Linton to skip “fete” for Baroness Scotland

Linton spoke to supporters on Thursday night in Lagoon

Leader of the Opposition and Political Leader of the United Workers Party, Lennox Linton, has made it clear that he will not be partaking in festivities planned during a four-day visit to Dominica by Commonwealth Secretary General-designate, Baroness Patricia Scotland.

He said at a public meeting of his party in Lagoon on Thursday night that he is skipping the events because the country is in a state where parliamentarians eat food that poisons them and Dominica is unable to pay workers after the passage of Tropical Storm Erika.

“So I received an invitation to go to the fete. I tore it up this afternoon,” he said.

There are reports that parliamentarians from both sides of the House of Assembly were affected by food that served when parliament met recently.

“So thank God for Melvina, Melvina will send a piece of fish for me,” he said.

The Opposition Leader also lamented that the country is currently undertaking the festivities at a time when it is struggling and is unable to pay those who work to rebuild after Erika.

“But, you know what is strange about that while we are spending all of these thousands for fete to celebrate the Baroness, the ordinary poor, struggling people of Roseau Central and Roseau South and Roseau North and in the Valley and in Salisbury and other parts of Dominica where they worked to clean up the country after Tropical Storm Erika, they cannot get paid,” he said.

He added, “They have done work, but they cannot get paid, the government doesn’t have the money to pay the heavy equipment operators who have been working hard trying to get us back to normal. But the government has thousands of dollars to spend on a fete for Baroness Scotland to tell us that Baroness Scotland is a Dominican even though she left here when she was two years.”

Linton called on all Dominicans to stand up for what is right.

“And there comes a time, when we have to stand for what is right, there comes a time when we have to forget what is in it for us and stand up for what is right,” Linton noted. “Because every time I hear Dominicans talk about Baroness Scotland will do this for us, she will do that for us, where was she all these years and what has she decided to do now that she has taken the position? She has decided to take a stand for the rights of Lesbians, Gays, Bisexual, of Transgender (LGBT) people. Not Dominica, not reparations, not CARICOM but LGBT agenda. That’s what she told us and that’s what she used the nomination of Dominica for. Let’s get real in this country.”

Baroness Scotland will be arriving in Dominica on Friday afternoon for the visit upon the invitation of Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit.

She will be attending a number of events while on the island including a children’s Christmas party at the State House, mass at the St. Gerard’s Chapel, a visit to the resettlement sites for Petite Savanne and Dubique, the renaming of a school in Vieille Case in her honor and a welcome reception and cultural soiree at the State House.

Once again Mr. Linton draws attention to Mr. Linton. Sadly though, the Opposition Leader can’t differenciate between something of international significance to local ‘talk show’ ‘local befe’ style campaigning. When will this man decide to grow a responsible opposition in Dominica and in so doing, a mature and engaging political sature od himself?

In true solidarity the PM should have been chipping behind Triple K band on 4th November like Lennox commending all those who took that day to clean and beautify the surrounding in continuation of the hard work. Lennox was there meeting greeting and congratulating,, while the pm on teleconference with the baroness.

    what a thing.

I read news cast upon newscast. The Leader of the Opposition is opined about his actions. He is also open about what he did much different from others who are afraid to step forward. The country was hit by a flood. The first thing was WCMF cancelled. Then a host of other activities sprung up like little well springs. The Govt said they had no money to support, The private businesses said the same thing. Now four months into the storm the Govt. seem to be using the donated money to fete instead of paying workers who worked their butt off to bring the country back. The bridges still need replacing, and better. The roads still need fixing. Come on people; if the lady wants a house party give her two bottles of kubuli and a little jing ping and let her go in her hotel room. But see to it that the people who worked get paid.

Labourites are quick to comment on this article as they feel it is an opportunity for them to cast a dark shadow on the character and personality of the Opposition Leader, Mr. Lennox Linton. They fail. however, to see the reality of tax-payers money being spent on a massive celebration for a woman who was appointed Disaster Relief Coordinator and has yet to give an account of a single effort made or single penny collected on Dominica’s behalf. They fail to see and understand that the Country is in a financial crisis, public workers, truckers and other Labourers are yet to paid, some of them for over three months and more. They believe that our dear and precious Prime Minister can be as rude and unprofessional as he likes in and out of Parliament but the opposition leader must remain as humble as a lamb. If I was Mr.Linton, speaking passionately on behalf of the suffering people during this X-mas season, I would say I used the invitation as toilet paper and flushed it.

