotland was duly elected as Commonwealth Secretary General, benefiting from the support of most Caribbean countries.

“What this all pointed to, however, was our readiness as a people and our maturity, or lack thereof as a civilization, to step onto the world stage,” the Prime Minister noted. “We will not be taken seriously as a nation, Ladies and Gentlemen if persons in high places continue to wear their ignorance as a badge of honor. There are times when we must close ranks as a people and as a nation and fall in behind the national flag. The campaign to elect a Commonwealth Secretary General was one such occasion and opportunity. There should have been no division in Dominica on this matter!”

He added, “When I said in the last general elections campaign that certain persons were not suited for public office, persons thought I was being frivolous. But how can you have elected Members of Parliament behaving in so irresponsible a manner? Can you imagine the state Dominica would be in today, had the national vote on December 8th last year gone any other way?”

For her part Scotland had words for critics of Prime Minister Skerrit and cabinet.

“Di yo suce sel (tell them to suck salt),” she said.

If the Baroness knew better, she would not ask us to “suce sel” Because we are already doing just that. No right person in the right mind would ask us to suck more of that salt. The Baroness surely does not know anything about the salt we have been sucking for years. We are accustomed to sucking our salt Baroness. Now go suck your sugar in peace.

Many Dominicans, in particular supporters of the UWP are outraged by the statement of the Baroness, but they should not be surprised, this is a Skeritt led Administration and supporters’ thing. Remember, ” tell Lennox to go to hell, go to hell.” Remember, ” no law, no constitution…”. Remember Tony, ” Crush them mosquitoes with de shoes, when I say kakador, you say Edison, when I say mosquito, you say, Tim Tim.” Remember, ” them fellers eat like pigs from a trough.” Remember Pierre Charles, ” Dominicans wear their ignorance like a badge of honor.” Remember Lennox the lawyer, ” hunt them down like Obama hunting down Al-Qaeda with drons.” Most recently, the Baroness, “di yo suce sel.” If a man can get me a job which pays a yearly salary of 160, 000 pounds, a rent free four-storey mansion in a luxurious community to reside, there is nothing, I would not say or do for him.

Yes Baroness we have been sucking salt for the past 20 years under skerrit and his DLP administration; your comments (mepouis) are rather appropriate and you even had the fools laughing and clapping themselves. Did we in D/ca say anything about you that’s not true? You are a brilliant lady no doubt about that but like grand mama told me and I hope for your sake she is wrong ” You can take the woman out of the vemin but you cannot take the vemin out of the woman” we are free to give our PM mapouis in Dominica is our damb VAT money dat paying him.

I listened to the Baroness’ address at the school’s renaming. I truly enjoyed her calm voice and inspirational stories of good upbringing and prayerful life. I was pleased with her kind words. However, I thought her utterance of “Suce Sel” to the critics of the Prime Minister was quite shocked. It was like an angel immediately turning away from her angelic demenor to please the devil. I was seriously disappointed. From this day, I realized now how influential our PM is – even the Baroness stooped to his level.

Here is what the late Dr. Nicholas Liverpool had to say about Baroness Scotland’s nationality in his statement of support, on Baroness Patricia Janet Scotland’s own campaign website on 1 April of this year:

“Patricia Scotland is Dominican by birth, Antiguan by descent through her father and British by operation of the law…” H.E. Dr. Nicholas Liverpool, former President Commonwealth of Dominica (www.patriciascotland.com/#1support endorsements/cppa).

With a doctorate in law I defer to the late President’s legal opinion, which could not have been put more succinctly.

As Secretary General of the British Commonwealth, Patricia Scotland will be based at Marlborough House in London, in close proximity to Buckingham palace. As head of the Commonwealth Queen Elisabeth II will be her boss, which is ironic in a sense since among the Caribbean nations it is Dominica, which does not recognise Queen Elisbeth II as its head of state.

Prior to watching the live broadcast of welcome to Baroness Scotland, I was not totally convinced about her desire and commitment to serve the Commonwealth. However, having watched this absolutely sincere, family-orientated and God-fearing lady, there is no doubt in my mind that she is guided by God.

Baroness, I extend my profound apologies to you for any doubts, I may have had about you.

