One person was taken to hospital due to apparent electrocution as a result of a fire which occurred on Hillsborough Street this evening, according to personnel of the Fire and Ambulance Services Division.

I don’t know if DNO will post this but I’m sure I’m not the only one thinking that this could be a case of arson.
We all know that real estate in the capital city is prime property. Especially so close to Government Headquarters and the National Stadium. Not to mention Halsborough Medical Center, Medicus Laboratory and the Financial Centre
So maybe some people thought what it seems everybody else was thinking (based on the comments) that these old buildings were “standing in the way of progress”
Have we forgotten the wooden building that used to be on Great George Street (Right next to Jolly’s Pharmacy) that was destroyed in pretty much the same way? We now see definite signs of progress where the old building used to be.
But in the end thank God that there were no fatalities. But somebody WAS hospitalized.
So just in case this was not an accident I hope that the perpetrators realize how dangerous this is.

Condolences to the famlies. It is overwhelming to see that houses still look like this especially in modern times. I hope the governments steps up because lately they have been gifting all cats, dogs and rats house. (This excludes people who lost their houses through natural disasters and the like). Gone are the days when people had to work hard, take a mortgage to build their dream home.

Any who, this is the time when your government should really show and prove

I hear what you are saying – But every advanced city have a historic district that preserves the old architecture or the facade of the old architecture. Roseau is being transformed and some of these houses should be preserved. Some of them have survived several hurricanes – we should not get rid of all these wooden structures and build concrete boxes.

      So true.
something should have been done and can still be done to preserve this part of our cultural heritage.
It’s most likely that a couple decades down the road our future generations of young Dominicans will only know the “concrete boxes” and only have pictures in books written by our local historians

My sympathies go out to the families who are now homeless due to the fire. On the other hand the Government of Dominica needs to do something about these homes. These homes are fire hazards. We should have inspectors to inspect homes once a year to make sure they are not fire hazards, especially in communities where these homes are so close together and made of highly flammable materials. Secondly all those old homes in Roseau should be replaced. They don’t look good especially in the Capital of the country and right next to the Government HQ. Finally, no recognizing we need to do better and accepting the status quo is the problem in the country.

Some of these families need help. One look at the building and it sends shivers through you. Why are so many people still living in these deplorable conditions? Some of the donated building materials should have gone to these indigent residents. Why do we neglect the poor? Come on man!
