DSC component of State House Project launched

PM Skerrit, with rendition of project in background, addresses launch this morning

The construction segment of the Dominica State College (DSC) component of the $27-million State House Project was officially launched this morning at a ceremony on the temporary grounds of the contractors for the project, Shanghai Construction Group, near the DSC’s Stockfarm Campus.

President of the DSC Dr Donald Peters outline that component of the project which has been proposed to include three buildings which will house a state-of the-art library and an auditorium.

“The scope of the construction is mammoth. It covers a total site area of 110,980 square meters, including a building area of nearly 28,000 meters. It consists of an Arts and Science Building, an Agricultural Training Center, a Library and Auditorium Building and renovation works for existing buildings,” he revealed.

Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China H.E Wang Zonglai

The new classrooms will also be ‘smart’ classrooms where technology can be used at all times and the entire college will be a WIFI zone, affording students internet access around  the clock.

Peters said, “One more exciting thing is that we’ll be a WIFI center because the college will grow; by 2015 we may have in excess of 2000 students and to provide computer access for each student might be a bit difficult. But with [mobile devices] if we create a WIFI Center for them work will be done quicker.”

Offering the feature address, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerritt relayed his delight at the project and reiterated his Government’s dedication to bringing the highest quality and level of education that we can afford to its citizens but charged the students of the DSC to grab hold of the advantages that they currently have in an effort to pull themselves and their parents to a better life.

“Words cannot express my excitement for the students of the DSC. This Government is committed to the education of its people. We are living in very trying economic circumstances and we could have used the money for many other things, but we believe that the money spent on the college will be well spent,” affirmed the Prime Minister.

He continued, “But I want to say to our students that you have more opportunities today than your parents ever had. And you need to take advantage of it. You cannot come here and waste your parents’ money. You cannot leave the countryside and when your parents think you are at school, you’re on the streets. You have to set your priorities straight, because you have to bring a certain level of pride to your parents.”

Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China H.E Wang Zonglai further conveyed the commitment of the PRC’s Government and expects that the project will expand the ability of the college for the furtherance of tertiary education in Dominica, with a view to enhancing the Human Resource capacity of the country.

The Ambassador stated, “Today, I come with honor and rejoice because on behalf of the Chinese Government, I am able to contribute to the DSC students and faculty some of what they need for the higher quality of tertiary education, as a token of friendship between the people of the PRC and the Commonwealth of Dominica.  Upon completion, we can expect a great improvement of the overall environment and the capabilities of the DSC. This is vital for taking Dominica’s economy and social development to the next level.”

According to Ambassador Zonglai, the contractors have a solid track record for the quality of their work all over the globe and always recruit local employees and use local supplies.

So they will be no computer lab in this growing technological world? the buildings for renovation does that include the Tourism department, automobile and woodwork?

      October 25, 2011

magee it never said no lab. it said no computers for 2000 students. i would think he meant there would not be 2000 computers. so instead of people having to wait for use of computer, they can if they have a laptop then use their laptop to do their work. Hope that clarifies.

Did I hear Dr Peters use his same speech of graduation? I hope it was a wrong insert DBS played since it would be pathetic for a head of our college not to be able to generate new thoughts.

Thats a very good move from the Gov and i give them the credits.

Let me add this.. Now we need the jobs so that children leaving this institution can be employed when they finish their education. Or else they will migrate and another country will benefit from the investment.

At fiffty-two years old I am a student at an American university. We hope one day, because the world is shrinking with technology, Dominica will have a liberal arts Bachelors program with a possible PhD completion foresight, within it’s infrastucture. These things require resources, both from within, and without. Notwithstanding, it is the sophisticated, non discriminating Dominicans, who will decide that fate moving forward. Lets us do it at the polls by using our entrenched human rights.

The DNO article states: ”The construction segment of the Dominica State College (DSC) component of the $27-million State House Project.”

This is, of course, incorrect. The college buildings are not part of the State House by any stretch of the imagination. Both projects are funded by a US$40 MILLION loan from China. The source of funding is the same.

Children go to school and learn well as the Mighty Sparrow would say. Embrace the opportunities my children.

Love to you all and don’t listen to those who say that no jobs after you go to school. These persons are only element of the Evil One who looks for a tiny hole in a well made suit. When you reach the bridge you will cross. Now study and study and do what is required of you. Do not waste your parents money or the state money (it is the state own and not any one man). See what is happenning around the world – recession and yet we are prospering. Thank God for his mercies upon Dominica. Let us be grateful and love one another and pray for our fellowmen.

Woy woy woy look at our new college at Stockie.

I challenge MOTS and all the others who are so negative … Let me hear what you have to say.

Even if is Chinese building, but it building though. Too much negative and talk all you doing.

Education, Education, Education for our children and grand children. Opportunities that we did not have when we were growing up. Who doh learn is who do have taste.

Thank you Father for what you are doing for us. Continue to sprad your wings over us and guide and protect our leaders.

speaking the truth is not being negative…. as a graduate of the DSC…. i have to say that this initiative is a great one… it almost silences the debate as to whether to spend such a sum on a building.. but knowing how we cherish education in dominica… then most will agree that having a state of the art college facility and a library is a good thing… but skerro must allocate funds for other sectors such as agriculture etc etc.. and he must stop being associated with questionable corrupt activities…. nothing negative just facts

Dominica is moving within the 21st century with it’s educational investments. The initiatives and incentives that have influenced foreign goverments to make those investments long term, is a signal that those investments is as a result of the stability of the country of Dominica, and the people must give themselves a hand for such attribute.
Dominicans have made a tremendous amount of investments in other countries as they explore educational oportunities abroad, we hope that other peoples from the region, would consider Dominica as an option in pursuing higher education attaining to the highest degree possible. Keep up the good work. :(

YOu seem to be seeing only in one direction.I am surprised that you are so myopic and empty in mind that you did not ask the PM any question about the number of locals employed on the project.

      • Buwo
        October 24, 2011

Who cares about how many locals employed on the project?? This institution is going to be Dominicas bascially forever. The generations of Dominicans that are going to be educated at this institution in the coming years far out beat any amount of locals working on it right now.

My children, my grandchildren, my great grandchildren, my great great grandchildren will have an opportunity to study there. . This is a far better investment that if local are presently employed on the project.

        Look at the big picture.

we in dominica treasure education and the new development is good however JOB CREATION is an essential component of nation building otherewise we are just preparing persons to develop other countries which has been happening over the last few years. yes individuals will benefit but what about the development of the state?? jobs are needed to increase government revenue and also impact productivity in the various economic sectors.