I pray that the Lord will continue to guide and protect you as he has obviously been doing.

I am sure that you will achieve all you set out to.

Many are commenting on a very complex issue in a very simplistic way. The levels/amount of behind the door wranglings, concessions and negotiations such appointments actually require, very few will even begin to understand. Do we really think that other Caribbean leaders want a third Dominican (PAHO, CARICOM, C/wealth) in another prominent global role? Despite what we may think very few people even know Dominica exists & know that it is different from Dominican Republic. If we can leverage this new appointment, perhaps it may actually lead to greater exposure for our island. I do not always agree with the policies and practices of the present govt but I love this statement: There are times when we must close ranks as a people and as a nation and fall in behind the national flag. I shudder to think what our foreign engagement would look like under another administration.

May I be permitted to ask the question of the powers that be … what became of the POST ERIKA APPEALS FUNDS and benefits which BARONESS SCOTLAND was suppose to collect for Dominica as the Chairperson of the DOMINICA APPEALS FUND ? How much did she receive on our behalf ..there was a website which claimed that she was the lead for the appeals fund .This could be good reason for her ascension to hero status of DOMINICA if indeed she performed as such !!
May I also ask besides being appointed through her UK campaign which the PM said as much, that he knew of such advances in the campaign unknown by other caribbean Leaders and proposed by Dominica what has she done for Dominica to deserve the naming of the school in OLIVER LEBLANC village ?!

There are various elements in this debate— Clearly Skerritt won
However RULE BRITANNIA has had the waves of colonial dominance which did make a presence as the voting influence was more of Great Britain ensuring they got their former AG and a peer from the HOUSE of the colonial master to ensure that the colonies did vote for one of their own-a lady of the upper house .
Yet one must agree that irrespective we have a born Dominican at the highest level this should count for something
Domincan yes but Antigua maybe as the fact of her father,s birthright gave way to the womb of the mother !
Dominicans -Philip Potter was once the black pope of the Protestant world council of churches ..ARCHBISHOP Bowers of the African catholic churches when Black church leaders were relatively unknown ,,now we have Archbishop -Cardinal Felix !
So we move on to Dr.Carissa PAHO Head
We failed to claim DEFRIETAS UK Cricketer and Bruno Boxer UK WORLD HEAVY WEIGHT BOXER…Both Dominicans…

As PM of D/ca he had every right to apologize on behalf of D/cans. It was appropriate of him. Some of these D/cans embarrassed the PM.
I was hoping the Baroness would not know about their attitude as also Linton for one in his position. What a shame! The PM had no alternative but to let it be known and apologize to her.
If only you would hear yourselves and see yourselves. It is a shame that some of you acted in an unbecoming manner. I must say you lack good manners and need to learn some as Linton.
Do you ever place yourselves in someone’s shoes/position as the Baroness? How would you have liked that if it were you, to be treated in that manner?
Some of you call others hypocrites. As Christians as you refer to yourselves, you mention the Name of God. Whoever you are, you are a disappointment and are the hypocrites. Shame on you! You are the cause of division, disunity and D/ca going from bad to worst. You denied yourselves God’s blessing and graces.

How many Dominicans knew about that woman before they found out about her in the international news, where we found out she broke the law, and employed an illegal immigrant in her house England?

She might be important to you; who seems to be hanging on to her dress tale only to make yourself feel important, her confirmation in the position is not going to gain Dominica anything, she cannot provide you with money to run the country, she has no power to direct investors to Dominica, if you do not believe me ask Saunders who held a similar position if he was able to do anything for Antigua while he served!

Most reverences to that case have been carefully wiped from the internet but not all and I recommend to visit: http://www.theregisterco.uk/print/2009/09/22baroness_scotland. In Canada, the United States, and all over Europe, including England, when someone decides to employ someone they must acquire the employee Social Security number. The reason is, it is mandatory that they deduct a certain amount of money from the persons pay to contribute into the social security system in addition to income tax.

When the person becomes unemployed, or ill, they can go to collect unemployment, and other benefits if they are sick. The employer, contributes a part of the contribution. However, when dishonest people employ illegal they do that because they, contributes nothing to the social security system, they exploit the who takes it all simply because they want to live.

