COMMENTARY: Is Sean Douglas a ‘dark horse’ in our politics?

Sean Douglas

I don’t have a crystal ball, but what if Sean Douglas’ senatorial appointment proves to be the catalyst for change? Notwithstanding his tenure as press secretary in the Skerrit administration, Sean has since kept himself under the radar in terms of political popularity. That is until the management of Q95 recognized the need to inject him into the political discourse by way of temporary occupancy of Matt Peltier’s popular ‘Talk on the Block’ slot. By this exposure, Dominicans were able to experience firsthand, Mr Douglas’s true journalistic and political eminence.

The move was strategic for various reasons. Most importantly, there was a need for a family member to supersede Ian Douglas in an effort to salvage what’s left of the Douglas legacy. Many have argued that Skerrit has long been assiduously working on destroying the family legacy, and there is adequate evidence to support this argument. Case in point is where in the aftermath of Roosie Douglas’ untimely demise, Ian Douglas entered the Government as a representative of the Portsmouth Constituency. Skerrit never really gave him the respect he deserved as an attorney. Instead, he treated Ian much like someone beneath his true ranks.

It’s therefore easy for one to conclude that pulling away Ross University and donating it to his buddy, Mia Motley, demonstrated the PM’s utter disdain and disregard for Ian Douglas. He further dealt the Portsmouth Parl Rep another blow by appointing him ambassador to Cuba. Granted, many may argue that Ian never really asserted his true position as the conduit for continuity of the Douglas legacy left by his father, uncle, and grandfather who preceded him. Instead, Ian has been quite complacent with remaining acquiescent while ‘toeing Skerro’s line’.

But hold on, there may be a silver lining amid all the chaos and dismay. As a senator in the opposition, Sean can now rehabilitate their legacy by commanding some much-deserved respect and dignity. In addition, he is now able to vindicate his reputation by repairing his image, which has been caricatured by Skerrit’s minions.

Most importantly, our hope is that Sean’s senatorial debut into the politics is just the beginning of his political ambitions. It is now entirely up to him to use this opportunity as a stepping stone to bigger and better things. To get there, however, he is tasked with a major obstacle of awakening his constituents from their coma. It is common knowledge that Portsmouth has been the ‘chink in Dominica’s armor’ in terms of hopes for the future. Bringing some semblance of reason to his fellow constituents will take us a long way towards ‘unclogging the pipeline’ to economic development. The underlying point here is that inclusion of Mr Douglas can potentially be the impetus for much-needed change. They say change sometimes comes from unexpected directions; we will take it wherever it comes from—even from a virtually unknown in the realm of politics.

But wait I taught that the news said that Opposition leader whatever is her name revoked the appointment of Scean Douglas, so how comes Mr. Sean Douglas instead of telling the nation the reason for he been fired is PM Roosevelt Skerrit he is attacking about Roos University and his Douglas family Portsmouth don’t belong to and special family, the question that we are asking is why did you the Leader of the Opposition fired you, Sean Douglas and is not why Skerrit is out to destroy the Douglas dynasty Roosevelt Skerrit is not the leader of the Opposition and he did not write tonthe President to revoke your appointment. So tell us why you were fired as a senator that’s what we want to know not what Skerrit did, leave PM out of your confusion. Further more how and under what condition can you win the Portsmouth seat?

Why such an obsession with Sean Douglas, suggesting he is a ‘dark horse’ in our politics. Bitterness and being as Propagandist are not the treats of a dark horse in Politics. To propose to Dominicans that Sean displayed true journalistic and political eminence on Q95 in the absence of Matt Peltier’s popular ‘Talk on the Block’ slot is somewhat ludicrous and misleading, did you forget this https://dominicanewsonline.com/news/homepage/homepage-carousel/commentary-gregor-nassiefs-response-to-sean-douglas/

If Sean has to contribute anything worthy in Politics and follow the Family legacy he is trying to accomplish, he needs to be a candidate and run for election, face the electorate, not come in through the back door as a Senator in Parliament, you are entitled to your opinion. I see Sean as another masquerading dark horse of the Opposition, like those before him.

After all what Sham Douglas said about the 2022 election anybody who support him being in parliament is as crooked as a corkscrew. In the 2000 election UWP told Dominicans Rosie Douglas was a communists, jailbird, deportee and an arsonist. They said he was jailed in Canada for burning a school. When Rosie died UWP began crying crocodile tears saying how good Rosie was as if Dominicans are aholes.Sham Douglas just prove how idiotic these people can be,they are so shameless the on DNO saying how smart sham is.Everytime a JAH KA.S call Q95 she use to refere to ugly Lenny as my Prime Minister, typical UWP buried up to their eyebrows in S * * *.Today Sham Douglas is in Ugly Lenny is out.The same Lenny who told us he was backstabbed and vilified by people in UWP,he is yet to say by whom.LIAR.