After listening to Baroness Scotland speak at the renaming of the Vielle Case School in her honour; if I were a Dominican who did not support her candidacy as Commonwealth Secretary or say she was not Dominican like the rest of us, I would feel smaller than the smallest insect because none of those who oppose her can represent Dominica as she can so everyone of us can understand her.

What a treat it was to listen to her. Her parents took her at 2 1/2 out of Dominica but as we can all see, they did not take Dominica out of her. Well said Baroness. I feel really proud and happy I supported her.

Congratulations again PM. Congratulations Baroness Scotland, Congratulations Dominica.

I really feel sad for our opposition members and as a Dominican I feel very ashamed of them. What a sham for people who say they want to represent us. The worse is their supporters, those whom one would think would know better SMH,

Know our constitution if you want to represent us.

I’m hearing that there is a gathering scheduled for tomorrow, Monday 14th. I am also reading that there was something planned and executed yesterday, Saturday 12th for the children; something which the Baroness was expected to attend. So I am wondering, ‘were there two incidents separately?’ Two seperate ‘parties’ or fetes?

    December 13, 2015

I agree with Mr Linton that the spending of all this money to celebrate is unnecessary and ill advised. There should be a formal much less grand celebration for the Baroness.

With regards to what the Baroness says are some of her priorities, Mr Linton is very childish and inexperience. There are social issues that affect productive and heavy austrizing lesbian etc is one of them.

Mr Linton is very inexperience with regards to international affairs. Tha Baroness cannot talk about singling out the Caribbean to help. She represents the Commonwealth and must be careful about how she approaches the job. I bet you if it was another national saying how they would help their country, Mr Linton would be the first to talk of corruption and I would agree with him.

Allow the lady to get on the job, presents her strategy, we can form a better judgement. Discrimination and corruption have destroyed many countries. Mr Linton remains quiet on the corruption matter because he is so angry.

Linton with due respect to you and UWP, I think it was a mistake to have you lead the party! when I heard of your appointment I told it good because of your strength, caliber, and education………….. now you have me thinking different of you as a leader, you are in a time where you can be a good watch dog for the people of Dominica but the level you are coming across the people is belittling and you need to take note of that, focus on educating the people, motivate the people, and remember with educated people they cam move mountains. (WE HAVE TO MOVE BEYOND THE MIND-SET OF THE POWERLESS) -Audrey Edwards
Linton have you ever stopped to wonder what the people of Dominica do not concern themselves with all the problems in the country? They seem totally willing to believe that somehow, some way, everything will be find, and somehow for them it is…………. Linton is time you sit back and lead by example because and make Mr. James feel like he made the right decision………..

    December 12, 2015

It is shocking to read what the leader of the opposition stated, that he received an invitation and tore it up. The reasons he cited are futile and out of place.
Your comments are unfair. The PM has done much to take care of those who were affected by TS Erika. I am certain they are not in need of basic necessities.
Linton, this is inconsiderate, disrespectful, rude and self-centered of you. You cannot deceive sensible people. This is not the primary reason you decided not to attend and tore up the invitation.
It should be clear to those who can think and read for themselves and between the lines. You were not pleased that the PM nominated her. You wrote requesting that he withdrew his nomination and join other West Indian governments to support Sanders. You were disappointed that she was elected. You did not offer her congratulations.
Your attitude is one of hatred and enmity. Surely, this should not be the attitude of the leader of the opposition.

  16. Tell the Facts
    December 12, 2015

The Baroness was in T & T, not too far away from D/ca. It is understandably that the PM extended an invitation to her and she accepted. You rejected the PM’s invitation and scorned her. That was not nice of you.
You did not think of the people you represent but thought solely of yourself and your ill- feelings which have absolutely no bearing on the reason you stated.
It was poor of you to react in this unbecoming manner. What a shame. You have projected your true color.
It is obvious you are not interested in contributing to cooperation, unity and peace. Where you are concerned, there is no compromise. It was not necessary to broadcast what you did. Be aware that not everyone will condone your action.
A genuine Christian, one who is striving for godly perfection would not act in such a manner. It is nothing to be proud of and to brag about. This will remain with you for the rest of your life. Keep in mind, what goes around comes around and two-fold.

