Commencement of classes projected for September 2023 at new university in Portsmouth

Limkokwing University replaces Ross University School of Medicine in Portsmouth

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has announced a replacement for Ross University School of Medicine (RUSM), revealing that classes are expected to begin in September this year.

He made the announcement during a press conference this week.

In August 2018, RUSM announced that it would be shutting down its operation in Dominica and would be operating in Barbados from January 2019.

RUSM was located in Portsmouth and was a huge source of income for the island’s second town for about 40 years.

“The replacement of Ross, as you know we have signed an agreement with a company. We have also handed over since last October to that group,” he said. “They have taken over the campus, they have staff on island and the numbers are increasing to start the preparatory work for the commencement of classes.”

He continued, “Based on the agreement we expect classes to commence in September.”

In fact, Prime Minister Skerrit said that the group has been contracting accommodation for their staff.

“They are also in very intense discussions and negotiations with accommodation for the students and so they are well on their way to preparing for the commencement of classes in September 2023 and based on what is happening we are very confident that realization will come to a positive pass,” he said.

Furthermore, he believes that the replacement for RUSM would be a major step for Dominica to have the facility functioning once more.

“We appreciate the positive impact it has especially on property owners, those who own apartments in the Picard area, Portsmouth,” he noted. “And so we look forward to the commencement of classes in September.”

Concerning the government’s part of the agreement Skerrit indicated that his government has fulfilled those commitments and the other party is also fulfilling their responsibility in a “very diligent manner.”

Meanwhile, he revealed that the government has invested in the refurbishment of some buildings in Portsmouth to provide office accommodation for Clear Harbor, “and that in itself has had a very positive impact on Picard and Portsmouth in particular where we have over 300 people employed directly.”

“One can also appreciate the indirect employment and what is interesting is that we have people from all over Dominica working at Picard, Portsmouth, young people, many of whom have rented accommodation in the Picard, Portsmouth area,” Skerrit explained.

He added, “If we can get the university back and running it certainly will add tremendous value and benefits to the people in the north and of course the entire economy.”

In 2014, the  Malaysian-based Limkokwing University published an article on its website saying it had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Dominica to establish an international campus of the university on the island.

The article said both Dominica and the university, “aspire to create a new kind of campus which will be a unique and cutting-edge University campus specializing in travel, tourism and hospitality management and other disciplines that will contribute greatly to the ongoing social and economic transformation of Dominica.”

The article also said the MOU was signed by a delegation headed by Emmanuel Nanthan with Dato’ Gail Phung, Limkokwing University’s Senior Vice President of Corporate Development.

Dominicans will tired be fooled by this one man party, those with the intellectual fortitude that support this party and Govt do it for their own personal gains whereas on the flip side those without the cranular capacity simply shout laybah! Shameful what we’ve resigned to in Dominica. Unless the people of this country take a serious stand this Govt led by the tyrant Roosevelt Skerrit will continue to engage in the robbery and deceit of Dominicans .

Lying Roosevelt doesn’t even believe himself most times. Just like he solemnly promises an economic bonanza every budget, this well heralded university, the proposed panacea for all of Dominica’s economic woes, will fall flat on its face.

Even if this university by some miraculous act comes to fruition, it can never be a true replacement for RUSM that was 33% of your Gross Domestic Product. What oxygen is to the a human being ROSS was to the local economy.

The bums told us Skerrit would never get Clear Harbor into Dominica.Today there are almost 2,000 Dominicans employed at the same Clear Harbor. The bums told us Skerrit would never be able to get two Dominican arrested for drugs in Cuba, out of Cuba. They told us the Douglas- Charles was built for Venezuelan Jet bombers. These bums has told so many lies over the years,Dominicans believe they even lie about their name.

Thanks for more of your nonsense, Skerrit. On a different note, a few public servants who were in one way, or another involved in what we know as government owned and controlled Petro Caribe operation. These public servants – Skerrit, Ian Pinard, Reginald Austrie, Emmanuel Nanthan, Marcia Walters may have some answers related to where Petro Caribe is sourcing its fuel nowadays. I also want to ask the above-named public servants whether the Petro Caribe operation is now a private corporation and if it is still a government entity then please explain this phenomenon – Why would a government owned entity terminate a fuel delivery contract with a private citizen, bought the truck from that private citizen and then hire him to drive the same truck for Petro Caribe? What kind of government does this? Certainly not one interested in building wealth among it’s citizens and lifting entrepreneurs out of difficulties. A government on a mission to dominate the private sector!

I have read and reread this article with interest.

Firstly, I believe that it is about time that the Dominican people ALL know that Ross University left Dominica because the top brass of the school’s corporate structure chartered a jet to Dominica in order to have a meeting with our prime minister.

I discussed this matter with a senior professor who indicated that the flight arrangements costed 75 000 USD. On arrival at Skerritt’s office, he was unavailable as he was too busy playing politics with Joseph Isaac and his plot to get the Roseau central seat for his wife.

The delegation was referred to Reginald Austrie. They felt highly insulted as we all know that Skerritt ” runs things in Dominica”. There were issues on the table that only a commitment from Skerritt would have sufficed

The first stated reason for leaving Dominica was that they needed a government that they could work with!

Moving down the article, he says that he had discussions with stakeholders…

Can Dominican please take notice of what was said by the empty and wicked Skerrett? So why couldn’t we have 2 universities in Portsmouth, a marina and those hotels plus clear harbour? Please have a dialogue with me

RUSM was an established institution for 49 years, any other university in the area of Portsmouth and all the others that i’ve mentioned would provide the added incentives and livelihood for the north and Dominica by extension.

Portsmouth could be the envy of Dominica and the Caribbean by extension with all the monies we have acquired via CBI.

If Dominicans haven’t recognised that Skerrett have only regress the country the last 15 plus year and do all to progress our blessed land by removing his sham bunch of “lazy persons for the job” 26 cabi-not, then i see doomed.

If If. Why not when? This is a statement of uncertainty and indicates to PM that Captain Crook is the king of pie in the sky. The phantom Baker with a bakery on Morne Au Diable. ” cutting-edge University campus specializing in travel, tourism and hospitality management and other disciplines that will contribute greatly to the ongoing social and economic transformation of Dominica.
You know that is the greatest load of hogwash since a bunch of little green men was found sleeping with Roosevelt in his backyard!
It is supposed to be a cutting-edge university campus specializing in travel, tourism and hospitality!
So, it takes a university in Dominica to teach the world how to be friendly and as a receptionist be generous in entertaining visitors, and strangers; in reality it the business of simple providing food, and drinks to customers.
Once again someone has pinned the tail on the donkey!
Stupid people are not hard to fool; the university is out of Malisia, however when it is researched, we find a bunch of Africans talking crap.
Ross should sue Roosevelt for using their name to promote this crap!
    Another joke on Skerrit!