So, explain to Francisco how you come to the conclusion she broke no law!

I was very appalled to hear the Secretary General designate’s words in the form of mapuis to us, Dominicans. This truly tells me that she does not really represent Dominica and Dominicans but she is about HER MAJESTY’S business and it doesn’t matter what the populace thinks. The thing is, she was nominated by the prime minister and she has been selected so who vex, must get lost. As far as I see, this is very unbecoming of her and a smart person would ignore those who oppose. Everyone has an opinion and it is natural that many will oppose and give their comments.
I just see this as further dividing the little island more than it was before.
In such a time as this, we don’t really need all this bacchanal in Dominica. There are other things that need more attention, such as helping those who are still suffering from the after effects of hurricane Erika. The government needs to focus on the the things that are affecting the people and stop spending money that poor people need.

Some Labourites just love to celebrate with their Supreme Leader even when his victory is not even a victory at all. The election of Baroness Scotland to the Office of Commonwealth Secretary General is a victory for the Baroness and for Great Britain, not a victory for DOMINICA! Why? Because Baroness Scotland’s agenda is certainly not the advancement of Dominica or the Dominican agenda. At her positions in Great Britain the great Baroness had ample opportunity to lobby the British Government on Dominica’s interests. She never did! The Baroness’ first official statement after winning the elections was that she would lobby for the interests and rights of the LGBT community…not for financial aid to help a failing “homeland”! The Labourites who are celebrating with the Prime Minister are celebrating what they believe is HIS victory. They hardly knew anything about the Baroness until her name was brought to the political landscape a few months ago. We are all losers here!

She should have kept the motto of being the bigger person and leave the MAYPHWEY (THROWING OF WORDS) to those whose life style is nothing but being in the gutter. We all know in the old cliche about “rolling with pigs in mud” She don’t have to join the circle of throwing words at those you object. After all she was also addressing the children present. This time he wants Dominicans to believe that the way he sprung the “great” Baroness on us, just expecting us (ALL DOMINICANS) to accept her even against OECS and CARICOM consensus is the fault of the opposition party and it’s supporters. When, in fact, it’s Doctor Skeritt’s own habits of secrecy and failing to inform the Dominican Citizenry on what he is doing with their tax dollars which is the true culprit. You see Mr, Prime Minister, while you and Francine Baron was throwing your party in London to support and promote the Baroness, we Dominicans were never informed. So of course you would know about the Baroness’ chances of winning as you so vigorously campaigned for her. However, you just sprung the dear Baroness on Dominicans and demanded that they support you in her nomination as you are clearly showing now. The issue is about YOU…not the Baroness.

The Baroness will be our Secretary General for the Commonwealth Nations in April…we congratulate her and wish her the best. Yet, the Baroness is human like the rest of us..she should be able to handle criticism. Returning to Dominica for the first time in many years, wanting to be accepted as “A DOMINICAN”, expecting to be adored and admired, a lady of high office and standards tells a large faction of her “homeland” to…”suck salt”???? Mr. Skerrit these are the very words that makes your endeavor to embarrass the opposition on what you believe is a great victory for you has BACKFIRED! If you didn’t do enough to divide our great Isle of beauty already, you sure did enough now. You’ve dragged this Baroness all the way from England to join in your game of dirty politics? The shame is on you my friend!

      • December 14, 2015

The Labourites who would rather condone, support and even encourage a man who is impoverishing his own Country to enrich himself and his cronies than a man who is willing to risk it all for his people, putting his very life on the line so that we can have jobs again, food on our tables and an Island that is productive, are either very stupid, very wicked or extraordinarily naive. This whole issue and saga with our dear Prime Minister and our new Queen of Dominica, Baroness Scotland really holds NO BENEFIT for Dominicans who are suffering here and now. Do some of you believe that as soon as the Baroness takes office things will start flowing for Dominica? That we will be on easy street, living in the land of milk and honey? The Baroness is here now and we are still in Misery…go ask the people of Delices and Boetica, Petite Savane and Coulibistrie! The Baroness will leave and we will still be in misery! I admire and respect the Baroness but she is not THAT important…sorry!