Did the Leader of the Opposition tear up the invitation because he feared for his life? That he could suffer from food poisoning? If that is the case, then this is a serious matter. However, if the Leader tore up the invitation as a sign of protest, then my suggestion to him is to put aside petty politics, and look at the bigger picture.
If the Senator from St. Joseph, did not receive an invitation, then the Leader could have given her his invitation, and hopefully she would have attended the event.
Regardless of our political affiliation, there are times when we must do things that serve the greater good. Here is another example of a woman who has excelled and now carries the responsibility for so many countries. Every little girl in Dominica can now view the Baroness as a role model – that women can reach top level positions if they put their minds to it. At a time when domestic violence is rampant in our country, to hear her speak out so strongly against it gives hope to all…

I am looking at the list of events in this article and I fail to see a “fete.”

Let us be respectful and realize that the Baroness title and AG in the UK are tremendous accomplishments for a black woman of Caribbean heritage. The UK is not exactly the bastion of racial and cultural utopia. Let us put all this political garbage aside. There is a time and place for that. Now is time to show some respect.

I am not enthralled by her agenda and we should take the time to share the real problems of the Caribbean Commonwealth but now is not the time for useless posturing.

In total agreement with Mr Linton. Why spend monies needed to get the country back on its feet, on a ‘fete’? More to the point why any ‘fete’. Baroness Scotland does not reside in Dominica and will leave it the same way she finds it.

I have read this news item and from what I’ve extracted from it , it would seem that The Opposition Leader is upset , bitter and resentful . I am a fervent supporter of the United Workers Party because of its policies and vision however I have never supported Mr Linton as leader . He may be eloquent and may have a little charisma however he lacks intelligence . Intelligence is different from mere academics . It is the backbone of wisdom . It is thinking strategically. I believe that he is too hotty , temperamental , agitated and segregated. He truly doesn’t blend it . Recently , I attended the opening ceremony of the Dominican Local Product Store which is located opposite symzees place in Roseau and Mr Linton attended and he just seemed isolated . Sitting with a pair of dark sunglasses and arms folded , no interaction with anyone then suddenly filters out of the ceremony . I was keenly observing his demeanour . Joshua Francis is the true competition for Skerritt . He is my future…

“So I received an invitation to go to the fete. I tore it up this afternoon,” he said–News Article

I like the way DNO left that line by itself–it speaks very loud pertaining the mentality of Lennox Linton; a man who wants to be the Prime Minister of my Dominica–say what!

Linton your declaration communicated what people with the right state of mind and understanding already know about you; it is that you have no class of a human being; no social etiquette; no respect for the ideas of others–regardless of who they are. If were you no one would know what I did with that invitation–how deplorable, especially meaning shameful of you!

Through that declaration, you exposed your grudging and hateful heart; your jealousy, envy, and self-centeredness; your desire to want things done your way–Lennox Linton, you are in the wrong world, you see!

They engage in these activities as a way to blind and stupify the people as to their needs and condition. It does not surprise me that there are those among the populace who would resort to condemning Mr. Linton for his stance, because they have been so badly euthanized by the activities of this admin that they are oblivious to their condition and of those to are trying to wake them up from their stupor and malaise. The vast majority of Dominicans, both at home and abroad seem to have no clue as to where their best interest lies, what their true values are, nor what they want in life as it pertains to personal development or nation building. Dominicans by large seem not to give thought or consideration to suggestions but exhibit that herd mentality. Had many of my compatriots lived during the era of ‘the kings of the east’, when king Nebuchadnazzer rashly demanded that all men and all nationalities in his domain fall down and worship his “golden image” (Dan.3: 5,6), they would all have slavishly done so, no questions asked. Honorable Linton is doing the most ”honorable” thing by rejecting outright, and refusing tacit participation in an elaborate scheme designed by the “king” to further blind the Dominican populace of their true condition. There is a national crisis prevailing in Dominica: social instability, job insecurity, inadequate, shoddy and substandard healthcare, to name a few.