That is it Mr Putin, the reason why he was given the Sgt, Major boots by Skerrit. This Joseph guy does not mention the reason Sean lost his job as press secretary, nor does he mention his crookedness and lies about the sham and immoral 2022 election. The FOX.This piece by Jeffers Joseph stinks of a coverup for corruption.

That is why UWP will always remain in the yard.Sham Douglas was recorded by an undercover UWP operative BOASTING of how he was making big money, eating expensive food and living in expensive hotels when he travelled on government business. The recording was taken to Skerrit and Sham Douglas was removed as press secretary. In the 2022 election Sham Douglas was the attack dog, telling people do not take part in the election because it was a SHAM,immoral and a disrespect to the Dominican people.Today Sham is in the sham house, the immoral house and the house of disrespect, with an immoral Prime Minister with immoral members of parliament. For years Sham has campaigned against DLP,everytime he has lost, his only chance in the house was to betray UWP and he did so successfully.

I will make it short and simple. Sean will have my vote if runs in Portsmouth.

Sean is a propagandist, he can bring no improvement to the Dominica political landscape. He was once an operative of the DLP and left because he said he was not paid enough and that was during hard economic times. Just another talker.

@point. You said that the gentleman asked for an increase in pay during hard economic times. My question to you is: Are Dominicans doing better now economically? Our unemployment rate is extremely high while the poor keeps getting poorer. Meanwhile, the people of Dominica are compelled to pay the PM house rent of $64,000.00 per month. Doesn’t that concern you? I don’t think so. You are POINTLESS and distracted.

Interesting but empty commentary and no apologies for saying so. Some things to note:
    1. Sean Douglas is NOT registered to vote in Portsmouth. He is registered to vote in the Roseau Valley Constituency
    2. Sean Douglas has never really shown any interest in voting, much less voting a UWP Candidate. Ask Sean when last he went to vote in the Roseau Valley Constituency against the Dominica Labour Party candidate?
    3. Sean never supported nor endorsed Pat Corbette or Nicholls Andrew or Jefferson James. Ask them.

While I respect Sean as a brilliant young man, and I am sure he will contribute well the the debate in the house. I do not think that he stands a chance at the polls in the Portsmouth Constituency. But only time will tell. I wish him well in this new pursuit made possible by the Honorable Jesma Paul; a decision not many Salisbury people endorsed.

Sean Douglas is clearly an erudite person. He is quite knowledgeable, reasonably articulate, disciplined and intellectually curious.

On the flip side, I have misgivings about him being a member of a disputed parliament controlled by a rejected, disgraced man in the chair as Speaker of the House and a most godawuful conman ( Roosevelt) as ‘leader’ of the country.

These are dark and perilous times in Dominica. Let’s just hope that the presence of Sean Douglas will be a silver lining in our overly dark parliament.

“Sean Douglas is clearly an erudite person. He is quite knowledgeable, reasonably articulate, disciplined and intellectually curious.” He may be all of these but surely not disciplined. He is prone to emotional outbursts, was fired because he was supposedly caught on audio tape bragging about how he could fleece the treasury, and he just made one of the biggest flip flop surrounding the December 2022 elections. I do not see discipline in these examples.

Dominicans are strange people Douglas spent his time on q begging people not to take part in the elections, then he excepts a seat in the same parliament and nobody sees anything wrong with that, are you people serious. He is being paid for this position while those that did not take part have to find ways to level their lost income, I ask again are you people serious? This is shocking and another example of what is wrong with the whole system of leadership in this country.
Sadly for Dominica to move forward you have to start afresh and remove everybody in governance today including the opposition who are totally confused when it comes to proactive and constructive ways of dealing with issues put before them. The truth hurts but facts don’t lie.

The only persons who support Sean are the diehard UWP supporters… the core. I can assure you that most Dominicans do not hold much respect for Sean, not even within the UWP. In act, most UWP supporters deal with him with a very long handle.

accepts, not excepts….geez! how it annoys me to see poor grammar!

anyway let me take the opportunity to give my two cents

Sean ni troupe “lang”…. his tongue has been his biggest downfall and I do not think he has learnt his lesson over the years

We need less arrogant and more humble people who actually give a damn about the people to get involved in politics in Dominica.

Ian has been largely disrespected by Skerrit, but it’s because of his (Ian’s) own doing. He never asserted himself as a Douglas, he was too ready to defend Skerrit’s lies, deception, trickery and corruption; no wonder he will best be remembered as a Skerrit dictated DLP singer/croaker of the song:
“”We Voting Labour We Shall Not Be Moved””
Sean is a totally different person. He is bright, confident, always sober and exposes corrupt practices. He has already won the hearts of many, by just a few days exposure on Q95…My greatest fear is that the house Speaker will work assiduously to interrupt his contribution as a form of frustrating him, but from the outset, Sean should expect that, and find a way to surmount that obstacle.
    Skerrit your inveterate LIAR!!!!
