Magistrate Pearl Williams has denied bail to a 47-year-old man from Back Street Calibishie charged with the 18th and final homicide in Dominica for 2023.
Wayne O’Brien appeared in the Roseau Magistrate Court today, January 2, 2024, charged with the murder of 63-year-old John Celestine also of Calibishie.
According to the charge of the police, it alleged that on December 28, 2023, at Calibishie, O’Brien did murder Celestine. Succeeding the charge being read to the accused, he was not required to enter a plea since murder is an indictable offense expected to be tried at the High Court before a Judge and jury.
Police Inspector Fixton Henderson earlier reported that on December 28, 2023, at about 5:45 pm the lifeless body of Celestine was found lying on the ground in a pool of blood at Back Street in Calibishie.
“There was a large laceration to the right side of his face,”
Henderson stated. “He was examined and pronounced dead by a medical doctor at the scene.”
At today’s Court hearing, Police Prosecutor Inspector Davidson Cadette objected to bail, and Magistrate Williams upheld the objection, denying bail to O’Brien, who was unrepresented.
Consequently, he was remanded into custody at the Dominica State Prison.
The Preliminary Inquiry in the matter was adjourned to April 12, 2024, at the Wesley Magistrate Court. During this stage of the matter, the Magistrate will determine if there is sufficient evidence in the case to be tried at the High Court.