Classic case of the blind loving to be led by the blind, and the results are evident. Dominica has been and continues to be on a downward spiral, and the masses love it. Mr Linton dares to stand against the tide of evil and malaise in the country and he is being villified and demonized by the very people he is trying to educate and sensitize to their lamentable condition. Stand up Mr. Linton; they may not see what you are doing now, but history is squarely on your side. It was Jesus Himself who declared that “a prophet is not without honor except in his own country and by his own people”. By the time Dominicans wake up to reality and what really matters in these hard economic times, there will be no Dominica left, but a land of super wealthy politicians who have exploited the people for their own advancement. Keep up your efforts Mr. Linton. You will prevail. Jeremiah did!. Jesus did! And so will you!!!

Had they been around when king Nebuchadnazzer demanded that all men, and all nationalities bow down to his golden image (Dan. 3: v 5,6), they would all have hypnotically fallen down and worship at the foot of this idol, unlike Daniel and his three friends who stood against the kings mad demand. I thank God for men like the Honorable Linton who has the perception to be both courageous, visionary,, and discriminating, so that he knows when he needs to stand and not bow to every mad edict of the forces who care little or nothing for God and country. any one who dares to criticize the minister is not aware of the reality of conditions in Dominica, nor the world at large.

Lennox, that is a good move, nobody in Dominica should recognize that woman, that\’s Skerrit pet. Nobody should attend to that crap. Here is a woman who may have never attend kindergarten in Dominica, she knows more about England, and perhaps Antigua to where both her parent belongs.

Why force her on a nation who cares nothing about her?

If Skerrit cared anything about Dominica and our people he could have found someone who was born; raised, and educated in Dominica, or at some university at government expense or their own expense to recommended for that position wether they were confirm in the position or not.

He is promoting this waste of time bit of specimen simple because he believes his association with her will boost his pathetic ego; and remove some of his low self esteem which has plagued him all of his life! Holding on to her dress tail will not make Skerrit the man he wish to be educationally, nor morally!

    • December 15, 2015

@Francisco Etienne-Dods Telemaque December 11, 2015 “Why force her on a nation who cares nothing about her?”

There you go again, pretending to know it all, but still reading with your eyes closed, not knowing that your book is upside down and back to front.

PM Skerrit nominated Baroness Scotland for the role which she won. The decision was made by the majority of Leaders from the Commonwealth countries–PM Skerrit did not force her into anything–but just like any other human being, he has to right to celebrate by inviting his people to share that celebration with him–you need to shut up when you do not understand the circumstance; which you not, more that too many times

But then again, who will not expect you to stand with Lennox Linton; you have claimed that he is your cousin, that means that you are just as bad as him–or even worse.

I the past he opposed to your ideas, as rude as he opposes others; perhaps he still doesn’t care a “rats poom” about you

I don’t normally or never support the Leader of the Opposition but this time I am in full support. Why indeed should he be anywhere where the Dominican born Commonwealth Secretary is at when he so openly and bitterly opposed her nomination and election and instead put his support towards a non-Dominican? Man good for you! why go there and embarrass yourself again?

Most Dominicans feel very proud that a fellow Dominican has been elected to that prestigious post. Welcome Home Baroness Scotland most of us are very proud of you. Those who are not are nothing more than plain jealousy.

Would we have expected the Opposition Leader at the Funeral of the Late President Liverpool after all the names he called him? Of course not. Who believe this man is staying away to prove a point, ridiculous. The man is staying away because he really has no choice. There is egg on his face. And he cannot say how ashamed he is. December 13, 2015

We know that Father Cuffy is D/can. He resides in D/ca and performs the Lord’s work as a Christian Priest. I do not know why you mentioned his name in this.
Those who were born in D/ca have a D/can birth certificate for life whether they reside in D/ca or were at whatever age. They can return any time. There should be no argument about that. No one and nothing can erase that. It is ignorant to argue about it.
Linton, as leader of the opposition received an invitation. The appreciative and respectful thing to do was to attend the function(s).
As a Christian Priest I do not expect Father Cuffy to object to it. I would be very disappointed if he did. He also knows what is contained in Holy Scripture as The Church (he) teaches.
Those of you who are Christians and condoned Linton’s attitude, you have greatly erred. Most of all you have highly offended God.. Linton and yourselves should know God’s teaching about welcoming others and especially your own.