The only value in a fox is the roadkill they eats and their pelt after they are dead.
The landed classes are known to hunt them on horseback and farmers simply shoot them. And now they have become a menace in inner cities, raiding garbage cans, spreading rabies and attacking toddlers in their beds, whilst covered in fleas. Yet, I admit, it is God’s creature, renowned for its slyness.

Corruption undermines democratic institutions, plunges a country into poverty, perverts the rule of law and stifles economic growth.Did you or any of the other in your party make any statement to Dominicans on that day? I can not help but wonder how our so called returnees feel about all this. Stories abound of them being called, in a derogatory manner “zangle” and “etrangay” and being tolerated only for the money they invested and continue to bring into the local economy on a regular basis.
It must be bittersweet for them to see a member of the House of Lords wanting to be embraced as a true Dominican. No more than that, as a chosen daughter, who did not have to endure the challenges, hassles and harrassment faced by those who returned from England to especially retire here.
I know a lot of them will remain silent but the pain in their hearts must be very palpable. and I do feel for them.

On another note, you must stop being childish or playing ignorant of the fact that you are the Prime minister of Dominica and not the prime minister of DLP, so stop wearing party colors as a uniform. You and your colleagues need advise by an image consultant. … Your image as a leader for all Dominicans is questionable by your actions and sometimes your words… You tend to say : de yo cousay sel

According to a disappointed Labor Party supporter, “mem bet mem pwel”. I wonder what the English press will report, when they hear those comments. She has shown her early disrespect to the people of Dominica. If she believes her comments were meant for supporters of the opposition, when Carlye and the other press reporters report that type of story to the world, as far as the world is concerned, that indecent language is coming from the Island of Dominica not a particular group of Dominicans. They are like little children who make their parents and family embarrassed and ashamed. This is what they did to Dominica. Talk of tourism. This may dampen Dominica’s reputation worldwide.

You are right to say it is not about the Baroness, but its about PM Skerrit nominating her and she having won the post.

Also he would have inquired of her interest, before he nominated her–what is your thing about “awkward position”–isn’t it you and your counterparts who made it so, by not accepting her victory?

People like you cannot tolerate the fact that with PM Skerrit there is going to be victory, for he is a man who has the guidance of God from the first day he became Dominica’s Prime Minister

None. What impact is she going to have on tourism to Dominica and ensuring garbage is collected and disposal law enforced? None. What impact is she going to have on increasing manufacturing and production and getting feeder roads repaired so poor farmers like folks in Salisbury can access their farms? None. The only thing we celebrating is she born in Dominica so we should support. Is the same mentality that have possi people voting labour no matter what. Yes congratulations to her for she is first woman secretary general of Commonwealth that just happened to have Dominica roots. That is a personal accomplishment like everything else in her life. We are saying that money for the party could be given to them and have a party if that’s what PM want when Baroness pick up the job in April 2016 I think that’s when the term ends, and to top it off her Office would be the one who would be paying for her travelling around the Commonwealth to meet the different heads of States, so why don’t you think for yourself before you make comments, Linton and others didn’t make this mess it’s your PM and his ego , and that’s why he does that to the people because they don’t think for themselves .

By the leadership of a mind which is warped by hatred and anger–the desire to have the vengeance of the devil? Patricia Scotland you think you are clever but you are very rude to tell people to suck salt that do not agree with our P.M., especially those people that were and still are so poor that literally salt is all they have to suck on. That was not a clever or funny remark at all and many of us will be hurt by that. Mark my words, it will come to haunt you.

I hope you can all see the ladies that are connected to the PM have the same attitudes like him, instead of her trying to understand the concerns of the natives she joined PM in being not only rude but nasty to them by using lines like, tell people to suck salt that was not call for.. We all said that Linton shouldn’t have tore up the invitation he should just decline but his reasons are valid.. putting the people before lavish party comes first .. people when are we going to take back our Island,, when ? so what you all have to say about what she said now.

I don’t need Roosevelt Skerrit to apologise on my behalf. I have nothing to apologise for. I have nothing personal against Patricia Scotland but as I see it she is British first. What is wrong with that? And don’t ask me to stand behind you young man. I do not respect your policies or the way you treat people and you are not an example I wish to follow.