      • December 15, 2015

        @Face the Facts December 13, 2015

Based on Linton’s previous attitude towards the nomination of Baroness Scotland from PM Skerit I would not expect him to attend any celebration pertaining to her.

However his announcement–to tearing up the invitation–to the public audience confirms the fact that he has no Essence in Love, of the mind, which should be in the minds of all Christians. Instead of feeling ashamed; which should be the rebuke by his conscience from God, by His Holy Spirit –he is proud about what he did; that would mean that his conscience is dead to the ways of Love; and so his mind is carnal–an enemy of God and the Life of Love.

Those people who are supporting the attitude and conduct of Lennox Linton do not know what they are calling for from God. Tropical Storm Erika was not just a bad storm; Dominica need to take heed of the evil minded persuaders whom they associate with.

Linton tearing up the invitation is not professionalism because if you were not invited you would have created a big show out of it too. How can they please you? Is this the mentality you will have if voted PM in the future? Is this the behavior you teach your children and the youths of Dominica? So because other leaders are unprofessional is he to display the same behavior?

How can Linton ever win the respect of the significant outside world; but that he needs to do if he is ever going to become Prime Minister of Dominica–which of course God forbids! There is no doubt about this in my mind.

Little boys are those who are part of a cabinet where they can’t challenge the pm
Little boys are those who refuse to admit their incompetence
Little boys are those who have been in power for over 14 years and have Dominica in reverse gear
Little boys are those who hire experts to raise their PR efforts, whereas many Dominicans could do the same or even better
So take that Lil boy talk elsewhere to…

Totally agree with Mr Linton. .. Dominica is not in any position to host any huge event taking a page from the cancellation of the entire independent season. Please nothing is wrong with the Baroness ” visit to Dominica but surely not at this time.
This Pm Skerritt loves to much show and stuff like that to make Dominicans cling to him like a god.
One also would like to think what point is he trying to make to the other Caribbean leaders?
The Barroness could come anytime to Dominica….. nothing wrong with that move.. but when the people are crying for their money, when Christmas begin to look really tough for Dominicans.. Mr Skerritt must will and come again. ..
Perhaps some international report or reporters should travel to Dominica and expose the lack of progress after the storm.
Roosevelt and his labour failed government want to avoid the issue…
No problem with Baroness but this is an out of timing move…..
If you all having fete let the poor fete too… after all man!

    • December 11, 2015

Storm, what huge event?. There are always suffering people in Dominica while others are having a good time, ERICA is not the cause, that’s just how it is. Over 50 million people in the US live in poverty yet the President, with the compliments of the taxpayers live a life of luxury. The UWP is been lead …. who is always blue vex, it seems that anger is his middle name. The leader is still vex about Scotland getting elected so he tears up the invitation and utters rubbish. Well the family of this unfortunate invitation should now sue that Skeritt administration for causing the death of their loved one.

So why did we cancel WCMF again? Since people are always suffering? I recall something about kubulis in hand. I guess none will be available at this event?

The Dominicans Linton and those who support him in this should be in the position of some poor Canadians and also US ones who do not have a roof over their heads and who sleep on the streets. No exception in other progressive countries.
Salvation Army and other non-profit organizations give some a bed to sleep for the night. At daybreak, they must get up at a certain time of the morning and go out on the streets, be it in the hot or cold weather. They depend on those organizations to provide daily meals for them.
The DA government helped Dominicans much more than those I mentioned who reside in these countries, if especially a disaster struck here
These Dominicans that Linton speak of should know how fortunate they are in Dominica even after TS Ericka struck, those who receive assistance and eventually a place to reside with more to come.

        @Anon December 11, 2015

Not only anger, there is also hatred, envy, jealousy–all of which is provoked by that man’s sense of failure–that man cannot be in the spotlight, as leader of our Dominica and her people; there is just no way this can happen, for God forbid this!

As a Prime Minister, he would have to have ties with “International Leaders” what man of dignity in the outside world would respect the mentality of Lennox Linton?

After all! Respect is earned, not granted; how can the leader of the “Opposing Government” speak the words that Lennox speaks, knowing that it will be broadcasted over the internet?

“So I received an invitation to go to the fete. I tore it up this afternoon,” he said” How deplorable! This is such a shameful thing to speak to the public ear!

I really want to see how those hypocrites we have in Dominica will react to this one because we know very well that it is not a fete because she is a Dominican, but the celebration of a woman whose main agenda is to fight for gay right. That’s what those Christians who would otherwise criticize Gays and lesbians will be welcoming in their fete. Don’t welcome one of their key advocates today and tomorrow use the bible to talk about Sodom and Gomorrah.

Comprehend, those who hold public office are obligated to fight for the rights of everyone, whether we like it or not. Those governments of those countries instituted it. Who knows? She may not like this type of agenda but she has to show face, if not pretend. Be broadminded and give her the benefit of the doubt. Think beyond.

Why am I uncomfortable with this position? I hear the cries and feel the pain of the people but can’t help but feel this is not the right position for the opposition leader. Everything is not worthy of a full political assault and wanton self righteousness.
Chill out! Make the point (and others) without the repeated drama. A little decorum and good measure will go along way towards your ultimate goal.

For once we have something consistent standing up to Skerrit and the corrupt government. If Baroness Scotland had any decency for poor people and an ailing country , she will fly pass by Dominica and head back to UK asap. Other than this position, she would not be visiting Dominica for this party

Very good point. It just not in the best interest of the opposition to criticize the appointment of the Baroness. It just not smart politics. Linton should voice his concern of the “lavish “spending behind the visit.

That’s what I like about Linton. He is not a typical politician
that will attend or boycott an event based on political advantage or disadvantage. He is a man of character and conviction, and that’s what makes him an ideal leader.

As far as I am concern this fete of Skerrit is only to see if he can get the support of Gays and lesbians, since fighting for their rights is on the top of her agenda. In fact I believe Skerrit should wait until the gay ship arrives here to host that fete.

I do hope I will not see any pastor, evangelist, prophet, or any of those who were eager to protest against the gay ship, present in the gay right fete. Let’s call It by its rightful name because that’s what she said is on her front burner when she picks up her new job

I can see why you thing that Linton is a man of Character and an ideal leader; perhaps you also think that the rubbish you wrote above is from a mind of character as well, eh!

It is unfortunate though, that you have 44 idiots backing you up, with that senseless comment–may God have mercy on our Dominica, for they do not know what they say and do.

Did the invitation say “You are invited to a Fete?” what were the words on the invitation? Can the Leader of the Opposition show us what were the exact words on the invitation he received? or is he again telling us that the words he used recently in parliament to describe the Prime Minister suits him better?

Come to think of it, DNO I cannot recall seeing where you mentioned this explicit un-parliamentary exchange in parliament anywhere in your reporting. I didn’t say you did not, I said, I cannot recall seeing it and if you did can you point me to the article where you reported this exchange? I would like to read it or hear an audio of it on DNO, I think that was news worth reporting.

Of course, I am by no means telling DNO how to operate its message board just looking for a balance in what DNO believes is the public right to know or whether they were shocked by the rest of us by the outburst in the Honourable House. Did the invitation say “Fete?”

Good move on your part. Them man maybe all trying to poison you. This Labor administration cannot get their priorities right. If you put Skeritt’s brain on a bird, it would fly backwards. He has the intelligence of a Moroccan house fly. Mister so confused that he almost sell his television to pay his Marpin bill. This is what happens when you put a shopkeeper to run a country. His hands are tied. No leadership skills whatsoever. Can’t even decode simple ABC stuff. The brilliant plans and ideas Rosie Douglas had envisioned for this country sadly died along with him, and unfortunately headless chickens like Skeritt cannot replicate them. You simply cannot put a boy in a man’s shoes. If Rosie Douglas was alive today he would not have been pleased with the dire state that Skeritt has brought Dominica to; period. He thinks he owns Dominica. I hope he and his wife on good terms because the day he divorces her it looking like he would have to give her half of the country.

The venom that you are spewing will not hurt Skeritt. When you point a finger at him, take a look and see how many are pointing right back at you.
